Hi, We are starting a local author collection at our library. The original thought was to put the books all in one area - but as we receive books I'm thinking it might be better to put the books in the area they belong (for example science fiction, poetry, children's books) with a local author sticker. For those of you who have local author collections, how do you shelve them? Thanks! Planning for CSLP’s Success! by Matt McLain [https://www.cslpreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/matt_mclain.jpg]The Board had its annual retreat last month in St. Louis where we put together the bones for our strategic plan for the next three years. We spent a lot of time going through our annual timeline, which was time well spent. It is a complex undertaking to keep track of all of the tasks that need to be completed. We discussed the order for each and the timing that needs to take place so that the manuals can be completed, printed, and distributed ahead of when everyone needs it. We discussed how that timing affects the manual writers and editors, vendors, and state reps. More immediately, we are working with Demco on a contract for 2019 so we can ensure we have quality promotional materials and prizes for CSLP member libraries. One new change that has already taken place is our move toward hiring the writers and editor for the teen and adult manuals directly with CSLP, rather than hiring them through Demco. The Spanish manual has always been produced directly through CSLP. We have much more to discuss beyond 2019, and we are excited about these changes that will lead to an even better CSLP. Thank you for your membership in CSLP. We value our members and our organization is stronger for your active engagement! CSLP is partnering with Scholastic! The first states that only had paper and DVD units shipped last week but those with USB units will begin shipping the week of October 16th. Several of you have contacted me regarding your meetings/state conferences and we are trying to honor those requests. If you need additional communications regarding the drop shipments, please let me know. The on-line manual is nearly ready to roll out. As soon as it is ready to access, a message will be sent to the State Reps mail list. State Reps: Remember that you will have several items to give to your libraries. Their manual (or manual access), the 2018 CSLP Incentive Catalog, and the 2018 Scholastic Book flyer/order form. If you have questions about any of these, please contact Luke or myself. 2018 On-Line Manual Instructions Instructions for the 2018 On-Line Manual access will be e-mailed to each CSLP State Representative in the next week or so. Once on the shopping page you will need to login to the shopping page with your Upstart/Demco/CSLP shopping login and password. This may differ from your CSLP login, depending on how you set it up before. Once on the shopping page you may either browse the website or you can click on the eCatalog. What does a pair of Barbie legs, a pillow, and over 200 cigarette butts have in common? They are all items that are no longer on the streets of Idaho Springs, CO! [https://www.cslpreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/IMG_0652.jpg]Dawning latex gloves, Sharon Bassist, Program Coordinator for the Clear Creek Library District, CO, helped lead groups of tiny volunteers around the areas surrounding the library and local schools. Children saw first hand how much trash gets thrown on the ground and made a pledge to pick up trash when they see it, even if it’s not theirs. Clean Drinking Water Taking inspiration from the book “Water Princess” by Susan Verde, Wendy Rowe, Children’s librarian at the Barrington Public Library, Barrington, NH, created this fantastic looking well pump from papier-mâché. [https://www.cslpreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/well1.jpg]“Water Princess” is a story of a young girl’s quest to bring clean drinking water to her African village. This well pump helped raise awareness of the importance of ensuring communities have access to clean water, and collected $66.10 in coins. All funds were donated to Water is Life, and organization that digs wells and provides water filtration straws to communities with no clean water sources. [https://www.cslpreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Luke_headshot.jpg]On the week of September 20th, I attended the Board’s annual retreat in St. Louis. This was my first opportunity to meet many of the board members in person, and it was a great experience. While there was some standing business to address, our main focus was on the drafting of a strategic plan. Often the strategic planning process, and the plans they generate, can cause a lot of librarian eyes to roll. This was not the case at the retreat. I was very impressed with the board’s firm commitment to CSLP and its mission to empower libraries to foster community. Details of the plan are still being developed, but I believe it provides CSLP a pathway to help further its mission and will make a positive impact on the libraries we serve. Stay tuned for details once the plan is polished into a more presentable format! September also brought the signing of the 2018 PSA and Summer Reading Champion agreements. With the theme of Libraries Rock! I am sure we can expect some lively PSAs. By the time you see the newsletter, the storyboards should be well underway. For high school student Danielle Heiert this meant building, and offering, over forty “little libraries” to community members in her hometown of Campbell County, Kentucky. Community members held a competition decorating the libraries Danielle constructed, and then installed them throughout the county. Danielle worked with her local public library to ensure the libraries were well stocked, and helped spread her love of reading to others! If there a young reader making a big difference in your state, please let us know! We would love to share these inspirational stories with the entire CSLP membership! MeL Minute: Health and Wellness Resource Center

