This led to developing a web page of Resources for Bilingual Library Programs for Spanish-Speaking Children and Families at https://www.tsl.texas.gov/ldn/youthservices/Spanish, which includes indexes to 86 programs in those manuals plus many other programming resources. The web page is still a work in progress and I hope you will let me know if you have suggestions for links to any additional resources. If the site will be helpful to librarians in your states, please feel free to share the link. Libraries Read: 1 Book discussion events - Michigan location added! Nicholas Carr asked, in a celebrated Atlantic Monthly cover story. Carr delves further into the question in his book The Shallows: What The Internet Is Doing To Our Brains, the selected title for "Libraries Read: 1 Book." MCLS invited library staff across Indiana and Michigan to place votes on one of four titles to select one book that we will all read and discuss together for professional development. Nicholas Carr's book captured the most votes. In The Shallows, he explores the net's intellectual and cultural consequences. MCLS encourages library staff to read the book throughout the summer, then join us in a Twitter chat and regional discussions about the book. According to Randy Dykhuis, MCLS Executive Director, "During 2014, MCLS conducted a series of community conversations with librarians throughout Indiana and Michigan, utilizing the tools from the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation. The desire to have discussions in many formats, and to communicate with one another outside of our silos was a recurring theme. This workshop will teach users how Library of Congress call numbers are created. You will learn what the different LC designations are. You will learn what cutters are and how to assign them using the cutter table. Users will assign call numbers to items. Library Director, Ridgefield (CT) Library The dynamic Ridgefield Library <http://www.ridgefieldlibrary.org/index.shtml> seeks an engaged and energized leader as its next Library Director. Working in partnership with the 16-member Board of Directors, a creative and committed staff, and 25,000 generous and supportive residents, the Library Director will lead the Library in providing a vision for 21st century services and programs. The successful candidate will have the desire and ability to develop effective community partnerships, explore entrepreneurial activities, support and engage in ongoing fundraising, and share a strong philosophy of service and civic participation. A new (2014) $20 million state-of-the-art building offers the opportunity to lead a talented staff team (27.5 FTE) in this vibrant community. The Ridgefield Library, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, has an annual budget of $2.6 million and is primarily supported by town appropriation in conjunction with significant fundraising endeavors and contributions. Minimum requirements are a Bachelor's Degree in business, liberal arts, or library science and a minimum of six years of experience leading as an executive director, director, or senior staff position in complex organizations or the equivalent background and experience that will enable the candidate to effectively perform the work required. Desired qualifications include demonstrable proficiency in strategic planning, policy development and execution; strong fundraising skills and experience; demonstrated working knowledge and execution of business processes in a large operation; demonstrated successful fiscal management skills; successful leadership of a medium/large staff; and an excellent understanding of project management. Additional abilities include managing change, communicating effectively, providing excellent customer service, maintaining relationships with major donors, supporters, and other community leaders, and working effectively with elected officials and other public constituencies. The successful candidate must live within a reasonable commute distance of the Town of Ridgefield. A Master's Degree in business, public administration, education or library science and experience reporting to a governing Board are preferred. ALA Accepting Emerging Leaders Applications until August 1

A great program and a great way to get plugged in to ALA, professional service, and continuing education. -Steve -------------------------------------------- The American Library Association (ALA) is still accepting applications<http://www.ala.org/cfapps/emergingleaders/index.cfm> for the 2017 class of Emerging Leaders (EL). Details on the program criteria as well as a link to the application can be found on the Emerging Leaders Web page<http://www.ala.org/educationcareers/leadership/emergingleaders/>. The deadline to apply is August 1, 2016. The ALA EL program is a leadership development program which enables newer library workers from across the country to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. It puts participants on the fast track to ALA committee volunteerism as well as other professional library-related organizations. An ALA division, round table, ethnic affiliate, state chapter or school library media affiliate will sponsor nearly all of the selected applicants. Each sponsor will contribute a minimum of $1,000 toward expenses of attending the ALA Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference ($500 for each conference). Sponsorship is not required for participation in the program. A list of sponsoring units is included as part of the online application.
