Join Them for a fun evening! Take a deep dive into the history of coffee and the coffeehouse, and their crucial role in fostering global Jewish culture. Coffee was a new commodity and a drink and that made people alert and connected them to each other. The institution of the coffeehouse, from its establishment in the early 1500s in the Arab world, has provided an important meeting place for people from all walks of life, especially from the scholarly, creative, political, and business worlds. Coffee and coffeehouses spread rapidly to cities in Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, America, and the Middle East, and were crucial for the emergence of a modern, urban public sphere. We will explore why coffeehouses were especially attractive for migrating Jews, who became associated with café culture as owners, consumers, and habitués, and how drinks and pastries were at the center of a "third space" that encouraged sociability, acculturation, exchange of ideas, and a blossoming of literature, journalism, and art. We'll serve a light meal as well, so you'll have brain food to power all that learning. Enjoy a delicious spread of sweet and savory treats perfect for pairing with coffee: Flaky, savory cabbage strudel; refreshing freekeh salad; and two classic coffeehouse cakes, Dobos Torta and Esterházy Torta. Shachar Pinsker is a Professor of Judaic Studies and Middle East Studies at the University of Michigan. He held visiting professor positions at Harvard, Tel Aviv, Ben Gurion, and the Hebrew University. He is the author of A Rich Brew: How Cafés Created Modern Jewish Culture (NYU Press, 2018), a finalist for the 2018 Jewish Book Award, and of Literary Passports: The Making of Modernist Hebrew Fiction in Europe (Stanford University Press, 2011), the winner of the 2011 Jordan Schnitzer Book Award from the Association for Jewish Studies. He is also the editor of three volumes of literature and scholarship. His articles were published in scholarly journals, as well in Ha'aretz, The New Republic, The Jewish Week, and In Geveb.

Michigan Humanities Grants and Programs workshop

Michigan Humanities will offer a workshop focused on the grant opportunities and program offerings that are available to Michigan non-profits on Monday, October 28th at the Kalamazoo Public Library from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Grant opportunities that will be discussed during the workshop include Humanities Grants, Action Grants, and Arts and Humanities Touring Grants (a partnership with the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs). Programs by Michigan Humanities that will be explored include: Great Michigan Read, Museums on Main Street, and Poetry Out Loud. MH Staff will also introduce the new online grants and programs portal to help organizations create their online profile. The workshop will be interactive, so bring your laptop and ideas! Greetings Michigan library community, We've added a training date to the jam-packed fall schedule of Ploud workshops at MCLS in Lansing on October 21 from 10-4. Ploud (Public Libraries in the Cloud) is a feature-rich and easy to use library-specific website template used in a variety of states. Over 120 libraries in Michigan use Ploud. * It includes an advanced calendar, carousels, the ability to use drag and drop elements to create your own page layouts, Google mapping for your library location, and many more bonuses. Event registration software is included at no charge. * There is a minimal price tag for the libraries with the remainder of the cost paid for with Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) dollars. This year, the cost to each library was $207. LM conducts full-day, regional training around the state in the fall. The vendor maintains a help desk year round. * Ploud provides an easy-to-learn, easy-to-update website template with four different themes ("looks") that each have between four and a dozen color schemes. It is designed for libraries without specialized technology staff but it is easily expandable for libraries that wish to do more. Most libraries who use Ploud are single buildings but Michigan has several library systems with multiple branches who make good use of Ploud. * The technology "heavy lifting" of versioning, programming, security, and product updates is done by the vendor, Enfold Systems. * You can view more about Ploud, including short videos, at http://www.michlibrary.org/. Talk About Friends and Trustees Meetings in Charlevoix, Oct 10-11

Did you know that there is an organization that supports Friends of Libraries here in Michigan and one for public library trustees? The Friends of Michigan Libraries (FOML) and the FOML Trustee Alliance provide support, consulting and training for these two groups. In October FOML and the Trustee Alliance are having events to help Friends and Trustees network, share and learn in Charlevoix. Be sure to spread the word to your Friends groups and to your library trustees. The events are free but FOML does ask that participants register for planning purposes. The events will be held at the Charlevoix Public Library on October 10 & 11. Attendance is free, but FOML asks that you register so they can keep a good count on needed materials and refreshments.
