MeL Minute: LearningExpress Library - Help Your Patrons' Dreams Come True
by Breed, Liz (MDE) 24 Jul '19

24 Jul '19

[A close up of a sign Description automatically generated] LearningExpress Library<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=lex> can help you make your patrons’ dreams come true. It happened recently at the Monroe County Library System. One of our young patrons aspired to follow in his father’s footsteps to become a United States Marine. He had the heart and determination of a warrior but struggled academically. He was anxious about the written portion of the military entrance exam -- until he was introduced to LearningExpress Library.   Extensive resources are available through LearningExpress Library for those interested in military service. These resources include practice ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) tests and eBooks. The practice ASVAB tests cover a wide variety of topics including: assembling objects, arithmetic reasoning, paragraph comprehension, spatial relations, and mechanical aptitude. Every effort is made to replicate the test environment including exams with a built-in timer. Instant scoring identifies areas of strength and weakness. Detailed explanations of the correct answers are also provided for individuals interested in improving their test scores.   Currently, four eBooks specific to the ASVAB can be found in LearningExpress Library. They outline what to expect when taking the entrance exam and provide targeted lessons to build the skills needed to make enlistment a reality. Useful information on study techniques and expert strategies for controlling test anxiety can also be found. Having the books available in electronic format is very convenient for a generation that has grown up with mobile technology and has become accustomed to instant portable access.   Through hard work and determination, and with a little help from LearningExpress Library, the young man mentioned earlier is now serving as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marines. There are many ways libraries can help patrons turn their dreams into reality, and LearningExpress Library is one. This Guest MeL Minute brought to you by Barbra Krueger of the Monroe County Library System. Supporting Michigan Libraries by Putting You First. Art display materials
by Denise Harris-Fiems 23 Jul '19

23 Jul '19

The Friends of the White Lake Township Library are sponsoring an art competition this fall to celebrate the opening of our new building. However, we are concerned about how to hang and display the art. Does anyone have dividers or other temporary racks or a system we could borrow or rent to display the art? We don't know what all may come in, but do have limits on size and weight. Thank you for any suggestions or help you can provide. -- *Denise Harris-Fiems* *Reference Librarian* *White Lake Township Library* *11005 Elizabeth Lake Road* *White Lake, MI 48386* *248-698-4942, ext. 4*

Cirque Amongus: program recommendation
by Colleen Leddy 23 Jul '19

23 Jul '19

We've had Cirque Amongus visit several times over the past dozen years and they never fail to provide an excellent program. This is true of their performance format and their workshop format which entails 10 circus acts that kids get to try out. It's the quintessential hands-on (heck, body-on!) experience. The staff is professional, engaging, and easy to work with. They show up with lots of great equipment (even a trapeze!) and the kids have a blast! If yours is a small library like mine, consider asking your school to allow you to use their gym...that's where we scheduled them last week. Adult volunteers are needed to run the stations with the help of the Cirque Amongus crew, but it's totally worth the time it might take to round them up. http://cirqueamongus.com/ Thanks, Colleen Colleen Leddy, Director Stair District Library 228 W. Main St. Morenci, MI 49256 517/458-6510 Monday & Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
