Registration for the 2015-16 Great Michigan Read is now open. The Michigan Humanities Council invites you to join the statewide discussion of Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. Station Eleven is set in a world turned upside down, but is ultimately an exploration of people surviving and remaking their lives by preserving the qualities that make us human: culture, art, and the humanities. The Great Michigan Read will run from August 2015 through May of 2016 with Emily St. John Mandel making four separate tours throughout Michigan. As always, libraries, schools, and nonprofits are eligible for free reader's guides, teacher's guides, bookmarks, promotional materials, and up to 30 copies of Station Eleven. Hello, Librarians providing business information at university, college or community college libraries in the state of Michigan are cordially invited to attend the annual Michigan Academic Business Librarian meeting at Grand Valley State University's Seidman College of Business on Friday, July 24, 2015. The Seidman College of Business is located on GVSU's Pew Campus in downtown Grand Rapids. A more detailed agenda, parking passes, and driving directions will be sent to attendees the week prior to the event. Please consider facilitating a discussion or presentation pertinent to business librarianship by completing this short form: http://goo.gl/forms/zSzzC0MAZh. Possible discussion topics may include collection development, engaging with faculty, embedding yourself in the classroom, business information literacy, open education resources, and successful collaborations. We recently a huge book donation. After sorting we have three collections to offer to anyone interested. Aprox. 60 books in German. We believe mostly non-fiction. Good condition of varying ages. Alzheimer suggestions

Hi everyone, these are the responses received from my request for materials for patrons with Alzheimer's. Thank you to all who responded. 1) Veterinary books by James Herriot. Each chapter is the equivalent of a short story. They are available on MeL in Large Print. 2) Short story collections worked for a while - mostly in the genres he liked before. After it progressed, trivia books/factoid books/bathroom reading books seemed to work really well - the shorter, punchier text was easy to comprehend and would often trigger other memories. Your patron might also like some of the juvenile/YA science books - they tend to have large, colorful illustrations, simplified text, and be relatively short on each topic. 3) Collections by Dave Barry, Erma Bombeck, O.Henry, James Herriot, Tom Bodett, and Garrison Keillor might be possibilities. David Isay's StoryCorps Project books might be of interest too, but I think they're less likely to be in large print. 4) Reader's Digest Large Print magazine 5) Check with your area literacy council or program. Ours has novels that are condensed into smaller books. 6) Try books with one or two characters. We received this request as well, and contacted Anne Seurynck. She said she has been handling this request for municipalities for a couple of years now, and that Smartprocure has just begun targeting libraries as well. She has routinely been denying these requests as "overly broad." They can also be denied, she said, if you don't use POs or don't have the preprogrammed software that generates these reports (we don't do or have either one.)
