Join us at the 2019 Poetry Out Loud State Finals

Greetings from Lansing -- The Michigan Humanities Council (MHC) invites you to the Poetry Out Loud State Finals on March 1 and 2 at the Lansing Crowne Plaza. As you may know, Poetry Out Loud<https://www.michiganhumanities.org/poetry-out-loud/> is a national high school poetry recitation contest that MHC coordinates through a partnership with the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional support is generously provided by Meijer and the Liesel Litzenburger Meijer Fund. I’ve attached a flyer that shares some additional details about the program and our 2019 schedule, including the timeframes for each round of competition. You can also find updates on our POL Facebook page<https://www.facebook.com/MichiganPoetryOutLoud/>. This year marks our fourteenth State Finals competition, and we’re anxiously awaiting two days of talented, courageous students taking the stage to recite known works of poetry for their peers, families, teachers, and a panel of judges. If you are available on the afternoon of Friday, March 1, or morning of Saturday, March 2, please consider joining us for the rounds of competition, which are open to the public. Longevity Pay

I would like know if your library provides any type of longevity pay for staff. If you provide longevity pay what is based on? A specific number of years of service? Meeting room policy

Hello everyone, I need your help! We have meeting rooms that are available for use by community groups. It took the library board over a year of reviewing and revising a policy that fit our library and community. Now I’m wondering if it isn’t time to re-evaluate our policy one more time. I’m interested in knowing if any library has a policy that limits the number of times a community group can reserve a meeting space. We have one particular group who wants to reserve a room 6 times each week. While I’m all about our community using our meeting rooms, it is a little unfair that one particular group monopolize the rooms. I’m interested to learn what others are doing to deal with this issue. Weeding

Good afternoon, everyone. I have a question about weeding. It isn't a task I am tackling or looking to tackle soon. It has been in the back of my mind for a while; and I want to be prepared and have a plan. My library is very small; and my shelves are full of books, the vast majority of which are 2015 and newer. My collection is only about 2 years old. Normally, I would use the usual criteria (lack of use; poor physical condition; glut, etc.); but I am unsure about using them, given the age of the collection. If you were, or have been, in my shoes, what criteria would you use for selecting books for weeding out of this young collection when the time comes?
