The money will help youth who have experienced foster care go to college. "The generosity of people from the Grand Rapids area and around the state will help foster youths go to college and realize their dreams," said Robin Lott, Executive Director of Michigan Education Trust (MET). "Education is vitally important to Michigan's young people and to the state itself. However, many foster youths lack the support and financial resources that other young people have. That's why Fostering Futures Scholarship is so important." One hundred eighty people attended the event at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park on June 23rd. The attendees enjoyed dinner and music, bought raffle tickets for prizes and bid on items in a silent auction. All monies raised will benefit Michiganders who have been in foster care. Seventy percent of youth exiting foster care nationally say they want to attend college, but fewer than ten percent who graduate from high school enroll in college and less than one percent of those graduate from college, according to Casey Family Programs. If you would like to make a donation or find out more information about the Detroit fundraising event or the Pizza Party on the Capitol Lawn visit the Charitable page on MET's website www.SetwithMet.com<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…>. ________________________________ School's out for Summer - Advice on Saving for College It may be summer vacation, but you should not put school completely out of your mind. Another school year has come to an end. It seems like each year goes by faster and faster; before you know it your child is going to be graduating high school and heading off to college! Will you be ready? As college tuition prices continue to climb it is important to make sure you and your child are prepared for these future expenses. Will you have enough money? Does your child understand how different majors and different schools may affect his or her tuition costs? Here are some ideas of things you can do during the summer to help you prepare for the day your child goes off to college: Register for a 529 plan First, if you have not set up a 529 plan, do it. 529 plans are recognized as one of the best ways to save for college. Michigan has a couple of different plans to choose from. The Michigan Education Trust<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> (MET) is Michigan's 529 prepaid tuition program. You purchase credits at today's rates to use for future tuition costs. The MET program can be used for tuition at in-state, out-of-state, public or private schools. The Michigan Education Savings Program<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkP…> (MESP) is a 529 direct-sold investment savings account. It works a lot like a 401k. You put money into an account and choose from nine different investment options. When your child attends college the account balance can be used for tuition, room and board, books, etc. Both programs offer a tax deduction on your State of Michigan tax return. And when you use the money for qualified education expenses, earnings are tax-exempt. Contribute to your 529 plan Now that you have your 529 plan set-up, you need to find ways to contribute to it. You always have the option of setting up automatic monthly payments in the account. You can also have friends and family make a contribution for events like birthdays and holidays. However, let's think of some other ways you can grow your 529 plan. Perhaps your child just finished a milestone year-did they graduate from preschool, kindergarten or junior high? These are all great reasons to put an extra payment into their 529 account. Perhaps they earned good grades. Maybe each "A" gets an additional $10 added to their account. Also, think about all the money you spent on school lunches this year. You could take that $5/day and add that to your account. Over the twelve weeks of summer, it would add up to an additional $720 in college savings. It may be only July, but it is never too early to think about the start of the new school year-maybe make a "back-to-school" contribution. That contribution will make more of an impact than another new shirt. And don't forget to get the kids involved. If you have older kids with summer jobs have them contribute some of those earnings into their college savings. Babysitting and lawn mowing money can add up fast! Get them thinking about college It is never too early or too late to get your child thinking about college. For middle school age and older children have them do research on career fields that interest them. They should think about what kind of education is required for that field, what kind of salary they would earn, etc. Is there a particular school they are interested in attending? Does that school offer the degree they want? How much does that school cost? Is there another school that is just as good, but cheaper? A good way to get younger kids involved is to visit different