Looking for Presenters - crime solving and cooking
by Shayna Houghton 30 May '19

30 May '19

Hi everyone, I'm looking for presenter recommendations on two very different topics. These would both be for adult audiences. First, does anyone have recommendations for someone to talk about detective work or investigation? Something in the realm of solving crimes or more general experiences of being a detective? Second, I'd love to find someone who does cooking demos. Any suggestions? I'm looking particularly for Mexican cuisine. Please respond off list to houghton(a)btpl.org<mailto:houghton@btpl.org>. Thank you so much! Shayna Shayna Houghton Adult Services Librarian Bloomfield Township Public Library 1099 Lone Pine Road Bloomfield Twp., MI 48302 248-642-5800 ext. 118

Past articles are available on the Resource List section of the Libraries and Summer Food Guide. A Summer Partnership That Feeds Minds & Bodies by Aaron Williams, Adult & Digital Services Librarian, McCracken County Public Library The McCracken County Public Library’s mission is to empower everyone to discover, grow, learn, and play through our programs, services, and resources. We strive to enrich our community by providing innovative programs, a diverse materials collection, access to technology, and exceptional customer service to our patrons. Among the library’s strategic initiatives are community engagement and learning and discovery. Through community engagement, we seek to connect with our patrons through outreach, partnerships, and collaboration. One such partnership is with a local area school system’s summer nutrition service. [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/images/2503452a-45a…] The Paducah Independent School System operates within the city limits of Paducah, Kentucky, the county seat of McCracken County. The school district has been participating in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s summer feeding program for approximately four to five years. The school system offers its students 23 feeding sites, many of which are mobile and brought to students at different locations around Paducah neighborhoods via bus or van. In an interview with the Paducah Sun newspaper, Paducah Independent Schools Director of Food and Nutrition Services Lynsi Barnhill told reporters the school served over 36,000 meals in the summer of 2017. For the last two summers, McCracken County Public Library staff have followed the Paducah Public School system’s vans to mobile sites to distribute free books and summer reading logs along with the school’s free lunches. This partnership allows the school system and the library to work together to feed students’ bodies and minds during the summer months when school is not in session. Library workers from both the Youth Services and the Adult Services staff volunteered to make the program a success. The library donated over 1500 books to Paducah Independent School System students this year alone. The success of this partnership demonstrates that while libraries can serve as USDA food services sites, they can also partner with existing service sites in their community to bring books and summer learning programs to children who might not otherwise be able to reach the library during the summer months. By partnering with the Paducah Public School system’s food nutrition service to meet these children where they are, the library is also able to accomplish its strategic initiative of learning and discovery, even for those who lack access to the library’s physical location. Inclusion Corner-Reach beyond the Stars: Using StarNet Activities in an Inclusive Way By Lisa Hellman Wolfner Talking Book and Braille Library Lisa.Hellman(a)sos.mo.gov<mailto:Lisa.Hellman@sos.mo.gov> This year CSLP collaborated with StarNet<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fclearingho…> to provide amazing space-related activities for libraries to try. Many of the activities are inclusive as is, while others only need slight modifications to work for special populations. Here are just a few activities you can try at your library. Balloon Rockets<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fclearingho…> This program is very simple, but if you have children with a latex allergy, you will need latex-free balloons. When doing this program with blind or visually impaired kids, there are several options. Before you begin, if you have a variety of colored balloons, let them choose. Every child, regardless of disability, will likely have a favorite color. Some may want to blow up their balloon, while others may want to only let it go. You will likely need to tape the balloon onto the straw, but you can give the child a choice of how they want it taped. Also ask them in what direction they want to be from the “planet” (aka the person holding the other end of the string). They may want to be above, straight across, below, or any other direction from the “planet.” In the end it’s all about having fun (and seeing if your rocket makes it or flies off into space)! Binary Bead Craft: Bracelet or Necklace<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fclearingho…> Learning about binary code can be fun, fashionable, and accessible! To make this one accessible, try providing a variety of textured or sizes of beads. It is harder for children with visual impairments to feel the different patterns if all the beads are the same size and texture. Having different textures or sizes can also help those who can see determine differences in the code better. Note: There is a pin option, but it would be recommended for tweens or teens. Mars Rovers<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fclearingho…> The Mars Rovers activity is great for many types of disabilities. You may need to do some modifications to the set up or the instructions in order to make it more accessible. If you have someone who is blind and is “Mission Control” try using tactile directions to help them help their “Rover” counterpart navigate. This can done with magnets, puff paint, or even pins in a corkboard. If your “Rover” is in a wheel chair, but can use his or her arms and hands easily, try giving them a grabber tool to help them pick up the item. Having a grabber can be fun for any child to use who is playing the “Rover.” Reminder: Apollo 11 Moon Landing Celebration Join us on July 15th for a live webcast of a guided recreation of Apollo 11’s journey to see how this mission was executed by crew members and mission control in Houston.
