Giveaway AV Shelf Dividers
by Jake Rynicki 05 Jun '25

05 Jun '25

Hey guys, we have 4 packs of 50 dividers (roughly 200). These are made for AV shelving. These are in the "sand" color. We got new shelves to complete our adult renovation however, we do not need all of these dividers . We only use one divider per shelf and if we decided to add several more we still have way too many. We want to know if any library would like. Size is on the side of the box. Just let me know and I can send out in rides. Thanks! Program recommendation - Qigong and sound bath by Janet Joiner
by Kelly Rembert 05 Jun '25

05 Jun '25

Hi, Last night we did 2 back to back programs presented by Janet Joiner. 5:30 - 6:30 we did a Qigong program - Enhance overall health and wellness by participating in qigong and a sound bath. Qigong is slow fluid physical movements originally practiced by ancient, indigenous peoples of China as traditional medicine. 6:30 - 7:30 we had a sound bath - A sound bath features a variety of relaxing sounds designed to reduce stress while enhancing wellbeing and a sense of calm. Feel free to bring a yoga mat or blanket to lay on. They were presented by Janet Joiner (248-291-7975 or janet_joiner(a)yahoo.com) and I was highly impressed with her. She had both programs prepared with music soundtracks that timed it perfectly. She encouraged everyone to move at their own pace and ability and showed a few different ways you could do something. We had over 30 people at both programs and about half stayed for both programs and half attended just one of the programs. She was professional to work with and brought all of the equipment for the sound bath along with 15 yoga mats to lend out to those that didn't have their own and sleep masks for all participants. Participants told me how much they enjoyed it and that they want to bring her back and do it again. She is based in Southfield but wants to travel to other libraries. Thanks, Kelly Kelly Ireland Rembert Outreach Librarian Southfield Public Library 26300 Evergreen Rd. Wood Puzzle - How to transfer image
by Lorry Traver 05 Jun '25

05 Jun '25

Hi all, I would love a little crafting help. Has anyone used these puzzles before? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07R5159TR?ref=fed_asin_title If so, what was the best method you found to transfer a printed image to the puzzle? I have tried mod podge on top of the paper and let it dry, but the ink did not stick to the puzzle. I have also tried printing to shiny wax paper type paper, and that did not work either. If you have any helpful suggestions, I would love some help. Thank you! -- *"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. MeL Minute: Celebrating National Zoo and Aquarium Month
by Ann Kaskinen 05 Jun '25

05 Jun '25

[cid:image002.png@01DBD5F1.CD695AB0]The U.S. National Zoo and Aquarium Month is celebrated annually in June to recognize the role that zoos and aquariums play in the conservation and research of animal and fish species. We are encouraged to visit these locations to learn more about animals and marine life, and to support the work that they do to protect our planet's biodiversity. Zoos and aquariums are actively involved in breeding programs for endangered species and habitat restoration projects, as well as educational opportunities to learn about the importance of conservation. The eResources<https://mel.org/az.php> in the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL) can help inform us about the history that surrounds these programs and the work that continues to happen every day. Endangered Species Act The Britannica School<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=eb> entry, Endangered Species Act<https://school.eb.com/levels/high/article/Endangered-Species-Act/474134>, a federal law passed in 1973, outlines the obligation of federal and state governments to protect all species threatened with extinction that fall within the borders of the United States and its territories. Additionally, in the Related section, learners can link to even more facts<https://www.livescience.com/54707-endangered-species-act.html> about the Act. In 2023, Environmental Forum, a publication in Science Reference Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, printed the article, The Endangered Species Act at 50: Making the Statute More Effective<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=0ca16837-7bd6-37d0-9f01-a…>. In it, environmentalists, lawyers, professors, and other interested parties revisited the Act and addressed concerns such as funding, clarification of conservation goals, and meeting new challenges. Change Agents One example of conservation happening close to home is highlighted in a recent article<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=84219690-cefc-3ed7-92b7-1…> in Michigan Blue from MasterFILE Complete<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>. It explains the efforts of Detroit’s Belle Isle Aquarium and Belle Isle Conservancy to improve the 120-year-old aquarium for better habitat and house new species, including 3 endangered axolotls. Interestingly, aquariums have existed fewer than 200 years. In The Lady and the Octopus: How Jeanne Villepreux-Power Invented Aquariums and Revolutionized Marine Biology<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=67ddbea6-8269-33e6-b683-f…> from the eBook High School Collection<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>, we learn that the first known aquarium was created to study the argonaut (octopus) in1833 by a woman who had an intense curiosity of marine life. Library Aquariums If you’re housing a small tank in your school or public library, there are some great programming ideas around sustainability, science, and crafts shared in the article, Under the Sea: The Joy and Responsibility of Library Aquariums<https://research.ebsco.com/linkprocessor/plink?id=d608ea01-cbb3-34ab-98ea-d…>, from School Library Journal in Education Source<https://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=e…>. For detailed articles on many of the species that appear on the current endangered list, reference the Encyclopedia of Endangered Species<https://research.ebsco.com/c/sbdrh4/search/results?q=encyclopedia%20of%20en…> in Science Reference Source.
