I wanted to send along this post from the Association of Rural and Small Libraries membership listserv since it provided an example helping children continue to connect to library services by partnering with a local AM radio station. It's not 1950s entertainment, but a nostalgic way children in even the most remote Alaska communities - many with unreliable internet - can overcome further isolation brought on by the coronavirus. The public library in the small town of Homer got creative when it had to close during the pandemic, partnering with a radio station to bring a popular story hour to preschoolers stuck at home. Youth services librarian Claudia Haines reads some children's books - chosen to appeal to older kids or adults listening in, too - Thursday mornings on KBBI, which serves the town of 5,000 and surrounding villages. The AM station is among several radio broadcasters that have served far-flung Alaska communities for decades, chronicling their histories and cultures and even sending personal messages on the air for people far from the limited road system in the vast state. "Radio has such a storytelling tradition," Haines said. "It's nice to see it put to use." The program is among ways libraries nationwide are adapting during the pandemic, according to a recent survey by the Public Library Association. Of the more than 2,500 libraries that responded, over 90% said their buildings have closed. Like the Homer library, they have expanded online services like streaming media and e-books. They're also contributing to their communities. The El Dorado County Library in California is getting help using its 3-D printers to make face shields for hospitals and other facilities. The St. Louis County Library in Missouri partnered with a diaper bank to provide a drive-through emergency diaper service at four branches. In Alaska, the radio story hour, which is also live-streamed on KBBI's website, has dance breaks to let young listeners burn off some energy. The program ends with time for kids to call in. "They were really happy to call and say hello and have me recognize them," Haines said. "The spirit of the first program was, 'Hey, we've been apart while the library is closed and we're all staying home, but we're still here together in our community, and this is a way to stay connected.'" Four-year-old Polly Fraley, a regular at the library's story time, said her favorite part of a recent show was "when everybody ate dinner" in the book "Thank you, Omu!" by Oge Mora. Her mother, Cassy Quinlan, said her family has listened to the radio station for a long time, even communicating with friends who have spotty internet through KBBI's "bush lines" service, which allows locals to have messages read over the air. They can include anything from birthday greetings to love poems, Quinlan said. Polly and her 6-year-old sister, Lucy, have been missing the library since it closed in mid-March. But the pandemic "is bringing people back to simplicity, you know, the basics - radio, reading, doing a puzzle," Quinlan said. Haines, the librarian, said she jumped at the chance to connect again with families. Hosting the show is one of the few times she leaves the house, working with a single radio staffer to get it on the air. The story hour is part of the station's larger effort to keep people connected despite their isolation, KBBI development director Loren Barrett said. It's also added weekly COVID-19 briefings with officials and a show called "Social Distance" that features live music and food talk for listeners craving new recipes. "Radio, particularly in a small community like that ... can really focus in on children and do excellent work," retired broadcaster Al Bramstedt Jr. said.

Position Announcement: HESPERIA COMMUNITY LIBRARY DIRECTOR The Hesperia Community Library Board of Trustees is accepting resumes for the position of Library Director. The Hesperia Community Library, established as a district library in 1990, serves a population of 6,116 (2000 Census) in four townships located in rural Oceana and Newaygo Counties in West Michigan. Included within the library district is the Village of Hesperia, which is located 30 miles northeast of Muskegon and approximately 50 miles northwest of Grand Rapids. Hesperia Community Library is a Class II library and a member of the Lakeland Library Cooperative. The library is a single branch and maintains an 11,900 square foot facility that was renovated in 2002. Please apply as instructed below by March 13 th , 2020. Responsibilities: The Library Director is responsible for administrative duties and implementing plans, programs, and policies adopted by the Board of Trustees. In addition, the Director is responsible for staff supervision, financial management, program development and implementation, and facility maintenance. Qualifications : Candidates will be considered based on public library experience, leadership and management experience, ability to implement policies and procedures, and level of certification. Candidates should possess: Effective interpersonal relations with the public, staff, community leaders and businesses. Experience in financial management and budgeting. Understanding of district library law and operating policies. Strong communication skills in promoting library services and the value of the library including the use of social media and web page design. Proficiency with technology associated with library management, software applications and hardware maintenance. Experience in materials selection, collection maintenance and organization. Required certification for Class II library. Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited institution, preferred but not required. This is a part-time 35 hour per week position with a salary range between $35,000 and $40,000 based on experience. Additional benefits may be negotiable. Health care is not provided. In addition to the webinars listed in the earlier email below, I've added a new one for teen services. Don't Sweat the Flops: an INTERACTIVE Virtual Workshop for Young Adult Library Staff! If you cannot attend live and do not have a web cam, I'll be sharing the recording out to all to watch at a later point. Don't Sweat the Flops... It won't be perfect the first time. Or the second. Accepting this will accelerate skill building and frankly make the process a lot more enjoyable for teens. Fear of failure creates anxiety and prevents many people from even starting on a path toward growth whether it be one of personal or even professional development. This session will guide teen librarians on how to help break through that fear by making "flopping" fun. Flow Circus will introduce librarians to the flop ball; this simple, yet challenging skill toy has players use the back of their hands to throw and catch - a slight change that requires a shift in mindset and the player to pay attention in a new way. During the process, Flow Circus will provide strategies to help empower teens to get out of their own way and ask for help when they need it. Participants get a set of six flop balls as a reminder of lessons learned and to use for programming with teens. It also serves as a "pause button" that they can keep on their desk or in their pocket as a signal to pay attention to the process of the task in front of them. ALA Virtual National Library Legislative and Advocacy Week !

