Last week, MeL released a "Back to School" letter that can be shared with families, teachers, and even students. It explains that MeL is a great resource for K-12 students and to keep it in mind as a go-to this school year for class assignments. It also contains a 1-page chart that lists some of the K-12 databases with live links, and bullet points about each. Manoomin: Michigan's Native Grain Recipe Included! Have you ever heard of Manoomin? Few people outside the tribal communities have heard about a protein-packed wild grain that grows in Michigan, perhaps because it was more abundant 100 years ago than it is today. The Anishinaabek--Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi--know about wild rice, or Manoomin "the good berry," because it is central to their migration story. Manoomin is difficult to find today, as ricing lakes in Michigan are limited. However, the LaBine family, most of whom are members of the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa in the western U.P., has riced for generations and cooks with Manoomin on a regular basis. Below is one of the wild rice recipes the LaBine family still uses today--if you can get your hands on some wild rice, feel free to give this recipe a try! Wild Rice Fruit Salad - from Wayne LaBine, Sokaogon Band of Lake Superior Chippewa 1 pound wild rice 1/2 cup pure maple syrup 2 tablespoons maple sugar or brown sugar 1 pint fresh strawberries, quartered 1 pint fresh blueberries 1 pint fresh raspberries Directions: Rinse wild rice until water is clear. Soak wild rice in hot water, covered, overnight. Wild rice should be split and curled by morning. Add a cup or so of water to rice so you have enough to boil. Bring wild rice to a boil, shut off heat, cover. Let cool, drain off excess water. Mix maple syrup, maple sugar (or brown sugar), strawberries, and blueberries into the rice. Joseph Napier: A Hero Remembered Joseph NapierJoseph Napier, the U.S. Life-Saving Station keeper at St. Joseph, Michigan, earned the Life-Saving Service's first Gold Lifesaving Medal. In October 1877, the schooner D.G. Williams became stranded off the harbor in a storm. Capt. Napier and three volunteers rowed a boat out to the wreck. Their boat capsized and Napier was hurt, but he valiantly saved the schooner's crew. In 2016, the U.S. Coast Guard commissioned a fast response cutter named the USCGC Joseph Napier in honor of Napier's memory. Don't miss our next History Skills Workshop. House approves full federal funding of library programs

From: Don Wood <dwood(a)ala.org> Sent: Thursday, September 21, 2017 12:40 PM Subject: House approves full federal funding of library programs American Library Association (ALA) members have been working tirelessly to defend federal library funding since March, when the president announced his intention to eliminate Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)<http://www.districtdispatch.org/2017/05/stark-budget-cuts-library-funding/>. At this point in the decision-making process, it looks like our efforts are paying off. I am pleased to report that on September 14, the full House of Representatives voted as part of a large spending package (H.R. 3354<https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/3354>) not to make any cuts in federal funding for IMLS. This includes all funding for IMLS programs under the Library Services and Technology Act, and for the Department of Education’s Innovative Approaches to Literacy (IAL) program. Congratulations to everyone who has taken action to help #saveIMLS. Many of us called and emailed our members of Congress. Many of us retweeted action alerts issued by the ALA Washington Office at key stages in the campaign. Some of us wrote op-eds for local newspapers. Some coordinated with state librarians to identify the impact of IMLS funding on local libraries and even hosted congressional staffers at our libraries during the summer. Together we—ALA members and library advocates everywhere—are not only defending our nation’s libraries but are also showing that libraries are indispensable in our communities. We are most successful when we send clear, consistent messages at just the right times in the federal decision-making process. Thanks to the leadership and expertise of our staff in ALA’s Washington Office, we know exactly when our advocacy can be most effective. It’s not yet time to declare victory in the fight to #saveIMLS<https://twitter.com/hashtag/SaveIMLS?src=hash>. With last week’s vote, the House of Representatives has now finished its work on the FY2018 appropriations bills. ALA members may need to push hard to retain funding gains made in the Senate once the process of resolving differences with the House bill begins. free smart board

We have a SmartBoard that we purchased in 2000 that we no longer use up for grabs. We have not used it for a number of years. It's an SB 560 Pro with floor stand. It has a matte finish optimized for projectors and acts a a touch screen. Full disclosure: the last time I tried to use it there was a problem. The software I have is either not compatible with Windows 7 or there is a problem with the touch screen cable. It would not respond to touch screen setup. Goodbye from Ray Arnett

Dear Friends in the Library Community, I have accepted a call to pastor a small church in Anderson, South Carolina and recently resigned from the Fremont Area District Library effective October 20, 2017. My family and I will be moving to South Carolina that following week. Until that time, I will be at the Fremont library and may see some of you, however, I did want to express my general appreciation to my fellow library workers. I have enjoyed working with many of you over the past 16 years in Michigan libraries. It has been a very rewarding time with some challenges along the way.
