I am writing to tell you of a resource I recently discovered through a colleague in Chicago, Pam Rogers. There are FREE downloadable videos from Head Start’s training webpage modeling interactions between teachers and children around language development, early literacy, cognitive development. http://www.earlylit.net/s/Head-Start-Videos-on-Language-Development.docx All are welcome to use these in whatever ways are useful to you. There are other aids if you would like to explore their website. https://eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov/hslc/tta-system/teaching/practice/crosswalk.h… The second url has the same headings and some videos when you click on Instructional Support. The videos here are more narrative for the teacher. Those in the first url link directly to modeling the behaviors noted. Do any of your libraries incorporate zooming (music, dance/movement) into your story times? We would like to start using this method, but need some pointers. Free Library Related Webinars for September 2016
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 08 Sep '16

08 Sep '16

Greetings! Our September free webinar list is now up and ready. Please check out all of the wonderful offerings at http://michigan.gov/libraryce . Highlights include: Wednesday, Sep. 14 (12-1 pm) Pokémon! How Two Libraries Scored Major Points with a Game Craze (Programming Librarian) http://www.programminglibrarian.org/learn/ For 10 years, the Prince George Public Library (PGPL) in British Columbia, Canada, has hosted downtown walking tours highlighting historic buildings and landmarks. The recent "Pokémon Go" phenomenon has led to an increase in downtown foot traffic, drawing Pokémon players to these historic sites, many of which are Pokéstops. Seeing an opportunity for outreach, PGPL began guided "'Pokémon Go' Walking Tours," in which players can learn about the history of Prince George while battling for gyms, collecting Pokémon and hatching their eggs. This presentation will share how PGPL was able to work this unique mobile app into a thriving, educational program. Through simple social media posts, traditional paper marketing and some of the silliest conversations of their careers, the staff of the Pryor (Okla.) Public Library used "Pokémon Go" to reach new library users and increase their "street cred" among current users. Learn how your library can use the game's augmented reality feature to engage patrons on social media, place lures to draw patrons and Pokémon to the library, and create fun in-house marketing to let your patrons know that your library knows what's up. For more information and to register, visit: http://www.programminglibrarian.org/learn/ Wednesday, Sep 21 (10-11 am) Health and Wellness at Your Library (National Network of Libraries of Medicine) Public libraries are uniquely situated to play a key role in improving community health, and there are many ways to leverage existing resources and services to address health and wellness. This presentation will highlight successful consumer health services and community partnerships in two public libraries in Kansas. In addition to sharing ideas for programs and activities, we will also discuss how public librarians and medical librarians can work together to help meet the community's health information needs. Put on your thinking caps, and come prepared to join in the conversation! This session is for anyone interested in consumer health outreach, and partnerships between libraries and community organizations. For more information and to register, visit: https://nnlm.gov/mcr/education/breezing Wednesday, Sep. 28 (12-1 pm) Coding Clubs: Youth Programming for Public Libraries (TechSoup) https://cc.readytalk.com/registration/#/?meeting=talr0jorrgs3&campaign=3hqu… Does your library offer programs related to coding? Coding is quickly gaining traction as an essential digital skill in the 21st century, and many public libraries are offering coding classes for youth and adults as a way of promoting STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The challenge is that coding is often a new skill for librarians and library staff who are responsible for offering programs. The good news is that you don't have to be an expert in computer science to offer effective educational programs that teach coding skills. There are many free resources that can be used as a guide to starting a coding club at your library, no experience required. Come to this free webinar to hear about two examples of public libraries that have offered coding clubs using free curriculum provided by library partners. Re: [Michlib-l] FOIA Requests
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 07 Sep '16

Hi Nannette: Please see attached. Let me know if you would like any further explanation. Unfortunately there does not seem to be much that you can do in this situation under FOIA other than to know what the law does and does NOT require, and have really good rules in place and then apply them strictly and evenly. The law tends to be very much on the requestors’ side except in really specific circumstances. If a real problem develops, your safest recourse is to consult your attorney, who can provide you with options based on the particular circumstances of the situation. Your attorney could also review your rules and see if there is any tweaking that could be done to assist you in these types of situations. I hope the attached helps Please let me know if there is anything else I can assist with! Clare Clare D. Membiela, MLS, J.D. Is there ever a point where it just becomes harassment? All of the statistics she originally asked for are in our state aid reports, so I directed her to the links on our website. I have a feeling she is going to come back over and over wanting more detailed information. Is there a way to stop it? A local resident sent a letter wanting our statistics for 5 years, including number of people using the library, number of cards issued, computer usage, budget and income/expense statements, and my salary. We put links to the Annual State Aid Reports on our website and I referred her to those, as allowed by FOIA. She now wants everything by the month. I explained I would have to charge her to do the work to compile those monthly numbers, and she said she doesn't care. Based on other things she and her little band who don't think Elk Rapids needs a library are doing I'm sure this is just to make things difficult.
