In the library world today, there is a huge need for support organizations - friends and foundations - but often the lines between these two groups are blurred and their work counter-productive. In this webinar, presenters Peter Pearson and Sue Hall will discuss the difference in the roles of friends and foundations and identify areas where there can be conflict - and present strategies for minimizing conflict. They will also address the question "When is it time for the two organizations to merge?" and share solutions for engaging in a merger process that minimizes pain and maximizes potential. Hello Fellow Library Professionals, I am sit on the board of a community organization in Big Rapids called Festival of the Arts. This festival runs January 28th through the month of February and brings in artists from all over the county. This year as part of our kick-off event we want to encourage artists from around Michigan to show their art forms and give them the opportunity to sell their artwork if wanted. If you could please help me raise awareness of this opportunity for artists in Michigan it would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to post it on your social media platforms and place a flyer on your community boards I would be forever grateful! The Big Rapids Community is hoping to bring in hundreds of artists and we are hoping to give everyone the opportunity who wants to participate. Please help us spread the word! Much thanks! DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: · Provides programs for children and their families, including during the annual children’s summer reading program. Duties include, but are not limited to: planning, presenting, and evaluating programs; networking with community groups; tracking statistics; and preparing supporting materials. · Prepares, presents, and/or assists in weekly story times. · Staffs public services desks as operations require. · Maintain cleanliness and order of Early Literacy Center. · Promotes infant, early literacy, child, and adolescent learning and development in a balanced and comprehensive manner. · Creates bibliographies, user guides, promotional materials, and publicity spotlighting the Youth Services Department’s collections, services, and programs. · Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to adults and children, including face to face interactions and preparation of reading lists. · Creates displays to enhance the library experience and promote the use of library resources. · Contributes to social media platforms and the Early Literacy Newsletter. · Assists in maintaining and developing a collection of youth materials, both print and non-print, which includes selecting items for purchase and withdrawal under the direction of the Head of Youth Services. · Makes suggestions for equipment purchases and maintenance of the department. · Performs other related work as required or assigned by management. JOB REQUIREMENTS: · This job requires a Masters of Library and/or Information Science from an American Library Association accredited library school. · Successful experience working with children. · Professional experience working in public library preferred. · Working knowledge and understanding of basic library principles, procedures, technology, goals, and philosophy of service. · Ability to plan and implement library service goals and evaluate effectiveness of service to our patrons. · Demonstrated capacity to set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines. · Capability to enforce library policies and make sound judgment decisions when necessary. · Competence to read and understand information contained in memoranda, reports, bulletins, and other written forms. · Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact with various library staff and patron in an effective and courteous manner. Effectively communicate in both verbal and written form. · Aptitude to prepare presentations and speak in front of groups. · Capacity to identify networking opportunities and communicate with others in the profession, especially other children’s librarians. · Skill to do basic math without the aid of a calculator and more complex calculations with a calculator. · Capability to write and administer a budget effectively. · Knowledge of technology functions such as email, internet searching, printing, and basic word processing and spreadsheet software. · Willingness to maintain skills in above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate professional learning experiences. · Ability to operate a variety of library equipment including a telephone, computer, fax and copy machine, printer, calculator, cash register, audiovisual equipment, library automation systems, software programs, and other equipment as added or required. · Position requires some evening and weekend shift availability. Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words

Jackson District Library was pleased to host Larry Martin and guest Sigrid Burkhardt Howard who was born in Berlin, Germany in 1927. She was by her own words "brainwashed" into thinking Hitler was a god as a member of the Hitler Youth and believed everything he said. She was "de-Nazifide" after the war and later married an American soldier. The program drew a huge crowd and the audience was enthralled by the talk and !&A. On October 1, Larry invites Don Mericle, a United States Navy Gunner's Mate aboard the USS Cofer APD-62. He will talk about his assignment on the Destroyer escort; invasions; and rescues during his enlistment. Martin will also have a collection of World War II memorabilia on display. This presentation is free and open to the public. Mr. Martin has presented a 4-part series at Jackson District Library for the past 10 years bringing over 4,000 people to see and hear about personal experiences from Veterans who served in WWII and how the war had affected citizens from different walks of life. Hello. The Secretary of State's office now houses a tool that can help parents protect children and teens when they are on their electronic devices. We are hoping libraries will consider sharing the article below with your patrons via library websites and newsletters. Attached is the logo and a photo if you'd like to include them. Much thanks! Parents have new tool to protect children and teens With cell phones and the Internet, today's kids have an easy connection to the outside world. It's like a huge playground without a fence and that makes protecting kids so much harder. The reality of the digital world is that children and teens are regularly inundated with electronic advertisements promoting alcohol, tobacco, pornography and gambling. The companies behind these ads are increasingly using text messaging as their marketing strategy of choice, though they often don't know the age of the recipients. Thankfully, parents now have some help to stop these ads. The Michigan Child Protection Registry offered through the Michigan Secretary of State's office is a free service that blocks adult ads from reaching emails, mobile phones and Instant Messenger IDs belonging to children and teens. Similar to the federal Do Not Call List, the Michigan Child Protection Registry is a free do-not-contact service for Michigan residents. ICLR Meeting - International Collections

The International Collections Librarians' Roundtable (ICLR) will be meeting next month at the Caroline Kennedy Library in Dearborn Heights. The ICLR is a grass-roots, non-partisan group of Michigan librarians interested in developing international language, ESL, and literacy collections. At the meeting librarians will have the opportunity to network, discuss new programming efforts, evaluate vendors or materials and share resources. The meeting will be at the Caroline Kennedy Library on *Thursday, October 6* . * Lunch will be at the library at 12:00 pm*, with food from Al Ameer Restaurant, winner of the 2016 America's Classic award by the James Beard Foundation. The Boy Who Harnassed the Wind author William Kamkwamba to speak in Alpena 9/29

All things are made possible when your dreams are powered by your heart. William Kamkwamba. The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library has chosen William Kamkwamba’s The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind as this year’s Alpena Reads book. Tickets for William Kamkwamba’s Alpena Reads author talk are now on sale at the Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library. Tickets may also be purchased online at www.alpenalibrary.org or by calling 989-356-6188, ext. 10. Tickets are $10 each. William’s true-life story is amazing. In 2000, when he was thirteen years old, famine struck his home country of Malawi. His family went hungry and lost their livelihood when the crops failed. The following year he was forced to drop out of school because his family could no longer afford his tuition. Fearing a life of ignorance and poverty, the young teen turned to the tiny three-shelf library in his village in search of books he hoped would help him keep up with his friends. In these books, he found his dream: He would build a windmill that would produce power to light his home and irrigate his family’s crops. With insufficient English skills and no teacher, he taught himself the basics of physics and electrical engineering using diagrams in the books. At fourteen, against all odds, he built an electricity-generating windmill that eventually drew the attention of the world. Kamkwamba’s visit will be the culmination of a community-wide read of his book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, a non-fiction account of how famine and hardship in his home country of Malawi inspired Kamkwamba to build a windmill that changed his life and his community. Reading and writing are critical literacy skills for children to develop, especially in the elementary grades.
