Letters about Literature 2016 program announcement reminder

We hope to see letters from your patrons about the books that have changed their view of the world or themselves. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Library of Michigan is announcing the 2016 Letters about Literature<http://www.read.gov/letters/> program. We are the Michigan host for this national program from the Library of Congress. It is a reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. The 2016 letters will be due in two waves. Level III entries (grades (9-12) have a deadline of December 4, 2015 and Level I and II entries (grades 4-6 and 7-8) have a deadline of January 11, 2016. The state and national winners will be announced in May 2016. The Friends of Michigan Libraries (FOML) will hold a "Talk About Friends" discussion for Friends of the Library groups on Friday, November 13, 2015 in the McKune Room at the Chelsea District Library. This open discussion will run from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please bring your ideas to share with other Friends groups! Rural Libraries Program Submission Deadline is October 19

The call for proposals for the 2016 Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Library Conference is open through October 19. Submit your session proposal online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RLC2016 The conference will be held from May 4-6, 2016 at Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. This is a specially crafted to reach the informational needs of small and rural library staff members throughout Michigan. The event features vendors, awards, keynote speakers and an array of sessions geared to libraries serving small and rural communities. Rural Libraries Conference 2016: Recognize your peers for a job well done

Greetings Michigan Library Community, We all enjoy the feeling of being recognized by our peers for a job well done. This is your opportunity to take a few hours between now and January 8th to put together a nomination packet for one of four awards being given at RLC 2016 on Mackinac Island. Please consider who you know that meets the quality of excellence in the profession. Do you know someone at a small or rural library who is a leader in our profession? How about someone who goes the extra mile when working with children and teens? Do you have Trustee or Friend who goes above and beyond the call of duty to promote and advance your library? Do you know a small or rural library that truly excels (and that library could be you!) We want to hear from you! It's time again to nominate libraries, directors, librarians, employees, trustees, and friends of rural libraries for a Loleta Fyan Small and Rural Libraries Conference Awards. The conference will be held at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island May 4-6, 2016. Nominations are due by Friday, January 8, 2016. There will be four awards in 2016 (the same number as 2014). The categories are: * Outstanding Small/Rural Librarian Award * Trustee/Friend Award * Outstanding Youth/Children Award * The June B. Mendel Award for Excellence in Rural Library Service (this award goes to a small/rural library) Please note that Library Cooperative staff and conference planning committee chairs are not eligible for conference awards. To qualify for the award the library must serve a population of 25,000 or less. Branch locations of larger libraries do not qualify for nomination. E-Rate Training

E-Rate Training The Library of Michigan is partnering with the Michigan Department of Education to provide E-Rate training this fall. If you file for E-Rate, please consider taking advantage of these opportunities: The E-Rate Activity will be hosting three duplicate applicant trainings this fall. The day will cover changes to E-Rate as a result of the Modernization Orders as well as filing strategies. If you are new to E-Rate, it is highly advised that you attend the "E-Rate Applicant Beginner Training," on October 22, 2015 at Winding Brook (Shepherd, MI), in addition to one of the three "E-Rate Applicant Training" dates. Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: v Performs all routine duties of the circulation desk, including item circulation tasks, fines and fees collection, opening and closing procedures, and basic reference services. v Plans, supports, promotes, and conducts library programs and outreach activities. v Performs routine collection maintenance tasks, including shelving, item retrieval, collection development input, and weeding tasks. v Maintains library databases and files as connected to assigned tasks, including patron records, item records, and both electronic and physical files of library data. v Plans and implements special projects as assigned by supervisor or library director. v Performs other duties as assigned. Job requirements: v High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. v Valid driver’s license and available, reliable transportation. Ability to attend occasional training and other library-related events out of the area as assigned. v Ability to maintain a positive attitude of customer service and team spirit, even under trying circumstances. v Ability to communicate effectively and with professionalism, both with the public and with other members of staff.
