Baby Changing question
by Reed, Nyama 28 May '19

28 May '19

Good Morning Kat, Could you put in an actual changing table in the corner of the children's area. At least then it is designated and the germs will be there, not on the regular furniture. It could be wiped down every night, just as our bathroom changing tables are cleaned every day. Sincerely, Nyama Nyama Y. We have older bathrooms that don't have a baby changing station in them and are not in a place to change that anytime soon. We do have a counter that people can use (which I realize is not ideal). People have been changing their babies on our couches and on the floor in our Children's Department. I've been telling the people doing this that they need to use either the bathrooms, or some other option instead of the Children's Department furniture and floor. I hate to be inhospitable to families, but I am concerned about the safety and biohazard with a little one being changed out in the open of our department. Are you shopping for a new website?

Greetings, Are you shopping for a new website? Did you know that the Library of Michigan subsidizes a website template and hosting solution called Ploud with federal LSTA dollars? It's best suited for small and rural libraries but we have several Class 5 & 6 participants. The product scales according to your needs. * Cost to the libraries is $206 a year o Includes a choice of four templates with a variety of color schemes, hosting, and help desk provided by vendor Enfold Systems o Includes orientation webinars and in-person, regional, hands-on training with Library of Michigan and experienced program staff * Visit the program homepage at: https://michlibrary.org and watch one or more of the videos there to get an idea of how it works. o The program homepage also has a list of all the participants. Want to see a few examples in a variety of library sizes? Check out: * Buchanan District Library<https://www.buchananlibrary.org/> * Cadillac Wexford Public Library<https://www.cadillaclibrary.org/> * Dorothy Hull Library<https://windsor-township.ploud.net/> * Bayliss Public Library<https://bayliss.ploud.net/> * You can also call Sonya Norris at LM at 517-335-1498 or email her at mailto:norriss2@michigan.gov to screen share and get a tour under the hood. * Now is the perfect time to join. You'd have the summer to get situated with your template and take advantage of the two orientation webinars offered by Sonya and then register for an all-day fall training class. Ploud serves 1/4 of all the libraries in the state and about half of the small and rurals in the lower peninsula. We'd love to have you on board, too! #IMLSGrant Sonya Schryer Norris Library Consultant Library of Michigan Michigan Department of Education 517-335-1498 Norriss2(a)michigan.gov<mailto:Norriss2@michigan.gov> https://michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan https://mel.org http://michlibrary.org<http://michlibrary.org/>

Information request from author

Hello - please see the message from a writer looking for information about a rare Michigan state government document and libraries that may have held it. If you have any information to pass along, please respond to the email link in the text below and copy me, Bernadette Bartlett<mailto:bartlettb@michigan.gov> as well. Thank you! Dear Librarians of Michigan: My name is Kendra Greene<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fartandsee…>, and I'm an essayist researching a book about the dangerous things we keep in collections because it would be more dangerous to forget, deny, censure, or destroy them. I've taken a special interest in the 1874 book of arsenical wallpapers Shadows From the Walls of Death: Being Arsenical Wallpapers, Gathered by R. C. Kenzie, Member of State Board of Health. This book of two pages of text and 86 leaves of arsenical wallpapers was made in an edition of 100 and sent to the "leading libraries of the state." I've been able to locate 4 extant copies (at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan State University in Lansing, and the old Department of Public Health copy now at the Michigan History Center) and a pamphlet version of the text (at Harvard's Countway Medical Library). If you can help me (1) locate another copy of the book, or (2) identify Michigan libraries that even existed in 1874, please let me know. With appreciation, A. Kendra Greene Bernadette M. November is National Runaway Prevention Month and Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
by Mary Jo Vortkamp 24 May '19

24 May '19

Hi Michigan Team, As we're planning for fall, please keep in mind that November is National Runaway Prevention Month and Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. Though most organizations don't have their 2019 information up, much of the info from last year is still available. November is National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM), a public awareness campaign designed to “Shine a Light” on the experiences of runaway and homeless youth that too often remain invisible. It is also an opportunity to spotlight the resources available to support youth in crisis throughout the nation. As part of the campaign, individuals, organizations and communities across the nation are encouraged to work together to prevent youth homelessness. National Runaway Prevention Month is spearheaded each year by the National Runaway Safeline (NRS), a national nonprofit organization committed to ensuring that runaway, homeless and at-risk youth are safe and off the streets, with the support of the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB). The goals of NRPM: To raise awareness of the runaway and homeless youth crisis and the issues that these young people face To educate the public about solutions and the role they can play in ending youth homelessness If you are interested in becoming a partner, please fill out this form. Reach out to Rachel Reynolds, Outreach & Prevention Specialist at rreynolds(a)1800RUNAWAY.org with any questions. Hello, I'd be interested to hear from libraries who regularly rotate books between branch locations. How often do you move books? Do you observe a positive effect on circulation? How do you decide what moves where? Any insight, tips, pros or cons appreciated! Thank you, -- Barbara Gordon, MLS Director Cass District Library 319 M-62 Cassopolis, MI 49031 269-357-7822 ext. 101