With a recently released re-design, Health and Wellness Resource Center moves to the same platform as Gale's other popular digital resources, like Academic OneFile and Gale Virtual Reference Library, and now has the tools and features that customers expect from Gale databases, including a mobile-responsive design, Google/Microsoft integration, citation tools, Readspeaker, language translation, and more. The update also includes a new topic browse experience for the most popular and highly-searched health and wellness topics, featuring portal topic pages that organize results from different content types on one page, similar to Gale's In Context product line. While the look is new, HWRC delivers the same comprehensive, up-to-date content that customers have trusted for years. Now users can more easily search and work with HWRC's broad collection of full-text reference sources, including respected Gale medical encyclopedias; full-text articles from health-related journals, magazines, and newspapers; images; streaming video; and podcasts. All content from the alternative health module was already fully integrated into HWRC, so with this update, we've dropped the reference to the module from the title, and the product is now known simply as Health & Wellness Resource Center. The new homepage features four major topic groupings: Diseases and Conditions; Drugs; Diagnostics and Tests; and Therapies, Treatments, and Surgeries. The new release includes 50 updated Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine entries on popular topics. The position will lead a team to develop holistic communication strategies including the creation and maintenance of an intuitive online experience. The position utilizes both technical and content development talents to enhance users' online experience and communicate across multiple digital platforms. Major Duties - Develops web content strategy for all University Libraries departments. Serves as Manager for CMS website. Leads effort to coordinate website messaging across multiple platforms including Libraries CMS, LibGuides, social media, and other electronic outlets. Leads research, organization, and public relations efforts concerning the development and release of new websites. - Designs, tests, debugs and deploys websites. Maintains and updates website architecture and content. Ensures website architecture and content meets University standards. - Collaborates with University staff to define and document website requirements. The "Autism Welcome Here: Library Programs, Services and More" grant honors the work of Libraries and Autism: We're Connected cofounder Meg Kolaya for her contributions in promoting inclusion. Each year, a total of $5,000 will be awarded. All types of libraries in the US or Canada are encouraged to apply. Proposals can fund projects and services directed to any age group. Science Kits for Public Libraries Application Deadline: November 15, 2017 The IEEE Science Kits for Public Libraries Grant is offering up to $2,000 in funding to public libraries in the Michigan and Wisconsin area for the development of circulating math and science collections for pre-university students (K-12). The grant seeks to be a catalyst for educating students about how math and science are used for the benefit of humanity and to provide seed money for creation of library programs that will make a lasting impression. Past grants have allowed several Midwestern libraries to develop science kit circulating collections and give students access to prepared experiments and science materials that they might not encounter in the traditional classroom. Additionally, these libraries have created educational programs that allow students to conduct experiments at the library with the guidance of a librarian. This is a program of IEEE-Region 4 (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Greetings Michigan Library Community, The Library of Michigan publishes a bimonthly newsletter called the LM Dispatch. We reach a lot library workers, but we also reach many citizens who are interested in Michigan libraries. In addition we have good inroads with media outlets who have reporters or editors signed up to receive the newsletter. A survey of readers found that library success stories were highly valued and we aim to include multiple writers from the field speaking directly to their current activities in every issue. You are invited to be both a reader of, and a writer for, the LM Dispatch. Do you have an innovative program or approach that you think other libraries could benefit from hearing about? I want to hear from you! Are you engaged in a community partnership or outreach effort that is working? I want to hear about it! Do you touch your patron's lives in ways that are unique for your area or your library size? I'm interested! Keep us in mind as you have successes at the local level. Other libraries are interested and we can help get the word out. Our subscriber list is double that of Michlib-l. A typical issue of the Dispatch is made up of 8-10 short articles. Articles should be a minimum of 300 and maximum of 400 words.
