Library Lovers Day video
by Klaudia Janek 18 Feb '20

18 Feb '20

The Elders of the Internet are losing humans to libraries! Can the Wizard of the World Wide Web (aka @nick_offerman) regain control? See why public, school, academic and special libraries are more important than ever before. #LibraryLoversDay <https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/libraryloversday?source=feed_text&epa=HASH…> https://youtu.be/r7IESxDtn8Y <https://youtu.be/r7IESxDtn8Y?fbclid=IwAR2QOKBsjsXEaLghBRk_NSiTWcK59bafTKUjW…> Check out this great video! On a personal note, my sister works for the marketing company that was involved in this video. She did their social media strategy. It was commissioned by an Illinois consortium...but still applicable to all libraries. And I love Nick Offerman 😄 Klaudia Janek, MLIS *School Librarian* *IB Extended Essay Coordinator* *Michigan Association for Media in Education - 2019 Past President* *2019-2020 AASL Presidential Task Force - Equity, Diversity & Inclusion* 248 341 5925 https://libresbooksmi.blogspot.com/ -- *International Academy* www.iatoday.org <http://www.iatoday.org>

Determining Residency and Millages for Public Library Cards
by Adrianne Schinkai 18 Feb '20

18 Feb '20

Hello everyone, In the past, my library has used American Factfinder <https://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/index.xhtml> to help determine where millages are paid and how classifications for residency are determined for our library cards. We were basically able to punch in an applying patron’s address into the system <https://factfinder.census.gov/faces/nav/jsf/pages/searchresults.xhtml?refre…> and based on the Economic Place results, we were able to easily determine the classification. However, American Factfinder is going offline on March 31st and we are having some issues with navigating the Census Data website thus far. As I am waiting to hear a reply from the Census Data website of whether this feature will be part of the migration or going obsolete, we are exploring other options, such as working with Google Maps. Nothing is showing the ease of access we are hoping for thus far. Would anyone mind sharing their foolproof go to for determining residency and where mileages are paid? Thanks in advance for your help and advice. -- Adrianne M. Re: [Michlib-l] RefQ: 1949 article - found
by Trevor Winn 18 Feb '20

18 Feb '20

Thanks to everyone who responded to my reference request. Special thanks to Linda at the Dow Studio Archives for clearing up the confusion. The article's title is "New Shells," with an accompanying photo spread called "Modern Houses Across America," in the Aug 15, 1949 issue. While the Saxton house in Flint is not the focus, and Dow is not named, it does discuss several other architects, construction trends, and large contractors building moderately priced (!) homes in Flint, San Francisco, and Levittown. The text for this article is in Academic Search Complete. Have a good week! -Trevor From: michlib-l-bounces(a)mcls.org [mailto:michlib-l-bounces@mcls.org] On Behalf Of Trevor Winn via Michlib-l Sent: Friday, February 14, 2020 5:10 PM To: michlib-l(a)mcls.org Subject: [Michlib-l] RefQ: 1949 Alden B. Dow article in Time magazine Hi all, A patron is looking for an article that allegedly appeared in a 1949 issue of Time, possibly the week August 15, entitled "Modern Houses Across America." The article has been described to include information on architects such as Alden B. Dow and Frank Lloyd Wright. She is specifically interested in the article because it's said to include information about the only Dow home built in Flint for Millard Saxton seen here: https://www.usmodernist.org/dow.htm This Time article is referenced in an article by Dwell and in other blogs, and the partial citation was given to the patron by the Alden Dow studio. Before coming to us for help, she had scoured the ToCs of several years of Time and found nothing; we also found no article in Life by this title, only a reference from 1937. Searching the Time vault, to which I don't have full access, yielded nothing to indicate an article by this title. Please let me know off-list if you have suggestions - we're stumped! Does this article exist?? Have a good weekend! -Trevor [Trevor-Signature]

Sad news
by Lisa Waskin 18 Feb '20

18 Feb '20

Last Friday afternoon, we lost one of the shining stars of the Superior District Library. Pickford Community Library Manager, Ann Marie Smith, passed away following a very brief battle with cancer. Ann Marie was a bigger-than-life personality in the Michigan library world, and she will be missed by both our library family and the Pickford community. The following is a tribute from her family... "Dear Friends and Family, Yesterday God welcomed home a new Angel. Ann passed calmly and quietly with me in the privacy of her new apartment in the Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods in Grand Rapids, MI. Ann was an extraordinarily private person to the end. It was a privilege to be with her and after 65 years of being the little brother, it seemed a fitting last trip on which to tag along. Her end of life journey was one that she embraced with the same enthusiasm with which she lived her entire life. Despite the cancer that took her life so quickly, her relentlessly positive attitude, her endearing love for others and her life gift of giving to and taking care of others was an example that inspired and is worthy of imitation. Her chaplain at Trillium perhaps summed it up the best. After his first meeting with her he went back to his office and wondered if he had actually met an angel living on earth. Ann will be buried next to her maternal grandmother in Gilmore township, MI. We will have a private family ceremony there and will follow with a celebration of life in Pickford. As we finalize arrangements we will keep you all posted. Thank you for your love and caring. Ann lived a beautiful life because she was surrounded by beautiful family and friends. Thank you. Jenni, Kip and Kris For cards and condolences please send them to Ann Marie Smith c/o Kip Smith, 5551 SW Mistletoe Lane, Palm City, FL 34990. In lieu of flowers and in recognition of Ann's positive legacy in so many communities and libraries, donations to Ann's passion, the Pickford Community Library, or your local public library would be appreciated." KidLitCon Conference March 27th -28th, 2020, Ann Arbor
by Nakenya Lewis-Yarbrough 17 Feb '20

17 Feb '20

Hello, I am one of the organizers, along with Katy Kramp of a children’s book conference, KidLitCon. We would like to invite you to the 12th KidLitCon conference which will be held March 27-28 of 2020 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Our theme this year is "Seeing Clearly." Our keynote speakers will be American Indian Children’s Literature Award Honor winner Dawn Quigley ( Apple in the Middle ), author-illustrator Arree Chung ( Mixed) , and Newbery Honor winner Jasmine Warga ( Other Words for Home.) The full program is available on our website here: [ https://kidlitcon.org/2020-program/ | https://kidlitcon.org/2020-program/ ] KidLitCon started as an informal gathering of bloggers and reviewers, and has since grown into one of the most fun and interesting children's and YA book gatherings in the country, rotating locations every time. The 2019 conference was in Providence, and it will likely be on the West Coast in 2021, so we’re excited to have it in Michigan this year. We already have the names of over 100 book folks (authors, illustrators, librarians, teachers, and reviewers) who will be joining us. It's a gathering that focuses on energetic and friendly conversations, leaving attendees inspired to go forth and get the right books into the right hands. We also aim for good representation across the board, with diverse representation, including ethnicity, gender and religion on all our panels. This year’s event is sponsored by the Ann Arbor District Library, which is providing lunches as well as making it free to attend for everyone. Please register by February 24th to give us an accurate headcount for food and seating. Hope to see you there!
