State Librarian-State Library of Ohio Ohio's State Library Board seeks an energetic, engaged, and enthusiastic professional to lead the Ohio library community as its next State Librarian<http://www.bradburymiller.com/sload.htm>. This new leader understands the realities of contemporary libraries-school, academic, special and public-and will evaluate and support current programs and services while moving forward creating a "smarter Ohio" with new initiatives, fresh staffing models, and emerging technologies. The successful candidate will realize a Smarter Ohio where Ohioans access the necessary resources to be engaged citizens, excel in the workforce, and pursue their passions and interests. The State Librarian will work closely and effectively with a variety of State Departments and Agencies as well as with national and regional library organizations to continue Ohio's tradition of leading trends and innovation in 21st century library service. The State Librarian, appointed by the five-member State Library Board, serves as the Executive Director for the State Library of Ohio<https://library.ohio.gov/> and the Secretary to the State Library Board. The State Library, located in Columbus, provides services to State government, Ohio libraries, and Ohio residents. With a dedicated staff of 51 and a $21 million budget, the State Library fulfills its mission through three channels: * Directly, by building and managing quality collections and providing hands-on service to state government * Cooperatively, through collaborative efforts and information sharing networks within the library community; and * Virtually, through online and on-the-go access to expert assistance, digitized resources, and a vast selection of electronic materials The State Librarian oversees day-to-day operations which include the development of multiple special collections, provision of services and training for Ohio's library professionals, coordination of the Ohio Digital Library and statewide delivery network, and support of the Serving Every Ohioan (SEO) consortium through the SEO Service Center in Caldwell. The State Librarian shall provide leadership and articulate a vision for statewide library services; act as an advocate for Ohio's library community; provide leadership in the networking of the library community; utilize new technologies to assist with resource sharing initiatives; represent the State Library at relevant local, state, and national conferences and meetings; provide testimony at state budget hearings which impact library funding; work closely with legislators on funding issues and programming initiatives in accordance with Ohio Revised Code Ch. 3375; recommend to the State Library Board the boundaries for public library service areas; act as liaison for the State of Ohio concerning library issues; serve as the Secretary to the State Library Board; and perform other executive level duties as assigned by the State Library Board. Minimum qualifications include a Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program and eight years of progressive, professional library experience with five years in library management and demonstrated administrative leadership ability. Desired attributes include board, personnel and fiscal management experience; strong interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and individuals; team building and decision making skills; initiative, flexibility, and the ability to facilitate change; experience working in a technologically advanced environment; knowledge of library trends and issues; and experience in library administration. Prior administrative experience with a state library agency or multi-type regional library organization is desirable. Compensation. The position offers a starting salary range of $120,000-$160,000 (placement dependent upon qualifications) and an attractive benefits package. New $2, 000 ALA grants to support community engagement work

The American Library Association (ALA) invites library workers to apply for a new annual grant to support innovative and meaningful community engagement efforts in libraries. The Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant http://www.ala.org/tools/programming/LTCEG will provide $2,000 for a school, public, academic, tribal or special library to expand its community engagement efforts. Libraries are invited to apply by designing and outlining activities for a library-led community engagement project. Project activities to be covered by the grant may include developing community engagement programs and services; partnering with a community agency that builds the capacity of the community to address an important concern/issue; or creating a program or event that connects the library to a community-identified aspiration or concern. Community engagement is the process of working collaboratively with community members ¬- be they library users, residents, faculty, students or local organizations - to address issues for the betterment of the community. In May 2019, ALA announced that it had surpassed its original $50,000 fundraising goal to support the creation of the Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant, raising a total of $70,000 from 130 individuals. The initiative was made possible by a matching grant from former ALA president and longtime generous supporter Nancy Kranich. "Thanks to our work in ALA, libraries of all types have unleashed the power of engaging their communities, working collaboratively to advance their aspirations and concerns, particularly for those voices rarely heard," said Kranich, a past president of ALA who teaches a new generation of civically focused librarians in the Masters of Information program at Rutgers University. "I'm grateful that so many people have stepped forward to join me in supporting this vital work. Together, we can ensure that more libraries develop and share innovative approaches that demonstrate what's possible when we turn outward toward our communities." The Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant is part of Libraries Transform Communities (LTC), ALA's community engagement initiative. Since 2014, LTC has reimagined the role libraries play in supporting communities. Libraries of all types, from across the country, have utilized the free dialogue and deliberation training and resources to lead community and campus forums; take part in anti-violence activities; provide a safe space for residents to come together to discuss challenging topics; and have productive conversations with civic leaders, library trustees and staff. Additional information below: As the Cultural Center of Hartland, Hartland’s Cromaine is expected by its community to offer music and art, as well as all of the science, engineering and technology engagement possible for all ages. We have a full-time Community Relations Manager position available to lead a 3-person department with several projects in the strategic plan. Your responsibilities include grant-writing and gift development, oversight of the Library’s print and online communications, including advertising, and contributing to and administration of the library’s extensive event calendar. You’ll work with a highly collaborative management team and your own staff to produce creative, innovative and exciting promotions and gift- and grant- based series programs that meet our community’s desires and exceed their expectations. Cromaine District Library is located near the intersection of M-59 and US-23—easy to get to from Detroit, Lansing, Ann Arbor and Flint. Hartland’s Cromaine (built in 1927, expanded in 1980 and again in 2017). We have a serious commitment to outreach, participating in many events and exhibits beyond our walls as well as finding new ways to be active outside this building in a busy community. To succeed in this position you must have a passion for this community—a small town kind of place with a long-standing culture of connection and commitment to caring. Cromaine wins grants, including several National Endowment for the Arts’ The Big Read. Grants for technology in Youth, local business sponsorships for the summer concert series, exhibits from the Smithsonian and to be a pilot for a national grant program—we are a place to connect to culture, music, technology, makers, as well as reading in every format. Many of the grants support a very full event calendar (check it out at www.cromaine.org/event-calendar) which you will be instrumental in creating. We are an Advantage, hoopla, and RB Digital magazine and audiobook library. We also offer Kanopy and Universal Class, services supporting our lifelong learners. We welcome new technologies and ways to improve collections and services, taking seriously every patron request for both popular materials and those more esoteric. We pay non-MLS managers from $19.00 to $20.50 per hour to start; MLS managers start at $23.74 to $24.76; 40 hours per week with half-hour paid lunch; includes some evenings and weekends with Sundays at time and one-half. MLA membership and national conference attendance (in rotation) paid. Full-time positions at Cromaine have paid vacation, sick and business time (available after completion of the 6-month introductory period), plus holiday pay, paid birthday and paid bereavement leave. Health insurance (an HSA plan) is provided for the employee and the employee may purchase health insurance for dependents at the library’s rates. Dental insurance, optical coverage, life insurance, short- and long-term disability are all provided for the employee.