Greetings Everyone: Please see information below about ALA's Virtual Advocacy activities in lieu of National Library Legislative Day- which would be occurring next week. Take Care! Clare Good afternoon, Apologies for cross posting. In a non-COVID19 universe, next week would be ALA's day on the Hill as it was originally scheduled. While we were fortunate to have the fly-in-which gave us a targeted in-person opportunity to keep our relationships with members of Congress strong-canceling our grassroots training and Hill Day (and all the excitement that comes with!) it is a real loss. In place of this year's National Library Legislative Day, we are trying out an expanded virtual training. You can find the full schedule on ALA's website: ala.org/advocacy/nlld<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ala.or…> PPA worked on this plan in close coordination with the Chapter Relations Office, United for Libraries, the Committee on Legislation, and other member advocacy leaders across the association. Chapters are a major part and focus of this effort-we believe a strong network of chapters are the foundation of a strong national organization. We see ALA during this time encouraging all of our advocates to take a leap forward, to expand their skillsets, and to pioneer new forms of digital outreach. A few notes that guided our thinking: * Our vision: library advocates need an opportunity to hear from each other, to train with ALA virtually, and to continue creating connections and relationships with decision makers-and most importantly-the ALA advocacy network right now. * Typically, NLLD has a registration cost and specialized trainings (like the Congressional Management Foundation webinar) are available to ALA members only. During this critical moment, we are opening access to everyone. We are thankful to the Committee on Legislation for supporting us in this change. * Knowing we are all balancing screen time with multiple responsibilities at home, the week is a "design your own path" program based on individual preference and availability. Advocates can tune in every day between May 4 and May 8 for live afternoon sessions and complete advocacy actions when they are able. This digital push is a new frontier for ALA. The experiment will give us new insights about our advocates and our own ability to provide high-quality virtual advocacy instruction. All recordings will be available on our website through May 31. Next week, we are also looking forward to hearing from you as you sharing tips and advocacy advice throughout the week. As always, we look forward to your feedback and appreciate your patience and collaboration as we move forward with this new approach. A little update on how our curbside is going and an opinion piece (not by me) in LJ

This is a good one, so I'm passing it on in case you haven't seen it already. I will admit, we started curbside pickup this Monday after 6 weeks of total closure. After consultation with our local health department we moved forward by haivng only 6 staff at a time in the building. At 24,000 sq ft, we can maintain distance. We each wear a mask, but take them off if we are in an office and answering the phone. We put them back on if we are going to talk to another staff member from a distance or will be walking around the building. Staff who pull books and put them outside for pickup wear gloves. The building is fully cleaned and the bathrooms & work areas are disinfected by the cleaning grew every day. We also have wipes and hand sanitizer for staff to use when changing work stations. We have 3 book carts outside numbered 1, 2, & 3. Patrons schedule a 15-minute window of time to pick-up. They are told which cart # their items will be on. When they arrive, the come up to the front door and show a staff member (who is inside and behind the glass) their library card or id. They then can take their items. We started taking returns for the first time in 6 weeks, but only during the curbside pickup times. We have our slots locked and instead have the very large rolling garbage/recycling bins that the Village provides to homeowners. DPW loaned us 8. This way we an easily close the lid once a bin is full and roll it out of the way for quarantine, without touching the items to put them on a cart (as would happen if they came through the slot). We started pickup this Monday (4/27) of only items that have been on our hold shelf for 6 weeks. We emailed all of those patrons to get first dibs for pickup this week. Turns out, we didn't need a whole week for them. Many never called us back and it was not crazy busy. This morning we opened up for new requests. We had been planning to be scheduling the new people next week, but we were able to fit some in at the end of today and the rest on Thu & Fri of this week. We all know that libraries are under attack, especially in regards to funding, pretty much all the time. I think part of our collective fear at this moment is local governments thinking that because we closed that we aren't really that important. I believe some are feeling that tension without verbalizing this sentiment. We worry about the short-term as well as the long-term consequences that our closings will have on our libraries. However, I do not thinking rushing to reopen solves this issue. As I explained to my library board, I will not reopen the library until I can ensure the health and safety of our staff. I will not reopen the library just because the governor cancels the stay at home order. We will be slow and deliberate, because for the first time in my 20 years of being a librarian, the decisions I make mean the life or death of my employees. (Yes. I said that last part. A bit of hyperbole, but honestly, not that much.) Safety will be the top priority. As I explained, the very thing we strive to achieve—engaging the community and filling up the library—is exactly what makes our library vulnerable. I will say that I am glad they back me on this. I feel better for my people, and about the months ahead. To more emphatically state my position in regards to the health and safety of all library workers: If your plan is to begin reopening as soon as possible, or engaging in curbside soon, then I want to see the library director and administrators on the front lines of service. I want them to be the ones to take books out to the cars, handle materials, and empty book drops. Remember, when people say "That's why you make the big bucks" (they don't say that too often in libraries), this means you. Our lower-paid employees are often our most vulnerable in terms of being able to handle sickness and unplanned financial setbacks. Is your desire to reopen worth that risk? Are you certain that giving into pressures (both real and imagined) to reopen, versus your duty to protect the health and safety of your employees, will be in the long term best interest of the library? I encourage all of us, no matter what your opinion, to participate in discussions at the local and county levels, and especially in library-based discussions around this topic. This is our biggest test yet; we will need each other more than ever. Stay safe. Stay healthy.
