by Lisa Waskin 21 Aug '15

21 Aug '15

Happy Friday Yoopers, After seeing Megan's post from Dickinson, I decided to see what other libraries are hosting Ms. Irish so that I could put together a full listing of her time up here in Sept/Oct. so that we could all share it with our patrons. So please, if you are hosting her and the Thousand Letters Home program this fall, please let me know your Library Name, location, time and date of program and contact person. I will put together a full list for us to add to our flyers so that you can offer your patrons options if that can't make it to your library's program, maybe there's one close by on another date that they can, and maybe my patron can make it to yours, and so on. So far I have: Monday, September 21st at the Curtis Library Tuesday, September 22nd at the Bayliss Library in SSM Thursday, September 24th at the Dickinson Library October 1st at the Engadine Library Thanks a bunch in advance, Lisa Lisa Poignant Waskin Director Superior District Library 541 Library Drive Sault Sainte Marie, MI 49783 906.632.9331 v 906.635.0210 f lisaw(a)uproc.lib.mi.us http://joomla.uproc.lib.mi.us/SDL/

The Genesee District Library is looking for input on exterior road signs. Specifically, libraries who have had experience working with a vendor in the past five or six years. We are hoping to hear pros and cons of electronic signage and the same for traditional type signage. Replies with sign vendor recommendations are also welcome. We will be working within the constraints of municipal ordinances. Please reply off list directly to dconklin(a)thegdl.org<mailto:dconklin@thegdl.org>. MeL Minute - Tell Us Your MeL Story
by Borrelli, Eunice (MDE) 20 Aug '15

20 Aug '15

Hello all, In case you've been wondering (and missing it), we moved the link for libraries and patrons to tell us MeL stories, from the left column on the MeL homepage<http://mel.org/> to the Contact MeL<http://mel.org/Contact> link under Resources at the bottom of the homepage, http://mel.org/Contact. Having first-hand information about how MeL resources are used and shown to be helpful to students, individuals, businesses, and organizations provides us with the information we need to ensure continued funding and interest by stakeholders. Have a heartwarming tale of MeL success or an innovative application of a particular resource? Please share - we'd love to hear about it. Training opportunity next week: All Michigan library staff are invited to join MCLS/LM on August 26, at 9:30 am for a free ½ hour webinar on utilizing MeL legal resources. Learn from your colleagues who regularly utilize MeL legal resources to provide their patrons with the information they need. We will hear from both the public library and special/academic legal library perspectives. Read more and register at: http://mcls.org/training-events/training-events-list/training-event/?ref_cI… MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for next week's MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org> or visit mel.org<http://mel.org/>. We encourage you to share MeL Minutes with your public service colleagues. Eunice Eunice C. Borrelli Michigan eLibrary Internet Librarian, Library of Michigan/Michigan Dept. of Education 702 W. Staff Training Topics
by Stanczak, Cindy 20 Aug '15

20 Aug '15

Hello all! I apologize for any cross-posting. I'm hoping you can share what you feel are the best staff training topics (and trainers) you've used at your library. We've only got one staff day each year (something I'm hoping to chance down the road), and I've learned that too many serious topics, as important as they are, drag down the crowd. But leaving the library to do something that's not even remotely applicable seems to be a waste of the precious little time we have together as an entire staff. Topics, trainers, contacts, "hey, I heard XX Library did this once...," fun or serious, I welcome them all. Thank you! Are you considering fiber provisioning with E-Rate dollars?
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 20 Aug '15

20 Aug '15

The Library of Michigan is reaching out to libraries who are considering taking advantage of the changes to fiber funding for last-mile provisioning that became possible with the E-Rate modernization orders. To obtain state matching dollars that can be used to leverage federal funds we will need to go to the legislature with the Department of Education with a special funding request. In order to prepare for this we need to know how many libraries are considering applying and where you are in the process. If this possibility is on your radar, please take this very short survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WNPCLRS The questions include your contact information, a brief description of your fiber build need (e.g. "I need 30 feet of dark fiber to one of my branches"), whether you are partnering with a local school district, and roughly where you are in the process (e.g. "We are shovel-ready and will be applying for E-Rate dollars in 2016;" "We're 2-3 years out" etc.). Those that respond to the survey and provide contact information will receive a follow-up call from me where we can discuss your situation in more detail. This is where we're starting to line up the matching dollars so please take a moment to fill out this survey if you'll be taking advantage of the new rules surrounding funding for last mile provisioning with E-Rate dollars. If you are interested in more information about the new rules, please see this E-Rate Fiber Build Workshop recording<https://www.fcc.gov/events/e-rate-fiber-build-workshop> held by the FCC in May.
