ALA Accepting Emerging Leaders Applications until August 1

A great program and a great way to get plugged in to ALA, professional service, and continuing education. -Steve -------------------------------------------- The American Library Association (ALA) is still accepting applications<http://www.ala.org/cfapps/emergingleaders/index.cfm> for the 2017 class of Emerging Leaders (EL). Details on the program criteria as well as a link to the application can be found on the Emerging Leaders Web page<http://www.ala.org/educationcareers/leadership/emergingleaders/>. The deadline to apply is August 1, 2016. The ALA EL program is a leadership development program which enables newer library workers from across the country to participate in problem-solving work groups, network with peers, gain an inside look into ALA structure, and have an opportunity to serve the profession in a leadership capacity. It puts participants on the fast track to ALA committee volunteerism as well as other professional library-related organizations. An ALA division, round table, ethnic affiliate, state chapter or school library media affiliate will sponsor nearly all of the selected applicants. Each sponsor will contribute a minimum of $1,000 toward expenses of attending the ALA Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference ($500 for each conference). Sponsorship is not required for participation in the program. A list of sponsoring units is included as part of the online application. NAEP Project Seeking Applicants

NAEP, often referred to as The Nation's Report Card, tests 4th and 8th grade students at a sampling of American schools on odd numbered years - such as 2017. My purpose in contacting you is that our ideal applicants to do this testing are retired teachers and librarians. We need about 70 more people from across Michigan for this project. I attached some information on this project for your perusal. The usual questions asked are: Why retired teachers and librarians? Because we are most familiar with how schools work and have years of experience working with children. When does the testing take place? The testing window is for six weeks - beginning on the third Monday of January and ending on the first Friday of March. What does it pay? Pay is determined by the Federal government pay scale with Assessment Administrators paid an hourly wage, including travel time and mileage reimbursement, based on their county of residence. The exact amount is given at the time of making application. We need your assistance with this project. I presume that you might have more questions. Westat is recruiting for the 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress, also known as NAEP or The Nation's Report Card, for the National Center for Education Statistics, which is part of the U.S. Department of Education. The position involves conducting assessment sessions with 4th- and 8th-grade students using touch-enabled tablets in participating schools across the country. You will work on a team of 3-5 people. Library PayPal Accounts

One of the options we will have with a new circ system (Apollo) next month is to allow patrons to pay fines, etc. through PayPal. We would be interesting from hearing from libraries who offer this option. Some of our specific questions are: 1. Can or do you charge extra to cover the service fees from PayPal? 2. Is there a minimum amount you allow the patrons to charge? 3. How do you know what was paid for? Since we have not seen this, we are assuming that the patron's record is cleared when they okay the charge, but we will also need to know if an item was lost & paid for as well as which branch is bringing in the money. Proctoring Exams for Businesses

Hello everyone, I am wondering if there are any other libraries, besides us, that proctor exams for businesses? Several years ago, we started proctoring skill assessment exams for a local chemical company. As time has gone on, we've had increased problems with offering this service. If this is something your library offers, do you charge the businesses for your proctoring services? If so, how much? Also, if anyone has a policy concerning this topic, please send it to me, I'd like to see it. Animal Policies

We are realizing we might be in need of an official animal policy and wonder what other libraries have as part of their policy for animals (particularly service animals). It seems that under Michigan state law ( http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(nqmwg4pr2ildic24fhb2oyzd))/mileg.aspx?page…) we are allowed to ask if an animal is a service animal, and if the patron says yes we basically have to take them at their word. Could you send me your policies? We're also curious if any other libraries have had an attorney's involvement in drafting service animal policies.
