If you are an accomplished leader ready to enhance the Library's role in a world that continues to change, the Board of Trustees of the Southwest Public Libraries<https://swpl.org/> (SPL) encourages you to apply for this rare opportunity. Working with a staff of 74 team members supporting two locations and a $6.4 million annual budget, the Library provides excellent customer service vital to its 145,000+ constituents. Reporting to the seven-member appointed governing Board of Trustees (appointed by the School Board), the successful candidate will effectively collaborate with the Board, the staff, the Friends of the Library, and external partners to communicate the Library's mission and goals. Key opportunities include developing and implementing library services and programs through and after the COVID-19 pandemic, representing the Library in its many communities, through equity, diversity, and inclusion-ensuring that the Library welcomes all and provides access to information at the Library and outside the Library's walls, developing a robust staff development plan, continuing strong stewardship of resources, and developing and implementing emerging library technologies. Seeing significant population growth in the last decade, SPL serves urban, suburban, and rural diverse communities including a large Latino population and new populations of Somalian and Russian immigrants. Both Grove City and Lincoln Village have much to offer in addition to excellent libraries. As suburbs of Ohio's capital city of Columbus, residents enjoy an exceptional quality of life with all of the conveniences of metropolitan living combined with a unique, small-town feel. Voted twice as Best Hometown by Ohio Magazine, Grove City is a walkable, vibrant place to live, work, shop, and play. Lincoln Village, started as a planned community in 1955, and is home to Lincoln Village Plaza, a major shopping center, which includes the Westland Area Library. For more information, visit SPL Links<https://www.bradburymiller.com/southwestpllinks.htm>. Responsibilities. Under the direction of the governing Board of Trustees, the Library Director functions as the Chief Executive Officer of the Library System; administers the overall program of library services to the residents of the South-Western City School District; directs human resources programs for the Library System; oversees development of library collections; administers budget and reporting system and monitors fiscal operations; oversees management of Library property; directs public relations for the Library System; and fulfills the other obligations to the Board of Trustees. Old Detroit Free Press and News up for grabs
by Janelle Bishop 23 Oct '20

23 Oct '20

Hey Everyone, I had someone for our community donate two old newspapers to our library. We can't use them and neither can our local historical society. Is there anyone who would like them? I can send them in RIDES delivery... They are the Detroit Free Press from Wednesday, April 1, 1981 and the Detroit News from March 31, 1981 and seem to center around an assassination attempt of President Reagon. They are yellowed and have fold marks in them because it looks like they were stored in the original delivery bag folded in thirds but otherwise are in good condition. I have attached a picture of them below. Let me know if anyone wants them. Thanks, Janelle Janelle (Martin) Bishop Head of Fiction Marguerite deAngeli Library Lapeer District Library 921 W. Larry Martin "WWII: In Their Own Words" digital program
by Battles, Calvin 23 Oct '20

23 Oct '20

Hello Fellow Public Librarians, I know we are all looking for quality programming ideas that can be done virtually. The Jackson District Library is transitioning one of our most popular programs into a digital program that I would like to recommend to all of you. Over the past 12+ years, the Jackson District Library has hosted Larry Martin's In Their Own Words ([ http://lmww2.com/ | Larry Martin's WWII In Their Own Words ] at our Carnegie Branch. Also during this time Larry has also done this program in libraries around the state of Michigan, and it always gets a great response. "In Their Own Words" has drawn between 80 and 150 attendees per event. An estimated 5,000 people have come to hear the reflections and experiences of WWII veterans that Larry has interviewed. We will begin hosting Larry once a month for a Zoom/Facebook Live program until the end of 2020. Larry will show one of the hundreds of interviews that he has done and then answer questions from the audience. The interviews are always interesting and Larry has interviewed at least one person who experienced every part of WWII, from prisoners of war, to German citizens, to soldiers who survived Pearl Harbor. To hear these men and women discuss there experiences in WWII is truly fascinating. Larry is very excited by the fact that he could provide this program to libraries around the country digitally, so if you are interested in having this amazing program you should reach out to him. You are also welcome to contact me if you have any questions about the program. Thanks and stay safe.
