Overdues procedures
by Deborah Haak 13 Sep '17

13 Sep '17

Greetings, We're wondering what process you use for handling patron accounts with overdue items. We recently discontinued our contract with a collections agency (we were pretty much breaking even) and we're bringing the process in-house. Looking for insight on the following questions. - What's your timeline for contacting patrons / blocking their account / charging them for the item? How many times do you contact a patron before/while/after you take action on their account? - What means do you use to contact the patron: mail, e-mail, phone call, text? - Is there a designated staff person who carries out these procedures, or are the tasks shared by staff? - Any tips on how to be compassionate and flexible while following policy? Any help you can give is appreciated! You can reply off-list and I'll compile responses to share. Deborah Haak

Health Literacy Month- Oct- ALA Toolkit and Webinar
by Steven Bowers 12 Sep '17

12 Sep '17

October is Health Literacy Month ALA’s Public Awareness Office has partnered with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) on a pilot program to create a Libraries Transform toolkit for showcasing the many ways libraries promote health literacy in their communities. The free toolkit, which is available here<http://www.ilovelibraries.org/librariestransform/health-literacy-toolkit-in…>, includes health literacy data, key messages and talking points sourced through NNLM, as well as nine “Because” statements that speak to some of the varied health literacy issues that libraries address. Each statement comes with downloadable graphics including posters, social media images and more. The toolkit also includes ideas for libraries to use these tools for promoting their own services and programming. NNLM is hosting a webinar on September 14<https://nnlm.gov/class/libraries-transform-health-literacy-toolkit/7708> for library advocates to learn more about the toolkit. Note: To view the full toolkit you will need to sign on to the Libraries Transform<http://www.ilovelibraries.org/librariestransform/get-involved> website. If you have questions about this effort and how you can participate, please contact Lindsey Simon at lsimon(a)ala.org<mailto:lsimon@ala.org>

Internal Revenue Tax Forms for 2017
by Cindi Place 12 Sep '17

12 Sep '17

Has anyone heard from the Internal Revenue Service re: placing orders for these forms? We had an issue last year and had to order forms late and I am trying to avoid that again this year. I thought we would get something from the IRS, but wasn't sure what or when. I went to the IRS website and there doesn't appear to be anything there re: ordering 2017 forms. I know the forms themselves will not be available until January, but hoped to get an order in now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Cindi L.
