Classroom Sets

A local high school cleaned their book room and we offered to try to pass along the books. We have several boxes (with 30-40 copies each) of the book Please Stop Laughing at Me by Jodee Blanco. They are in very good to excellent condition. I would prefer to give them away by the box rather than as individual copies. We are starting an interior renovation on August 1, so we need them in a new home before the end of July. Please let me know if you or someone you know is interested and we can arrange for pick-up/delivery. DEADLINE July 14 to submit a Harwood Institute training application

The Library of Michigan<http://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan> and MCLS are pleased to promote a second round of our several-month long community engagement training program for Michigan library staff. The training will be led by coaches from the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation<http://www.theharwoodinstitute.org/> . It will be robust, extensive, and is being offered at no charge to selected Michigan libraries, with generous stipends provided through Library of Michigan LSTA funding. The program On October 5-6, 2016, a cohort of up to 50 Michigan library staff will convene in Lansing, Michigan for a 1.5 day workshop led by two certified Harwood Institute coaches. That training will be followed up by nine months of coaching calls from Harwood, and guidance and support from Harwood trained Library of Michigan and MCLS staff. The Harwood Public Innovators Workshop is a 1.5 day experience to help you and your organization learn what it means to turn outward - to use the community, not your conference room, as your reference point for choices and action. Although free of charge to participate, this program will be rigorous. With support and guidance from MCLS and the Library of Michigan, cohort members are expected to develop action plans, implement those plans, and demonstrate how their efforts are making a change in their communities. Only those who can commit the time and energy are encouraged to participate. The Library of Michigan and MCLS have been using the tools of the Harwood Institute and sharing them with libraries since 2013. We are excited to be able to support training for a cohort of Michigan library staff. Eligibility * Applicants must be an employee or trustee of a Michigan library. * Applicants may be from any type of library; academic, public, school, institutional or special. * A maximum of 2 persons per library will be awarded scholarships. * It is strongly encouraged that applications include two persons. Applications including two persons will be ranked higher based on our criteria. * Collaborative applications with individuals from different libraries in geographic proximity are welcomed, and will receive the same ranking as two individuals from the same library. o Libraries that have already sent staff to Harwood training and are looking for additional training would also have equal consideration. The award * Those awarded this opportunity will receive free tuition for the training and follow-up support. * Those awarded will receive stipends for two nights hotel lodging (strongly encouraged October 4 and 5) and travel expenses. The stipends will be on a sliding scale depending on the distance of travel from Lansing, MI: * Zone 1 (Less than 100 miles from Lansing, MI) the library will receive $395 for a single person, and an additional $295 for the second. It is encouraged to carpool to conserve resources. * Zone 2 (100-250 miles from Lansing, MI) the library will receive $545 for a single person, and an additional $295 for the second. It is encouraged to carpool to conserve resources. * Zone 3 (More than 250 miles from Lansing, MI) the library will receive $795 for a single person, and an additional $295 for the second. It is encouraged to carpool to conserve resources. * In the event of a collaborative submission please note in the application which library/participant is responsible for transportation. A space is included in the application for this. Meals and lodging are included. Dinner on Wednesday October 5, will be a dine-around. That meal is factored into the travel stipend. The workshop will be held at Lansing Community College - West Campus. Lodging will be at a nearby hotel. There will be a pre-workshop dinner held in Lansing on Tuesday evening October 4, 2016. Timetable - Deadlines * Applications must be submitted by 5pm (Eastern) July 14, 2016. * Notification to recipients will be on or before August 5, 2016. Checks (payable to the library) will soon follow. * Recipients will need to make their own hotel reservations. It is encouraged to make the reservations as soon as possible after notification. MAP: Twice As Much Fun As Last Year AND Another New Partner, Too!

All, A couple of quick MAP updates: 1. We welcome the Albert L. Lorenzo Cultural Center http://www.lorenzoculturalcenter.com/ in Clinton Township as our newest (and 427th, if you are keeping track) partner destination in the MAP program. Thanks for getting on board with the Michigan Activity Pass program! 2. MAP is twice as much fun as last year. How can that be, and how do we know? Well, you've already circulated more than twice as many MAP passes during the period May 24, 2016 through June 30, 2016 (and June 30 is still young; the rest of today we will see big MAP reservation numbers) as was the case for May 24, 2015 through June 30, 2015. Therefore, we can conclude that library patrons find MAP to be twice as much fun as last year! Thank you for your support and promotion of the Michigan Activity Pass program.
