Desk Staff - working at multiple service points
by Andrea Ingmire 10 Jun '25

10 Jun '25

Greetings hive mind - If you work in a library system that has a staffing structure where 'desk staff' work in multiple departments or at multiple service point types, I'm very interested in learning more about how that works for you. I am NOT looking for staffing structures with multiple branches where staff are scheduled to perform the same tasks but at different branches. Since Covid we've been experiencing quite a lot of turnover. At this moment in time we have a very green staff. I'm hearing from my department managers that many are feeling very overwhelmed by the training involved in onboarding new staff. It has made me curious about rethinking onboarding processes and/or considering new options for staffing - especially at service desks. Curious about what other staffing models are out there in library land, and how they are (or are not) working in your organization. We're a Class 5 library with one main library of significant size. As always, many thanks. Looking for a sign to inform patrons about the library's service animal policy
by John MacLellan 10 Jun '25

10 Jun '25

Hello all, The Vicksburg District Library has had some issues come up with patrons who bring in pets or animals they claim are service animals but are badly behaved. We are thinking of putting up a sign to inform people that we allow well-behaved service animals but not pets or emotional support animals. Do you have a sign that you put up in your library that is comprehensive and legal? National Walking Month (May) Presentation - El Camino de Santiago
by Lexi Smith 10 Jun '25

10 Jun '25

Good morning, I wanted to reach out and spread the word of our extremely popular program we had in May, "Talk the Walk: El Camino de Santiago", presented by David Larwa. I wanted to celebrate National Walking Month in a fun way, and David Larwa happened to contact us a few months before, and I am super glad I reached out! David has made the Camino pilgrimage *multiple* times. I can't recall the amount, but he knows his stuff. He has walked in many different countries as well, teaches origami, is a co-founder of the Southeast Michigan chapter of the American Pilgrims on the Camino <https://americanpilgrims.org/iwpmap_directory/southeast-michigan/>, and was just the most engaged and informative speaker I've seen in a long time. He was extremely passionate and had a really thorough presentation put together about the El Camino de Santiago, both its context / purpose as well as the pilgrimage itself. Patrons were completely engaged, we had a full house and then some, and we went about ten minutes over the allotted time and every single patron stayed. He brought his walking materials he travels with, TONS of books on the subject of walking as well as the Camino, and brought a lot of energy. Please consider reaching out to David to get a better sense of who he is and what he has done, as I can't even begin to continue elaborating on his qualifications and adventures. He was a pleasure to have, and he is interested in working with other libraries in Michigan! David Larwa: - davidlarwa(a)gmail.com - 810 923-9191 Thank you and have a great Tuesday, Alexis Smith Emerging Technologies Librarian Grosse Pointe Public Library 313-640-4775 ext 1215