college campuses. You don't have to do the official college tour-go to a sporting event, play or see a musical performance. Every school has some gem the locals like to go and see. Visit the book store, botanical gardens or campus library. You could even take a ride around campus on your bike and see the sights. Early exposure to colleges can spark an interest in higher education. Have a great summer! ________________________________ In case you missed out.. MI Student Aid kicked-off their webinar series in May, which featured a presentation by Maddy Day, Director of Outreach and Training for Center for Fostering Success at Western Michigan University, who discussed resources and support that have been developed to increase access and success in post-secondary education for students from foster care. All, TLN is offering a bulk buying opportunity for the new (release date is tomorrow, June 22) Bridge Magazine book Poison on Tap (A Bridge Magazine Analysis): How Government Failed Flint, and the Heroes Who Fought Back. I do not anticipate any discounted pricing for this book. Rather, we are offering this buy as a convenience for libraries that may not have the time or staff resources to procure this book themselves. The Flint water crisis was and still is a prominent news story, and Bridge Magazine is a highly respected publication. TLN will assess a $1.00 per book charge to help partially offset the cost of this project. Please see the MLive article regarding the book: http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2016/06/flint_water_crisis_book_focuse.… Poison on Tap (A Bridge Magazine Analysis): How Government Failed Flint, and the Heroes Who Fought Back by The Staff of Bridge Magazine (Author) Paperback: 330 pages Publisher: Mission Point Press (June 1, 2016) ISBN-13: 9781943995080 $19.95 Please send your orders to me by no later than Tuesday, July 5. Ribbon Cutting Planned for 11am on Saturday, July 30 For Chelsea District Library's Upcoming World War I Centennial Historic Display
by Keegan Sulecki 14 Jul '16

14 Jul '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Promote Michigan <promotemichigan(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Jul 12, 2016 at 8:06 AM Subject: MEDIA ALERT: Ribbon Cutting Planned for 11am on Saturday, July 30 For Chelsea District Library's Upcoming World War I Centennial Historic Display To: Promote Michigan <promotemichigan(a)gmail.com> *[image: cid:image007.png@01D1DAAF.3CD355B0]* ** MEDIA ALERT ** *Ribbon Cutting Planned for 11am on Saturday, July 30 For Chelsea District Library’s Upcoming * *World War I Centennial Historic Display: Strong Foundations, New Possibilities* *WHAT:* As part of a continuing effort to chronicle Chelsea’s history, the Chelsea District Library <http://www.chelseadistrictlibrary.org> presents *World War I Centennial: Strong Foundations, New Possibilities*, commemorating the centennial anniversary of WWI. The library has created and produced several community events focused on art and culture including WWI-era photographs, letters, stories and artifacts from local residents. The collection culminates with the installation of two dozen 36-inch x 18-inch avenue banners hung on light posts lining Main Street, as well as twelve large-format images (ranging in size from 55-inch x 91-inch to 167-inch x 96-inch) placed on 11 community buildings. The 36 images chosen to be reproduced and displayed were among hundreds submitted by Chelsea residents who have shared histories from the Great War. This includes the only-known remaining photo of Herbert J. McKune, a local Chelsea soldier who died on October 4, 1918 during the Battle of Champlain in France. This photo is permanently on display at the Chelsea American Legion Post #31, which was named in his honor. A reproduction of this image will be featured on a banner gracing the library’s front steps. *PHOTO & VIDEO OPS: Installation of banners and large-format images will begin July 11 and will take approximately two weeks to complete, weather permitting. * All images selected to be displayed are being added to this Facebook album <https://www.facebook.com/ChelseaDistrictLibrary/photos/?tab=album&album_id=…> throughout the month of July. *WHO:* The original concept for this project came from Deborah Greer, co-director of Chelsea River Gallery <http://www.chelsearivergallery.com/>, who was moved by a 2013 PBS documentary about artist Marian Marzynski titled ‘Before I Was Anybody, I Was a Child Survivor of the Holocaust’. It featured large-scale outdoor banners with images of child Holocaust survivors from Warsaw. Inspired to bring the presentation concept to her community, Deborah shared her ideas with the library staff when they were looking for a way to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War. Recognizing the available canvases in the form of towering historic buildings, which could display a series of larger-than-life images, the concept for *Strong Foundations, New Possibilities* was