ARSL 2015 will be held at the beautiful Riverwalk Marriott <http://www.marriott.com/meeting-event-hotels/group-corporate-travel/groupCo…> in Little Rock, Arkansas Oct. 1-3rd,with pre-conferences and tours taking place Sept. 30th. While the conference hotel has officially sold out, overflow arrangements have been made with both the DoubleTree and Wyndham hotels. Cast!* This conference is completely dedicated to libraries that serve smaller and or rural populations. We are anticipating roughly 500 library workers and supporters to be in attendance and we welcome you to join us! Registration costs for ARSL 2015 begin at $263.50 (member rate),slightly more for non-members. This fee includes 3 days of learning, access to the welcome reception, breakfast (Thurs/Fri.), lunch (Thurs/Fri.), and a Saturday brunch. They all gave generously to groups like the Michigan Trails and Greenways Alliance and it is much appreciated. Second, I'd like all of them to know that I'm back out on the trail for a few months and I won't be available for presentations. Several of them have contacted me asking if I'm available. I'm not only 'not available' but I don't even know when I will be! Honestly, I'm flattered that they ask but I just don't know when I'll be back. Rest assured, I'm out here enjoying new experiences and gathering stories to add to my talk. I have to walk the walk before I can talk the talk! If you can do this for me, great. If not, no big deal. Wildlife Safari program from Canton MI

We recently had a summer reading program from Wildlife Safari. It was a terrific program with animals that kids could get up close to and pet. Hello everyone. Two of our dear friends and part-time Leelanau County authors have asked if I would share copies of their published works to any libraries in Michigan that would like them. Their publishing house (Two Canoes Press) is closing, and the titles will be available under a different imprint in the future. They are authors Priscilla Cogan and grandfather Duncan Sings-Alone. Attached is a list of the works they are offering free of charge to libraries (or school libraries if you would like to share with your local schools). If you will return email me which titles you would like, and the number of each if more than one, I will send them off via RIDES. I am thinking of allowing patrons to check out a guitar. Provides public, department and library-wide training on aspects of early childhood development and emergent literacy. Schedules speakers and trainers. Cultivates partnerships with community organizations and agencies that serve families by scheduling their programs in the library, participating in their events, cross-promoting services/events and networking. Assists in library promotion at general community events and Story Time visits as required. Maintains membership in state or national library or early childhood organizations, attends conferences and reads professional literature. Minimum Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or degree in education with emphasis on early childhood * At least two years of recent paid work experience with children ages 0-5 years preferably in an educational or library environment * Extensive knowledge of books and digital resources for ages 0-5 years * Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of early childhood development, family engagement practices and emergent literacy * Experience and expertise in programming, especially for parents, caregivers and children ages 0-5 years * Ability to interact in a professional, courteous and tactful manner to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and the public * Critical thinking skills, as applied to successfully serving the public and working with colleagues * Knowledge of literature, current events, and general information found helpful in resolving reference inquiries * Effective oral and written communication skills * Familiarity with current technology, i.e., general computer literacy, knowledge of the Internet, iPads and apps, and other electronic sources of information * Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint * Excellent understanding of public service values Physical Activity Requirements: [Degree of physical demands (strength) usually associated with the essential functions of the job] Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
