Mabel White Holmes had the idea for "JIFFY" baking mixes. She wanted to save people time and money in the kitchen by including as many ingredients as possible in one box. In April 1930, "JIFFY" mixes were first shared with the public by the Chelsea Milling Company. The plant in Chelsea is the only factory that makes "JIFFY" products. Today, Mabel's grandson, Howard Samuel Holmes, runs the Chelsea Milling Company. <https://www.facebook.com/hsmichigan/> Interested in more historical trivia? Follow us on Facebook! Reminder: MeLCat Upgrade scheduled for Monday, 12/4 at 7AM
by Megan Dudek 01 Dec '17

01 Dec '17

Reminder: The MeLCat central server (elibrary.mel.org) is scheduled for a software upgrade on Monday, December 4, beginning at 7 AM. We expect the server to be down for several hours. While the catalog may re-appear and be searchable, placing requests and other functionality as outlined below may not be fully restored. A message will be sent to the lists once it is fully available again. MELCAT Implications 1. Users will be unable to place new MeLCat requests or directly search MeLCat (http://elibrary.mel.org.) Keyword searching will be available via MeL Discovery at http://search.mel.org, but MeLCat requests cannot be made, and the item status may not be current. 2. Users attempting to renew their MeLCat items may get a "server unavailable" message. 3. Library staff will be able to process requests & check out to patrons using DCB or your local Innovative/PolarisAPI system. Updates to the MeLCat central server from Innovative/PolarisAPI local servers and the DCB servers will sit in a queue until the central server comes back up. 4. All DCB data loading activities will continue as usual. MYMELCAT Implications 1. The MyMeLCat link will not work, but there are alternative methods to access their patron records and review their MeLCat requests: -- DCB libraries can use an alternative MyMeLCat link for their users: [DCB1] https://dcb1.mel.org/patroninfo [DCB2] https://dcb2.mel.org/patroninfo [DCB3] https://dcb3.mel.org/patroninfo -- Innovative local sites: MyMeLCat points to your local /patroninfo page. MEL DATABASE Implications 1. MeL Discovery at http://search.mel.org will be available for database searching, however the current status of MeLCat results will not be accurate and requests for materials cannot be made. 2. The MeL databases at http://mel.org/Databases will verify that patrons are in Michigan based on the IP address of their computer. -- If the IP isn't recognized as being in Michigan, patrons will not be able to remotely access the MeL Databases using their MeLCat login or driver's license information. Please let us know if you have any questions at melcathelp(a)mcls.org<mailto:melcathelp@mcls.org>. NATIONAL LIBRARY LEGISLATIVE DAY REGISTRATION OPENS TODAY
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 01 Dec '17

01 Dec '17

Hello! As many of you may know, I am succeeding Deb Biggs in the coordination of Michigan's involvement in the National Library Legislative Day. 2018 will be my first year as coordinator. I am very honored and excited to follow Deb, and more than aware of the amazing act I must follow! This year, 2018, National Library Legislative Day will be May 7 - 8, 2018. TODAY - Dec 1, 2017 is the first day of registration AND Hotel reservation for this year's NLLD Once again the hotel is the Liaison Hotel. If you are thinking of attending, I urge you to reserve a hotel room as soon as possible, as the hotel fills quickly Gale Cengage will once again be offering scholarships to facilitate the attendance of two people. As soon as I have the information on how to apply for these sponsorships, I will send it on. Please consider attending as this event provides unique opportunities for use to personally advocate with our Senators and Representatives in Congress. At this moment in our history, there cannot be enough representation in front of the lawmakers that make so many determinations that affect libraries. Determinations such as Funding, Net Neutrality and Open Access, to name only a few. Please review the information at the link below and consider joining myself and your fellow Michigan Librarians in Washington on May 7. http://www.ala.org/advocacy/advleg/nlld Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions! Henna Program
by Elissa Zimmer 30 Nov '17

30 Nov '17

Hi all, For those of you looking for a henna program, especially in the metro Detroit area, Fraser Public Library recently had Umadevi Ravishankar out. She had an informative PowerPoint presentation on the history of henna and how it is made naturally. She then did some basic designs on participants and brought them henna cones (both natural and synthetic to show the difference in color) for them to do their own designs! Elissa Zimmer Head of Programming & Youth Services Fraser Public Library 16330 E 14 Mile Rd, Fraser, MI 48026 (586) 293-2055 ext. 306 for Children's Desk ext. 309 for Elissa Voicemail ONLY www.calendarwiz.com/fraserpubliclibrary

Successful Program Round-up!
by Stanczak, Cindy 30 Nov '17

30 Nov '17

Hail, the Great Brain! It's been few years since I asked this, but I'm looking for responses to the any or all of the following questions: - What program worked beyond your expectations? - What continuing program still continues to blow away in program attendance and patron enthusiasm? - What new or single-time program completely blew you away in terms of the response from the public? - What new or single time program was okay successful at first and then the enthusiasm began to build and now people are asking for it again and again? Not every program is a great fit for every library, so please also give a sentence or so describing your library - urban/rural, small/medium/large (or service population size), and anything else you like. I'll happily put together a compilation. Cynthia Stanczak Library Director Albion District Library 501 S.
