Library of Congress Classification<https://libraryjuiceacademy.com/169-LCC.php> (Library Juice Academy) Dates: April 6th through May 3rd, 2020 Cost: $175 This course focuses on learning the structure and notational system of the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) system, using the free PDFs of LCC via the Library of Congress. LCC is an enumerative system that uses an alphanumerical notation system to express the subject content of information resources. The call numbers created are a combination of class numbers and cutter numbers, thus an integral part of building numbers involves understanding the role of cutter numbers and how they are constructed using the LC Cutter Number Generating Table. Students will become familiar with the structure of LCC and how numbers are devised through basic subject analysis technique. The notational system will be explored, including its expressiveness and hospitality and how notational elements are used. Call number building devices will be practiced, including basic cutter number construction, reserved cutter numbers, and successive cutter numbers, etc. Another integral part of LCC is its in-schedule instructions such as "Divide like" and "Under each" and the use of category lists and auxiliary Tables. Hello, Thank you so much to all who joined us this morning! We had about 120 participants and it was wonderful to hear from so many on the call. A few take-aways from the conversation: * Communities are craving routines and boredom busters, so post a schedule with content that might engage the whole family. * Think outside-the-box on how to reach out to those in your community that do not have virtual access. (Don't forget accessibility guidelines) * Teen engagement might be as simple as offering them a virtual chat or game room - lots of concern for teens in this time overall. * Less is more; families are very overwhelmed right now so share challenges and engaging activities that are not necessarily curriculum heavy. closed captioning services?

My board is most likely going to have to meet before the stay home order is lifted. We will be using Zoom for a remote meeting. I was hoping to use a 3rd party for closed captioning, but what I'm finding is its really cost prohibitive. We are so small and will only need the service once or twice. I can designate someone to do live captioning, but I am hoping there is an easier solution that is low cost. I assume I'm not the only person in need of this right now. This position provides oversight and direction of the city's Library & Cultural Arts Department. Under general policy direction, this position plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates library and cultural arts programs; performs professional library work; and performs related administrative responsibilities as required. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: (1) planning, organizing and directing the city's library, cultural arts and historic preservation programs; (2) developing, recommending, and implementing department policies and procedures; (3) managing staff through other supervisors, setting goals and objectives; selecting, training and motivating staff; assessing performance and making salary recommendations; (4) representing the Library & Cultural Arts Department in the community and at professional meetings as required; and (5) coordinating department related activities with other city departments, divisions, and outside agencies. Any combination equivalent to experience and education that will provide the required knowledge and abilities may qualify a prospective candidate. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: (1) an MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program; (2) five years of library leadership/management experience in the operation of a medium to large municipal library preferably with some cultural arts and historic preservation aspect; and (3) three years supervisory experience at a senior management level. The successful candidate will also demonstrate visionary leadership skills, excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to build productive relationships through political acumen and effectiveness, promote collaborative partnerships through civic engagement, and a thorough knowledge of current trends, technologies and "best practices" for library and cultural services.
