Five New Destinations Join MAP!!!

All, I've been pretty quiet on the MAP front recently, on account I've been on vacation. Just as vacation can't last forever, neither can silence when it comes to the Michigan Activity Pass program. So, let's celebrate the breaking of the MAP noise fast! First, I am pleased to report that we have garnered nearly 300,000 hits on the MAP website since we went live over Memorial Day weekend. That number represents a higher total than we had for the entire twelve month period from May, 2014 through May, 2015! Usage of the MAP program has slowed with the start of school, as we knew it would. But keep in mind that nearly all of the DNR sites are open year round (advise patrons to call ahead to verify accessibility once the white stuff starts to fly, please), as are many of the indoor venues. Parents are still looking for things to do with their kids on the weekends, and retirees are game any day of the week. So keep up the promotion of MAP!!! Speaking of your patrons, how would you like to have five brand new MAP destinations to present to them? Okay! We say "thank you for partnering with us" to the five most accessible and largest nature preserves of the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy http://www.chippewawatershedconservancy.org/ in Mt. Pleasant. We will work to get all of the information entered for Hall's Lake Natural Area, Sylvan Solace, Audubon Woods, Peterson Natural Area and Quigley Creek into the MAP database asap, in order that your patrons might partake of the beautiful Fall color show these areas will soon display. We've got some other potential MAP irons simmering over the fire. I'm not in a position yet to say what those are, but I can tell you that if they pan out you will be very pleased. Finally, the Michigan Library Association conference will take place at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. Tom Daldin and Jim Edelman of Under the Radar: Michigan will be the luncheon keynote speakers on Thursday, October 29. Don't forget that Tom and Jim will also help us draw the names of four lucky libraries at the conference that will win a free program by the two UTR guys. Author Eliot Schrefer will be presenting at MAME's Annual Conference in Bay City this year. The annual Author Breakfast event begins with a full breakfast, immediately followed by Eliot's presentation, "Expanding Our Empathy Through Children's Literature." Eliot's fifth novel, Endangered, was a finalist for the National Book Award in Young People's Literature. REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS 1. Master's Degree in Library Science and a Credentialed member of MLA Academy of Health Information Professionals is required. 2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills are required. 3. Experience planning, developing and monitoring budgets and operational plans is required. 4. Familiarity with health resources in print and electronic format. 5. Experience with collection development, cataloging, classification and document delivery systems. 6. "The House Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions are preparing to reach an agreement on the reauthorization of Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The provisions included in ESEA through the Every Child Achieves Act would support effective school library programs and we need your help to ensure that they are included. ESEA reauthorization replaces No Child Left Behind and it's really now or never (or a very long time) to have strong school libraries included. Six Mile Rd., Redford MI 48240 www.redfordlibrary.org POSITION: SUNDAY LIBRARIAN REPORTS TO: Head of Adult Services QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited university Enthusiasm and commitment to public service excellence Demonstrated knowledge of computers, including Internet resources Excellent written and verbal communication skills Public library experience preferred Knowledge of print and electronic reference tools Self-motivated and dependable Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, supervisors and the public Ability to view and utilize library computer records Ability to listen and interact with all library patrons Ability to stand for extended periods of time as well as climb, stoop, bend, reach, lift, push and/or pull at least 20 pounds TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Deliver reference and reader’s advisory services in person, over the phone, and via online chat to library patrons of all ages Assist patrons with computers, wi-fi, photocopiers and other equipment Explain library policies and serve as the Librarian in charge Other duties as assigned HOURS: Sundays, 11:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (2-4 per month). Some substitute hours may be available other days/times. The Library is open on Sundays during the school year only.
