Re: [Michlib-l] Outdoor Library Furniture.
by David Conklin 23 Jun '17

Here is a summary of the responses I received to my outdoor library furniture query: 1) We've had good luck with: http://www.thebenchfactory.com/recycled-plastic-benches/custom-inlay-memori… 2) I really like Landscape Forms furniture (www.landscapeforms.com) It is contemporary and fun; however, we do bring ours in for the winter. 3) If you're interested in poly furniture, we ordered a bench from this company 6 years ago and flower boxes 5 years ago. We can move both with relative ease, but we leave them out all year. There may be a little fading at this point, but otherwise they're still in excellent condition. The bench is quite comfortable (http://www.poly-lumber-furniture.com/polywood-vineyard-48-bench.html) 4) We purchased classic landscapeforms outdoor furniture<http://www.landscapeforms.com/en-US/product/Pages/Scarborough-Bench.aspx> 10 years ago. It was a bit pricey, yet still looks good today even though we leave the furniture out year round. On the downside, the furniture is very heavy and takes two people to move. The tables that we chose had a solid top which needs cleaning after it rains. Their new improved design<http://www.landscapeforms.com/en-US/product/Pages/Carousel-Seating.aspx> has holes on the table top which allow water and dirt to drain off the top. I can only assume that they do not look as dirty and do not need to be cleaned as often as our table tops. 5) We ordered the following chair, as well as a bench and table by the same manufacturer last July. They are very sturdy, yet can be moved fairly easily by the average adult. They endured the winter very well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HHT0BCO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?i… 6) I just moved to Michigan from Duluth, Minnesota. Many of the outdoor commercial spaces in Duluth have invested in Loll outdoor furniture. Loll is a great midwestern company. The furniture is extremely durable and comfortable, and since it is easy to move most places lock it down. It is pricey, but it will look like new for years. 7) I've been very happy with some purchases we made at Costco. Not a "library furniture" store, but good quality and an excellent return policy. 8) Library Design<http://www.librarydesign.com/> Dave David Conklin Director Genesee District Library (810) 230-3335 Office (810) 732-1161 Fax dconklin(a)thegdl.org Genesee District Library Headquarters 4195 W. I'm looking for advice/vender recommendations for outdoor library furniture. Ideally, this furniture would be durable enough to leave outside all year round, comfortable, and relatively easy to move around an outdoor patio. Please submit response directly to me and I will respond to this email with the results in the body of the email next week. [ALA News]<http://www.ala.org/news/> Rural, small, and tribal libraries invited to apply for college and career readiness project [IMLS]<http://www.ala.org/news/sites/ala.org.news/files/news/pressreleaseimages/im…> Tue, 06/13/2017 Contact: Anna Lam Communications Specialist Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) alam(a)ala.org<mailto:alam@ala.org> Rural, small, and tribal libraries can apply<http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/4089N7j82Odn6We6E> now through September 1, 2017 for the second cohort of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) and Association of Rural and Small Libraries<http://arsl.info/>’ (ARSL), “Future Ready with the Library: Connecting with Communities for College & Career Readiness Services<http://www.ala.org/yalsa/future-ready-library>” project. The project<http://www.ala.org/yalsa/future-ready-library>, now in its second year of implementation, is made possible through funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services<https://www.imls.gov/> and aims to create a customized learning program for and with library staff at rural, small, and tribal libraries to prepare middle schoolers with the 21st century skills needed to succeed in college and careers. The project also aims to help these libraries build and expand their capacity through community engagement and partnerships. For the second cohort, YALSA and ARSL will identify 30 successful applicants who will participate in a year-long experience that kicks off with a two-day orientation in Denver, CO, February 8-9, 2018. Cohort members will receive funding to travel to Denver and additional funds for their library to use to hire temporary staff to cover cohort members’ absence. For the remainder of 2018, cohort members will participate in online courses and discussions with the ultimate goal of planning, implementing and evaluating a college and career readiness (CCR) service for the middle schoolers in their community. As part of the project, cohort members will also receive two stipends: one to purchase CCR materials for their library and another to use towards a professional development activity, such as attendance at a state conference. Beyond the effort to provide support, resources and training directly to library staff, this project will also create an online community of practice as well as free, customizable resources for use by all libraries. To be eligible to participate, library staff must work at a library that satisfies at least one of the following requirements: * has a service area of 15,000 or less; * is more than 25 miles from an ‘urbanized area’ (as defined by the US Census); or * is established by an Indian nation or a public library on tribal lands Apply<http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/4089N7j82Odn6We6E> now through September 1, 2017. The mission of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) is to support library staff in alleviating the challenges teens face, and in putting all teens ‒ especially those with the greatest needs ‒ on the path to successful and fulfilling lives.
