Reminder: tell the Congress to save net neutrality
by Steven Bowers 07 Dec '17

07 Dec '17

[Take Action For Libraries] Advocacy Alert: Net Neutrality We have one week to put pressure on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to delay their December 14th vote. As you know, ALA has two resolutions regarding net neutrality: the first affirms net neutrality<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/thru?ep=AAAAC2Flc0NpcGhlcjAxn80sKinGppz9fFY2O…> and the second reaffirms our support<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/thru?ep=AAAAC2Flc0NpcGhlcjAxEtVAbJ6H8GfbbdPeH…>. We are asking all library advocates to email or call their Members of Congress this week and ask them to support net neutrality protections. Libraries and our patrons cannot afford to be relegated to "slow lanes" on the internet. Send an Email<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/take-action?engagementId=418433&ep=AAAAC2Flc0…> What Happened: The day before Thanksgiving, FCC Chairman Pai publicly shared his plan to dismantle network neutrality protections approved by the FCC in 2015 and affirmed by the federal appeals court in 2016. The new draft order is scheduled to be voted on by the five FCC commissioners on December 14, 2017. What's New: This week, ALA signed on to a letter being circulated by other net neutrality allies, including the ACLU and Fight for the Future. The letter asks the members of the Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees the FCC, to support net neutrality rules and tell the FCC to stop its proposed plan to end them. ALA also supported a joint letter<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/thru?ep=AAAAC2Flc0NpcGhlcjAxHTg3pnjWhXZs_6hqn…> to the FCC that requests that the vote on December 14th be delayed. What You Can Do: Right now, the draft order already has been supported by a majority of FCC Commissioners, so it is almost certain to pass unless there is a meaningful intervention. Strong disapproval from members of Congress (especially from Republicans and those that serve on committees with oversight for the FCC) could force a pause in the December 14 vote to derail net neutrality. Make your voice heard now by emailing your member of Congress to support net neutrality protections. Send an Email<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/take-action?engagementId=418433&ep=AAAAC2Flc0…> Contact Us ALA Washington Office 1615 New Hampshire Ave NW, 1st Floor Washington, D.C. 20009-2520 Phone: 202-628-8410 • Toll Free: 1-800-941-8478 Subscribe Ready to take action? MeL Minute: updates to Gale Virtual Reference Library
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 07 Dec '17

07 Dec '17

Greetings and Salutations, This week's MeL Minute covers a variety of recent updates to Gale Virtual Reference Library<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-gale.php?database=GVRL>. GVRL contains encyclopedias and specialized reference sources for multidisciplinary research including the Study of Science--Earth Science, Geography and Geology c. 2017 and the Life & Career Skills Series--Employment, Personal Finance, Health & Wellnes and Social Skills, c.2015. Because each library creates its own eBook collection, the content you see may vary if you use the database at different libraries (your school, your public library, or your office). Enhanced book viewer - a new and improved cover-to-cover book viewer will replace the Flash-based viewer, increasing browser compatibility and supporting use of the book view on all mobile devices. Reading level indicators - the addition of three reading levels (Lexile, Guided Reading Levels/Fountas & Pinnell, and Accelerated Reader) allows users to more easily find content suitable to their reading level. Topic Finder - the addition of Topic Finder to Gale eBooks on GVRL helps users narrow their research and offers a visual way to explore their library's eBook collection. Other updates: * recommended articles - "More Like This" suggestions help users continue to find relevant content once they are in an article, supporting their exploration of the topic * improved search - updates to the search formula increase the relevancy of results and emphasize the most important elements, letting users quickly find what they need * updated MARC records - eBook MARC records will utilize direct linking, helping users get into a book more quickly from your library's catalog (currently they are taken to the "About this Publication" page; GVRL will now take them to the book's Table of Contents) Have a great rest of the week! Brought to you by Deb Renee Biggs and Sonya Schryer Norris, Library Consultants at the Library of Michigan MeL databases are available to Michigan residents or Michigan library access only.
