Makerspace Equipment Recommendations
by Sarah Marsack (Roseville Public Library) 08 Aug '25

08 Aug '25

Hello Everyone, Part of our library renovation will include adding a small makerspace and we are deciding which equipment we would like to start with. We already have a button maker, 3d printing pen, and a Cricut maker 3, heat press, hat press, and mug press but are hoping to get more for the makerspace. We were considering adding a 3d printer, laser cutter/engraver, and sewing machine and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for them. Was there any other equipment that you noticed is popular in your library makerspace and would recommend? Was there anything that you regret getting and would suggest avoiding? Please reply off list, I can compile a list of responses if anyone is interested. Thanks, Sarah Marsack Systems/Teen Librarian Roseville Public Library smarsack(a)roseville-mi.gov

They were created by WebJunction and the Idaho Commission for Libraries (ICfL) to replace and update the Alternative Basic Library Education (ABLE) courses created and maintained by ICFL for over 25 years. These courses are designed to introduce the learner to various aspects of the practice, values, and mission of library work, with special focus on small and medium sized public libraries. These courses do not, and cannot replace specific, detailed task and workflow training on the particular systems, policies, and procedures of individual libraries. Balancing the Books: Addressing Economic Insecurity Among Library Workers<https://www.librarieslearn.org/calendar/balancing-the-books-addressing-econ…> This panel discussion held last week discusses the economic insecurity facing library workers due to low wages, inadequate benefits, and unstable job conditions. The panel explores the scope and impact of economic insecurity among library staff, highlighting the unique financial challenges they encounter in comparison to other professions. Through personal stories, data, and expert insights, we will discuss how economic instability affects mental health, career advancement, and job performance. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to address economic insecurity in their institutions and actionable strategies for supporting financially vulnerable library workers. What's a BTBL Demo Site? We're glad you asked...
by Wambaugh, Stephanie (LEO) 08 Aug '25

08 Aug '25

The Braille and Talking Book Library (BTBL) offers accessible reading materials in audio and braille formats. Public Library Demo Sites are assigned one of our Digital Talking Book Machines to have on hand to show patrons that come into their branches. There are no circulating items or specific requirements for Demo Sites. We provide promotional materials like brochures, applications, posters, etc. Each Demo Site functions in whatever capacity helps their patrons the most. Here are some ways Demo Sites partner with us: * Outbound Services - some locations take our audio book player with them when they visit local nursing homes or perform home deliveries of materials. If a patron can't physically come to the library to get your materials, it's very possible they qualify for BTBL service. * Display Case - other locations choose to have our materials set out in a visible location in the library and promote it with our posters/flyers. A good place for these materials would be near your audiobook CD collection and/or your large print book collection. Patrons using items from these areas may qualify for our service. * Reference Desk -Many locations keep the player back behind the reference desk and only pull it out if someone asks about audio books or related services. As long as your staff knows the basics of who qualifies and what we have to offer, on-demand promotion works great! Learn more on our website at: www.michigan.gov/btbl<http://www.michigan.gov/btbl> Keep in mind I am happy to meet virtually for staff trainings or one-on-one discussions- please contact me directly with requests at wambaughs(a)michigan.gov<mailto:wambaughs@michigan.gov>. I can also get additional materials on the way if you are in need. Please feel free to reach out directly with any questions or requests. I hope you had a successful Summer Reading Program and can take a quick breather before you start planning for next year! Notary Inquiry Responses Compilation
by Director 07 Aug '25

07 Aug '25

Good afternoon, I compiled the responses to my question yesterday about notary services and why some libraries do not notarize real estate or estate documents such as trusts, wills, Power of Attorney, deeds, or closing documents. The document is attached below. I found the responses very helpful and hope others do too! Since I am a newer notary, it was really useful to hear from others with more experience and I will definitely be making use of their advice. Thank you to everyone who responded; I appreciate all of your help. Thank you, Kelsey Rutkowski *--------------------------------------* *Library Director* *Indian River Area Library* 3546 S Straits Hwy PO Box 160 Indian River, MI 49749 (231) 238-8581 indianriverlibrary.org
