Summary: Does your library restrict material to patrons because of their age?
by Thomas Trahey 05 Mar '20

05 Mar '20

Thank you for all of your responses. I have attached a detailed summary. I received responses from 18 Michigan Libraries and from a Michigan Librarian that had worked in Oregon in 3 different libraries. Of those 21 libraries, almost all of them have no barriers to accessing materials, regardless of age. One library does have a policy of restricting R-rated material from underage patrons. One restricts all movies from underage patrons. One avoids the problem by not purchasing any R-rated movies. Otherwise, every library leaves the responsibility with a child's parents. Here are some relevant links provided in the responses: ALA Access for Children and Young Adults to Nonprint Materials <http://www.ala.org/aboutala/sites/ala.org.aboutala/files/content/governance…> ALA Access to Library Resources and Services for Minors <http://www.ala.org/advocacy/intfreedom/librarybill/interpretations/minors> -- Thomas Trahey Mason County District Library Head of Circulation 231.843.8465 Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment. --From the Library Bill of Rights by the ALA Council.

Input requested: Cafes in libraries
by Rebekah Craft 04 Mar '20

04 Mar '20

Good afternoon, In a few years, our library's front entryway will be renovated. At that time, we'd like to add a small cafe for our patrons to use. If your library has a cafe, can you please respond to the following questions and email me off-list at rebekah.craft(a)baldwinlib.org? Thank you for your feedback! Rebekah Does your library currently house a cafe or has it ever housed a cafe? Why types of food and beverages does/did your cafe offer? What was/is the approximate size of the cafe? If you cafe has closed, how long was it open to the public? If your cafe has closed, why did it close? If your cafe was/is managed and staffed by an outside company, did/do you have any issues? Is your library within walking distance to coffee shops or cafes? What is the approximate distance of the closest coffee shop or cafe to your library? Are there any specific populations that your library serves that helped/helps to make your cafe a valuable resource to your community? If you've visited another library out of state that had a cafe, what library was it? *--* *Rebekah Craft* *Associate Director* Baldwin Public Library 300 W. Does your library restrict material to patrons because of their age?
by Thomas Trahey 04 Mar '20

04 Mar '20

How does your library approach material like R-rated movies and younger patrons? Do you have a policy in place that requires a patron to be over 18 to check them out? Does the policy extend to video games and/or books? I will compile the responses I get and post them back to the list. -- Thomas Trahey Mason County District Library Head of Circulation 231.843.8465 Libraries should challenge censorship in the fulfillment of their responsibility to provide information and enlightenment. --From the Library Bill of Rights by the ALA Council.
