Badge Printer
by Gina Horn 29 Nov '18

29 Nov '18

I have been looking into a badge printer for the purpose of printing library cards as well as staff badges. The things I like are: 1. Design changes are easy 2. It takes 12 seconds to print a library card 3. We can put a patron's picture on their library card (if we choose to) and they can use it as another form of ID 4. Library cards will cost approximately what we are paying currently What I would like to know is do any of you have badge printers at your library? Do you like it or not? Do you use it for printing library cards as well? Pro's and Con's? Thoughts and Suggestions? I appreciate your input! Thank you! Sincerely, Gina Horn Executive Assistant Branch District Library 10 E. Hello fellow Librarians, Our Friends group is looking for a comedian or comedy show they can bring to Elk Rapids next summer. Does anyone have any recommendations for someone funny, non-controversial (we've had plenty of that!) and reasonably priced? Thank you! Shop Small at Your Library - How did it go?
by Ceci Marlow 29 Nov '18

29 Nov '18

Hello all - We had a really successful Shop Small experience in Hartland led by the Cromaine Library. It included a Pop-up Market. We'd love to know if any other libraries got on this bandwagon as part of a community's Shop Small effort and especially if there were any other Pop-up Markets. What did you do? What did you learn? What would you do differently? Our Community Relations Manager partnered (as she did last year, when she led the effort as an employee for an area firm) with our high school's DECA group to fill the giveaway Shop Small bags. We had over 30 partners for that, giving away everything from free appetizers to $1 off coupons to "stuff." We were given 75 bags by American Express for the event. (The prior year, she had received 200, and while we might not have given away that many - we could have given away another 75.) Nearly 400 people came through the door. If you purchased something from one of our vendors, which included several nonprofit community partners (offering the Senior Center cookbook, Garden Club memberships, community theater season tickets at a discount), you received a ticket for a drawing for a very nice $95 value gift card package, most of which was donated. Our small group of vendors (6 commercial and 8 nonprofits) made 208 sales! We're planning to do this again, expanding it, and, this time, charging a sales-based percentage booth fee that will go to the charity project in which our community will engage at the Library in a month following the event. Please let me know off list at cmarlow(a)cromaine.org what you learned, if you got involved in Shop Small in your community. Thanks ceci -- Cecilia Ann Marlow Library Director Hartland's Cromaine Library 810-632-5200, ext. 105 www.cromaine.org

Librarian Jenni Gordon reports that this past summer a well-timed opportunity came to the Peoria Public Library<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flibrary.peo…> - Main Branch, Peoria, AZ. The group PHX Hidden Rocks booked one of the library meeting rooms to host a day of Rock Painting. While attendees had a wonderful time, the program did not go on without a hitch. [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/images/3e7f5654-4e7…] Usually, you paint the rocks, let them dry, then you apply Mod Podge to keep the paint on, then let it dry again. PHX Hidden Rocks uses hairdryers to speed up the process. Patrons had three hairdryers in use, when suddenly they all stopped. They had blown a fuse in their Activity room! Thankfully, the Activity Room had outlets that run on two different circuits, so they were able to continue to use two hairdryers to the back of the room. However, before Maintenance could come reset the breaker, their weekly sewing program needed to use the room. Jenni had to explain to the group that only half the outlets worked because they had “blown a fuse blow-drying rocks” – now there is a sentence you do not get to say every day!