born. *WHEN: * Ribbon cutting: Saturday, July 30, 2016 (11-11:30am) featuring a welcome by Mayor Jason Lindauer, comments from the centennial committee and a musical rendition of “In Flanders Field” <http://www.greatwar.co.uk/poems/john-mccrae-in-flanders-fields.htm>* – a war poem written during WWI by Canadian physician, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. ****This is one of the most popular and most quoted poems from the war and its references to the red poppies that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers resulted in the remembrance poppy becoming one of the world's most recognized memorial symbols for soldiers who have died in conflict. Volunteers from the Chelsea VFW Post & Auxiliary 4076 will be on hand to take donations for their Buddy Poppy Program during the event. * Docents will host free guided tours of the historic installations from Noon until 2pm, following the ribbon cutting ceremony. Space is limited to 25 people per trip, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The south side tour includes bus transportation to the start of the walking tour, while the north side tour will begin at the library steps. The Chelsea Historical Society will also be giving tours of Chelsea’s Historic Oak Grove Cemetery, pointing out gravesites for local area WWI veterans, including some featured on the banners. *Strong Foundations, New Possibilities* is held in conjunction with the city’s annual Sounds & Sights Festival, and will be on display through Veteran’s Day, November 11. *WHERE: * The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at the Chelsea District Library, 221 South Main Street, followed by free guided tours throughout town. Maps for self-guided tours will be available free for those who wish to explore the exhibit on their own. Private guided group tours can be made during the 5-month exhibit, with prior arrangement. Artifacts will also be on display inside the Chelsea District Library through November 11, including a helmet, binoculars, sword, riffle, medals, journal, uniform and more. *WHY:* More than 100 years ago, America was gripped in the midst of World War I (July 28, 1914 – November 11, 1918). It affected U.S. troops overseas and families back home in communities across the country, including those in the southeast Michigan town of Chelsea, in Washtenaw County. *Strong Foundations New Possibilities* is a chance for this community to share its stories. *EVENTS: * *Wednesday, August 10 (6:30-8pm) — McKune Room @ Chelsea District Library * *General John J. Pershing’s Hello Girls:* *When the U.S. entered WWI in 1917, General John “Black Jack” Pershing insisted on bilingual phone operators near the front and the “Hello Girls” were formed, enlisting support from Bell Telephone. During this historical interpretation, Lois Sprengnether Keel portrays Oleda Joure, a 16-year-old Marine City, Michigan (103 miles northeast of Chelsea) teenager who received special permission to enlist. In uniform and with music, Lois will tell the story of how pre-war, Oleda and her brother were weekend musicians. When she arrived in England and was asked to entertain the troops like her brother, she had to refuse due to her Oath and risk of court-martial. After the war, the Girls learned the army considered them contractors, not deserving benefits. They did not receive recognition until 1977. Learn about this group of heroic women of southeastern Michigan, including their only death abroad. Library visits
by Joann Crater 14 Jul '16

14 Jul '16

Hi!On the way home from the Rural Library Conference we (my staff that was rooked into helping the hospitality aspect of the conference) were chatting about how fun it was to see all the librarians/staff from the libraries that we "see" on MEL labels. I had the crazy idea of challenging everyone statewide to keep track of the times you visit other libraries and at the next conference we could have a drawing for one of the fabulous gift baskets to give to you. Well, that has fallen by the wayside for now....but I am trying to visit as many libraries as I can on any of my little jaunts that I take. Today on my run up to Hastings quick, I beeped at Angela in Marshall, I was there recently... pulled up in front of Putnam but they were closed.....but awesome building...can't wait to go back and see how they have stuff in there. Missed Hastings by going around the wrong block (still had the son with me so had to keep going!!). Coming home I went up to Lake Odessa and toured their fabulous building....and awesome island in the middle of the work area!! Stopped in Sunfield but they were closed also. Now my mind is twirling about office space, storage space and our hours. So here... I challenge you to stretch a bit....stop and see a library you have never seen before.....and join me in my little Michigan Adventure!! :)Ha...we need passports....oh....don't get me started!!! lol Joann CraterDirectorHudson Carnegie District Library (zv170)205 S.
