Starting in 2020 libraries can: * Use CSLP artwork and slogans on any paper good including; bookmarks, posters, reading certificates, newsletters, press releases, and activity sheets. If it is printed on paper, you can create it! * Use CSLP artwork as long as you like! Member libraries no longer have to worry about pulling images from their websites after the program year. All CSLP artwork created after 2017 can be used indefinitely! * Use CSLP artwork and slogans on any "one-of-a-kind" item. Paint the slogan on the library's windows? Yes! Create a quilt based on the artwork? Yes! Use your topiary skills and transform the library's hedge into one of the characters from a CSLP poster? Absolutely, and please send photos! * The revised Rules of Use can be found here: https://www.cslpreads.org/membership-information/rules-of-use/ A reminder from Cathy Lancaster to Michigan Libraries: you cannot combine copyrighted CSLP artwork to your own graphics, art, special designed t-shirts, etc. Please see above link for specific Rules of Use, for example, you cannot use the "A Universe of Stories" slogan artwork with your own graphics. Please be advised you must seek official CSLP approval for any exceptions. Hurry, before you miss this: Come learn about Conversation Cafe!
by Jan Davidson 18 Jul '19

18 Jul '19

Community Engagement is becoming increasingly important as libraries look to remain relevant in changing times. Whether big or small, rural or urban, libraries have become centers for dialogue on important issues, and are often seen as neutral, safe spaces for community members to share their voice. Conversation Cafés<http://www.conversationcafe.org/> are open, hosted conversations where people gather to make sense of our world. At a Conversation Café there is nothing to join, no homework, no agenda; just a simple process that helps to shift us from small talk to BIG talk, conversations that matter. With training, libraries can run this kind of dialogue using minimal resources, which makes it ideal for libraries of all sizes. This workshop will be led by facilitators from the National Coalition for Dialogue & Deliberation (NCDD)<http://ncdd.org/>, a network of more than 700 innovators who bring people together across divides to discuss, decide, and take action together effectively on today's toughest issues, and the steward of Conversation Café. Brought to you by MCLS<https://www.mcls.org>, and heavily subsidized by Library of Michigan<https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/>, all interested staff from Michigan libraries can participate in a cohort at one of three locations around the state for just $40, including lunch! After a day of hands-on learning, online support and coaching will be available to assist you in implementing what you've learned. We hope you'll take advantage of this incredible, affordable opportunity. You can read more and register here<http://www.mcls.org/training-events/events/conversation-cafe/>, but hurry! These trainings are coming up fast, in early August, and registration will be full soon! ********************** Jan Davidson Project Manager Engagement, Consulting, and Training Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS) 517-492-3811 / toll-free 800-530-9019 x111 davidsonj(a)mcls.org<mailto:davidsonj@mcls.org> [facebook]<https://www.facebook.com/mcls.org> [twitter] <https://twitter.com/mclsorg> [square-logo-1 (002)] <http://www.mcls.org/>

NEWS RELEASE: Historical Society of Michigan Moves to New Building, Triples Education Space With Help From The Meijer Foundation
by Historical Society of Michigan 18 Jul '19

18 Jul '19

Historical Society of Michigan 7435 Westshire Drive Lansing, MI 48917 Contact: Nancy Feldbush (517) 324-1828 <mailto:hsm@hsmichigan.org> hsm(a)hsmichigan.org For Immediate Release Historical Society of Michigan Moves to New Building, Triples Education Space With Help From The Meijer Foundation LANSING, Mich.-The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) has moved to a larger headquarters in the greater Lansing area at 7435 Westshire Drive, located near the intersection of I-96 and M-43. The move from HSM's previous location in southern Lansing occurred in mid-July. The new building has nearly 12,000 square feet of space and, with some minor modifications, will offer three education spaces-all with remote learning capabilities-tripling the amount of education opportunities from the old building. The move to the new building and the future improvements to the education spaces were made possible by a major gift from The Meijer Foundation and contributions made by HSM members and friends to the Society's previous building's mortgage-reduction campaign. A longtime supporter of HSM, The Meijer Foundation has been a committed ally in the Society's educational efforts to share the history and heritage of all Michigan's peoples. "Our staff and Board of Trustees are excited about how this move will help us advance our mission of history education," said Executive Director and CEO Larry J. Wagenaar, who leads the 191-year-old nonprofit and nongovernmental organization. "This move gives us significantly more public meeting space in order to deliver expanded programs and services about Michigan's rich and fascinating history, as well as provides for the next steps of the Society's continued growth and impact." HSM's programs, which will be enhanced and expanded because of the move, include its two history magazines, Michigan History and Chronicle; three annual history conferences; the yearlong Michigan History DayR program for students; History Skills WorkshopsT; History HoundsT Lecture Series; Michiganders on the RoadT motor coach history tours; the Michigan History MomentT radio program; the Michigan History AllianceT networking program across the state; and more. "For the first time, we will have the ability to hold simultaneous history education programs in our building," Wagenaar said. "We also plan to add technology to allow easy remote access to even more of this programming so people anywhere in the state-and beyond-can fully participate." In addition, the new location offers more room for staff, small meeting spaces, more storage and an expanded area for HSM's library of Michigan history books. The building is closer to the freeway for easy access and to major hotels and restaurants for visitors to use. The Historical Society of Michigan, publisher of Michigan History and Chronicle magazines, is the state's oldest cultural organization, founded in 1828 by territorial governor Lewis Cass and explorer Henry Schoolcraft. A nongovernmental nonprofit, the Society focuses on publications, conferences, education, awards and recognition programming, and support for local history organizations to preserve and promote Michigan's rich history. # # # This e-mail is sent to our members and friends to keep you updated on historical activities and opportunities to learn more about our state's history. To opt-out, please respond to this e-mail with "remove" in the subject line. If you received this e-mail as part of your participation in the Michlib-l mailing list (listserv), please follow their removal process.

Hoopla demand and checkout settings
by Alexis Tharp 18 Jul '19

18 Jul '19

Hi everyone, We're looking to increase our Hoopla usage, as well as adjust our checkout settings and budget caps to meet demand. If your library uses Hoopla, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could answer the following questions: 1. What is your monthly checkout limit per patron on Hoopla? 2. Do you limit available items by price? For example, excluding items from the catalog that cost more than $3.99 per checkout, etc. 3. How do you typically handle increased demand for Hoopla? For example, from time to time we've had to increase the month's Hoopla budget in response to patrons hitting the daily spending limit, a problem that tends to snowball once it starts. Thanks in advance for any feedback! Please reply off-list; I'll be happy to compile responses for the group if anyone's interested. Best, Alexis Tharp pronouns: she/her/hers Reference Librarian William P. Faust Public Library of Westland www.westlandlibrary.org 734-326-6123
