Calling All Librarians --- I would like to invite you to a special event sponsored by the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS). They need input from libraries of all types, sizes, and geographic areas to make this effort an authentic representation of Michigan libraries. Please consider joining them and sharing your thoughts, challenges, and hopes for the greater Michigan library community. You do not have to be an expert. They want you to speak openly and candidly from your experience and point of view. The dates, times, and locations are listed below. All library staff are welcome. To have a meaningful conversation, we will limit the number of attendees at each session to 12. Because of this, we request that you consider limiting the number of attendees from your library system. Registration is free and on a "first come, first served" basis. A waiting list will be kept. Registration Now Open for New & Advanced Director Workshops!

Greetings! Registration is now open for the Library of Michigan's annual New & Advanced Director workshops. In order for your library to be eligible for state aid, all new public library directors and all directors newly appointed in the state of Michigan must attend one or both of these workshops. New Director Workshop (September 15, 2016) - required for all new library directors within 12 months after appointment. Advanced Director Workshop (September 16, 2016) - required for all new Class IV-VI library directors within 24 months of appointment. We welcome staff to attend that do not need to workshop to meet certification as well. Topics included would be of interest to all library class sizes. The deadline to register and also to cancel with a full refund is 5 pm on Wednesday, September 7th. Evette M. MHSLA Conference Registration

Good Morning! We would like to remind you that registration for the 2016 MHSLA (Michigan Health Science Librarians Association) Annual Conference is open! The conference will be held on October 12-14, 2016 at the Baronette Renaissance Hotel in Novi, Michigan. In addition to her professional work, Gore also writes the popular blog A Librarian by Any Other Name, which discusses libraries, information and knowledge management, health sciences, and translational science. There are also some great Continuing Education courses to choose from. On Wednesday morning, Jessi Van Der Volgen will be teaching a 4 hour MLA CE Course Lean Process Improvement Demystified. This course will prepare librarians to lead and foster innovation and Lean process improvement within their institutions. This course will familiarize participants with innovation concepts and Lean philosophy and methodologies for sustaining efficiencies and new revenue sources. This course will also examine the leadership roles librarians can forge with these key health care transformation strategies. Participants will learn through discussion, hands-on activities, case studies, and other methods. Content will include the five stages of innovation - ideation, stakeholder & market analysis, solution development, verification and validation. In addition, Lean processes including the various components of an A3 Lean template and tools that can be used while applying Lean principles will be explained. These tools include swim lanes, 5 Whys, 5S, Gemba, Kaizen, Poka-Yoke, Root Cause Analysis and Value Stream Mapping. The four hour course will focus on lean process improvement, and not include innovation. Participants will learn through group discussions, personal plan development, case studies, and other methods. Using Music to Promote Libraries

Hi MichLib, Here at CADL we've been using music promotions to get the word out about our library system. Currently, we're running a promotion where patrons can win a guitar signed by country star Dierks Bentley - we're calling it our "Star Guitar" promotion. To get the word out about the contest, we hosted a "site takeover" on local radio station's sites. Attached is an example. We've also looked at local concerts and festivals as opportunities for promotion. Using hoopla (the digital service I'm sure many of your library systems also have), we asked patrons to check out digital albums from the service to be entered to win tickets to Common Ground Music Festival. The more items the patron checked out, the better their odds of winning tickets. The contest also improved our hoopla usage. We have had 7,379 hoopla checkouts this year, as opposed to 3,018 for the same period last year. Last, our "Everything Right Here" ad campaign takes inspiration from local Lansing musician Taylor Taylor's music. She acts as a face of our campaign in certain outlets, appearing in commercials for the library, like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Y51KCFcqcg&feature=youtu.be Is anyone else using music to promote their library? The Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR) webinar series continues with two upcoming webinars: Story Time - Part One (focus on babies) on Thursday, July 14th and Story Time - Part Two (focus on toddlers and PreK) on Monday, August 22nd, both are at 2pm. The webinars will be recorded for registered participants. There is also a webinar scheduled for Thursday, November 10th, also at 2pm. IFLA Genealogy & Local History Preconference

Good afternoon. I am with The Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library and we are hosting the IFLA Genealogy & Local History Preconference. Would it be possible to have this information added to your listserv? The Allen County Public Library is pleased to support an IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations) Genealogy & Local History Preconference on August 10 - 11, 2016 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The preconference is free to attend. This preconference will feature presentations and discussions on technologies and strategies for finding, saving and presenting (1) records, (2) family histories and (3) living memory in the twenty-first century as well as how these resources are made available worldwide. Come for the first day of interactive presentations and stay for the second day of unconference sessions and tours if your schedule permits. International organizations will discuss their current efforts, technologies, and resources; state and regional organizations will demonstrate successful projects; and a second group of offerings will highlight the importance of story and interviewing techniques for preserving life stories. A theme woven through this preconference is recognizing and building virtual information networks to both preserve and present records, stories, and living memory.
