Playaways
by Hartford Public Library 08 Mar '19

Dear Colleagues, We are considering Playaways for our collection. I am inquiring about your experience with this format. Are they popular with adults, children or teens? What is their longevity? What is most popular classic fiction or best sellers? They seem to be very expensive. I appreciate your input. Regards,Stephanie DanielsDirectorHartford Public Library

compiled cultural competency recommendations
by Kristy Cooper 08 Mar '19

08 Mar '19

Hi everyone, A few weeks back I asked the list for cultural competency training recommendations, either online or in person. and have compiled all of the responses I received for everyone here: · Try Marla Ehlers, Assistant Director, of Grand Rapids Public Library. She did something like this for MLA several years ago. Here is a presentation by her here: https://mostatelibrary.watch.more.net/#/videos/c41237bd-7aa0-49cd-9cfb-4c42… · Taryn Petryk *tpetryk(a)umich.edu <tpetryk(a)umich.edu>* (Michigan Ross Director of Diversity and Inclusion) · I recently took Balancing Books and Social Issues: Homelessness and Trauma put on by Elissa Hardy, a social worker in the Denver Public Library system, and while the webinar specifically talked about people experiencing homelessness, she also did a great job talking about the language we use about patrons and how harmful it can be. I highly recommend it. https://infopeople.org/civicrm/event/info?id=818&reset=1 · https://amplifycolectivo.com/nonprofit-small-business-and-corporate-trainin… · *http://us2consulting.com/ <https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fus2consulting.com%2F%3Ffbclid%3…>* · WebJunction offerings are free. A list available that are self-paced courses that match your need can be found here: https://learn.webjunction.org/course/search.php?search=cultural · Here is a link to a post about inclusive practices with connections to other resources. https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/stories-of-inclusion-inclusive… · Here are a number under their topic of Access & Equity https://www.webjunction.org/explore-topics/access-equity.html · If you are looking for training for library staff serving children and youth you may want to review YALSA's offerings such as http://www.ala.org/yalsa/cultural-competence-library Thanks! -- Kristy Cooper

Filtering Software
by Sharon Crotser-Toy 08 Mar '19

08 Mar '19

Happy Friday, everyone! We are embarking on e-rate funding which, of course, requires some type of filtering/blocking mechanism on all of our computers, something we don't currently provide. I'm interested to hear about anyone's experiences with filtering/blocking software: Is there anything you'd recommend; pro's and con's, etc. I very much appreciate your time; I know it is in great demand! Thanks so much for any help you can provide. -Sharon -- Sharon Crotser-Toy Director *Watervliet District Library* 333 N. looking for competent printing company for card sleeves
by Lisa Waskin 07 Mar '19

07 Mar '19

We recently had a very unsatisfactory exchange with our long time printing company, Manter Mark, which despite our efforts to reach an amicable compromise, resulted in the owner being condescending, insulting, and just plain rude. I was not going to make this public knowledge, but his continued and increasingly rude voicemails and emails have led me to caution others against using this company. It is a shame, because until now, we were perfectly happy with their service and product. It is disturbing that the first time we expressed any dissatisfaction with their product led to this point. If any of you have a company that you use to print your card sleeves other than Manter Mark, that you would highly recommend, please share this information with me. Thank you, Lisa Lisa Waskin, Director Superior District Library 541 Library Drive Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783 Ph.
