Library Snapshot Day June 13-17 #MiLibSnap
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 24 May '16

24 May '16

The Library of Michigan is spearheading an American Library Association (ALA) initiative this summer called Library Snapshot Day. It's a time for libraries to get out and use data to demonstrate the value and impact they have on their communities. In Michigan we're going to share this data via social media. Participation takes place during the week of June 13-17. You can participate one day or every day, and contribute via social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest using the hashtag #MiLibSnap. The event is scheduled after conference season and is well situated to support summer reading participation. We suggest that you pull stats out of your annual report or collect data such as door counts between now and snapshot day. The objective is to share the impact of your library on your community in eye-catching ways. Some ideas for demonstrating that impact include: Use photos of the staff and facilities to personalize and put a face on your library; promote programming activities, outreach events, author tours, genealogy, and local history resources; and use stats such as circulation numbers or door counts to make your point. Get creative. You already know what you do best. Check out the tools below for creating great visuals. Literacy
by Lois Hartman 24 May '16

24 May '16

I would like to hear from libraries that have done or are doing literacy programs; for either children or adults. I have a volunteer who is newly retired, has a lot of experience in this area and would like to start a program at our library. Neither of us know how to begin such an undertaking so I'm asking for direction in getting started on this. Any or all help would be appreciated. Even guidance to some good online resources would be welcome. Thanks. Lois Hartman Watervliet District Library

Advances in Library Administration and Organization CALL FOR CHAPTERS
by Elizabeth Martin 24 May '16

24 May '16

Call for proposals Advances in Library Administration and Organization 2017 Volume: Emotion in the Library Workplace Series Editor: Samantha Hines, Missoula College at the University of Montana Volume Editor: Miriam Matteson, Kent State University Emotions are prevalent in the library workplace leading to many questions and areas of analysis worth exploring. For example, what tools for developing emotional intelligence are used effectively in library workplaces? How can emotional labor be managed to minimize the negative effects of emotion work? How can library employees express authentic emotions while still adhering to service expectations? How does dispositional affect – how one experiences emotions - influence relationships in the workplace? What role does emotion play in effective as well as ideal library leadership and management? In this volume we welcome submissions that consider how emotions or related concepts such as affect, mood, or discrete feelings, intersect with library administration. The first 2017 volume of Advances in Library Administration and Organization will focus on the role of emotions in the library workplace. ALAO offers long-form research, comprehensive discussions of theoretical developments, and in-depth accounts of evidence-based practice in library administration and organization. The series aims to answer the questions, “How have libraries been managed, and how should they be managed?” It goes beyond a platform for the sharing of research to provide a venue for dialogue across issues, in a way that traditional peer reviewed journals cannot. Through this series, practitioners can glean new approaches in challenging times and collaborate on the exploration of scholarly solutions to professional quandaries. We are currently seeking proposals for the 2017 volume on emotions in the library workplace. If you are interested in being part of this volume, please send a proposal including author details and estimated length of final submission to Samantha Hines at Samantha.hines(a)umontana.edu<mailto:Samantha.hines@umontana.edu> by July 15, 2016. Submission deadlines: Submission deadline for proposals: July 15, 2016 Notification of acceptance sent by: August 31, 2016 Submission deadline for full chapters: October 31, 2016 Comments returned to authors: December 31, 2016 Submission deadline for chapter revisions: February 15, 2017 -- Beth Martin GVSU University Libraries Head of Professional Programs / Economics Liaison Steelcase Library, DEV 132A 616.331.7344 martelia(a)gvsu.edu http://libguides.gvsu.edu/economics
