Clare came to LM after 13 years at WMU Cooley where she was the Associate Director for Library and Instructional Support. Prior to moving to Lansing she was the Head of Reference Services at the University of Miami Law Library. Clare has a JD from the University of Miami and MLS from Southern Connecticut State University. paid time off ?

I'm trying to figure out and equitable management of paid time off for my staff. The quirky part is pto is established as a number of days. All staff though have different numbers of hours that constitute their "days". This is essentially unequal in that one may be getting an 8 hour vacation day while another gets a 5 hour vacation day. Initially I was operating on the understanding that a week off would reimburse an employee for the pay they would normally get in a work week. I have had a few issues of staff asking for an unpaid day off when they work a short shift to save their longer days for reimbursement. I understand their point of view but theoretically I could have an instance of staff taking an unlimited amount of time off if they requested it without pay. This is problematic to me from a management standpoint because it either leaves us understaffed and consequently giving poor customer service or I have to fill in those hours and it might of necessity have to be filled by an employee with a higher wage and that could potentially impact our budgeted costs for personnel. We have three PD events this month and hope you will join us! *July 12 - 14* *Making as Learning for Youth* *Centreville, MI* *(in Southwest Michigan near Indiana Border)* Looking to add open-ended, hands-on learning to the youth in your school, library, community center, troop, or civic group? The maker movement offers youth the opportunity to explore the intersection of STEM, technology, design, aesthetics, creativity, and prototyping. In this workshop, you’ll become immersed in exploring the facets of the maker movement. Over the course of three days, you will meet fellow maker mentors, examine multiple possible entry points for developing or refining your maker program, identify pathways for discovering maker and community needs, design and explore possible programming ideas for formal and informal learning, and grapple with how to mesh together open-endedness assessing them fairly, You’ll engage in a variety of hands-on activities, from creating with recycled materials to 3D printing and modeling, robots to LED bulbs, so you can test out multiple materials and tools to see which fit your community best. You’ll come away with concrete ideas you can use to build or enhance making for the youth in your community.
