MLA Academic Libraries 2016 is a day-long event that will focus on library service in the context of higher education. Join us on May 20, 2016 in Lansing to hear speakers, view posters, and participate in discussions that will help you become an advocate for excellent customer service at your library. Here is just a sample of the day's offerings: Everything is a Service: New Perspectives on Assessing the Library Using Service Design Academic librarians are not new to designing or assessing services, but we tend to develop these services in isolation from other services we offer. We need to see the whole library as an integrated and tightly coupled system. Enter service design. Service design is a holistic, co-creative methodology that puts the user at the center of the service delivery model. Service design offers a framework and mindset to assess and contextualize services so we can see the whole picture. When viewed this way, the library's interconnections are made tangible and we, as service providers, can see the library as a unified experience as our users do. The end result is better service for our users. Joe Marquez, Reed College Library Emotions in the Library Workplace Academic librarians, like other service professionals, are expected to display certain emotions as part of their basic job responsibilities: smiling through a difficult interaction with a faculty member; calming a panicked undergraduate student; feigning enthusiasm for a bad idea that comes from higher administration. This presentation explores the emotion process as it occurs in the workplace, summarizes the core constructs of emotional labor (EL), and suggests practices librarians can use to effectively manage emotional regulation for effective service. Wayne State Seeks Nominations for 2016 Professional Service Award

The Wayne State School of Library and Information Science at Wayne State University requests nominations for its 2016 Professional Service Award. THE PROFESSIONAL SERVICE AWARD acknowledges Wayne State alumni and other individuals who have made significant and sustained contributions to the Michigan library community during their careers and have supported the School of Library and Information Science. The Professional Service Award recognizes individuals who, for example, have been leaders in state, regional, and/or national professional associations, and/or have held leadership roles in activities related to their positions. Recipients of SLIS awards are selected by a School committee made up of faculty, staff, and students. The awards are announced at the Annual Recognition Ceremony. This year's ceremony will be held on the WSU campus on Thursday, September 15, 2016. Howdy! Maker Office Hours are back this Friday, April 1 noon-1pm. This month's topic is *3D Printing and Modeling*. We'll talk for 15 minutes or so about options for using various 3D modeling tools to help students and patrons really become creators of 3D models, not just printers/consumers of others' designs. This creator/consumer tug-of-war is something we struggle with a lot, so we imagine we're not the only ones! Then we'll open up the conversation for your ideas, questions, and concerns. All Aboard With MAP For the Big House

What is he talking about now??? Someday in the future the proposed WALLY commuter rail service might come to pass. Maybe then one will be able to take a train to THE Big House to watch the game on Saturday, as was the case in years past. Until that happens, you can go "All Aboard" at one of our two new MAP partners, New Buffalo Railroad Museum http://new-buffalo-railroad-museum.org/ And if you can't procure a ticket to THE Big House in Ann Arbor, why not spend a Saturday afternoon taking a tour of a slightly smaller but certainly no less significant Big House, in the form of our other soon to be MAP partner, Allegan Old Jail Museum http://alleganoldjail.com/ As of today we have added a total of 14 new partner destinations for MAP for 2016-2017. Hello all, The message below is from Mary Doria Russell (author of The Sparrow, Children of God, A Thread of Grace, Dreamers of the Day, Doc and Epitaph). It was posted on her blog, not sent to me directly! "Once again, I’m turning to you for help with the next novel. An Unremembered Life (yes, new working title) is the story of Annie Clements, who was once known around the world as America’s Joan of Arc. This extraordinary 25-year-old woman was a pivotal figure in the labor movement of the Progressive Age. In 1913, she led a strike that shut down 20 copper mines for nearly a year in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Obviously, there are few (if any) people who remember those days directly, but I’m hoping some of you have family memories of strikes that have been passed down. The strikes don’t need to be as early as 1913, nor do they have to be about striking miners. They could also be about storekeepers in towns where a strike is ongoing, for example. Because the novel is about a strike at a copper company where there were only two women employed (as office workers), I’m particularly interested in the experience of the wives and children of strikers because so little has been written about them. How were food and clothing collected and shared? What kind of meals women managed to put on the table, what sort of support they got from other unions, etc. Did the children continue to go to school in company towns? How were they affected?
