National Runaway Prevention Month is in November

Hi Team, I wanted to share some resources for you to help support the youth in your community during National Runaway Prevention Month. The National Runaway Safeline has some great resources, including: -Free Educational and Outreach Materials: https://www.1800runaway.org/free-promotional-materials/ -Presentations about the National Runaway Prevention Month for the community, social media posts and more. https://www.1800runaway.org/nrpm/ -Runaway Prevention Curriculum. "a free, evidence-based, interactive, 14 module curriculum intended to educate young people about alternatives to running away as well as to build life skills so that youth can resolve problems without resorting to running away or unsafe behavior." https://www.1800runaway.org/runaway-prevention-curriculum-sign-up/ -They also have prevention specialists that will lead a virtual youth group discussion: https://www.1800runaway.org/providers-educators/kids-call/ Also there is an excellent article on Webjunction: https://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/serving-homeless-youth.html This is a great opportunity to network with social service agencies and homeless prevention programs. Also, every school district has a McKinney-Vento Liaison who serves as one of the primary contacts between homeless families and school staff, district personnel, shelter workers, and other service providers. They usually welcome another way of getting information out to families and children. Remember: 1 in 10 young adults (age 18 to 25) and 1 in 30 minors (age 13-17) experienced unaccompanied homelessness in a one-year period. Last week many of you heard about this program on the Friday library director call. We wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to see the program here and review the details. This is a really unique opportunity to venture into some new models of engagement. No matter your level of knowledge around community engagement or your role in the library you can take part in this program on November 5. Check out the full details below. Libraries Engage Appreciatively for Positive Change (LEAP) 2020 MCLS, as a continuation of our partnership with the Library of Michigan and our shared Michigan Libraries Engage project, encourages Michigan library staff of all levels to attend a special virtual event on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020. The program, called LEAP (Libraries Engage Appreciatively for Positive Change), will be an opportunity to learn methods and techniques for using Appreciative Inquiry to engage with participants' local communities and initiate positive change to ensure successful community engagement projects. Appreciative Inquiry is an approach to community engagement that focuses on positive aspects of change and drawing out and building on existing strengths. It also highlights the importance of collaborative conversations, dialogue, and stories. Who will be facilitating this program? Maureen McKenna of Return on Energy Consulting<http://returnonenergy.ca/about/>, an internationally respected and highly sought-out expert in the field of Appreciative Inquiry, will be facilitating the LEAP program along with MCLS's Engagement, Consulting, & Training team. Who are these workshops for and what will they cover? The skills and knowledge gained will support library staff members in both developing new community engagement initiatives and strengthening initiatives already in progress. It will help previously-trained Harwood Public Innovators expand their dialogues with new conversation methods, and assist those who have not been trained in Harwood methods to begin conversations. This program is for all levels and roles of library staff. Following the November event, attendees will receive six months of facilitated learning and coaching via Zoom meetings. Requirements for attendance This will be a highly interactive virtual workshop. Attendees MUST have a microphone enabled and turn their cameras on for full participation, and will be expected to attend the full day to gain maximum value of the program. There are no special qualifications or prerequisites needed to attend; we hope many of you from all roles in libraries will consider how this program can impact your life and your work engaging your communities in a variety of ways. Let’s LEAP together… one step at a time! LEAP (Libraries Engage Appreciatively for Positive Change) registration is now open. Please excuse cross-posting and note that this event includes lists that extend beyond Michigan, but the event is for Michigan library staff only. As part of our shared Michigan Libraries Engage project, MCLS and the Library of Michigan invite all Michigan library staff to a special virtual event on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, 9:30am – 4:30pm Eastern. We have heard from many Michigan libraries that the priority right now, in the wake of disruptions and closures caused by COVID-19, is to start reengaging with your communities one conversation, one patron at a time; LEAP will focus on teaching you some great techniques to do just that. This workshop day, as well as the six monthly virtual facilitated learning and coaching sessions to follow, will help you feel equipped and inspired to work toward engaging your community in new ways as we continue to navigate our mid-pandemic, and move toward a post-pandemic, world – one small LEAP at a time. "While most Michigan job providers are doing their part to slow the spread of COVID-19, these rules provide them with clarity regarding the necessary requirements to keep their workplaces safe and their employees healthy," said Gov. Whitmer. "I will continue to work around the clock with my partners in labor and business to ensure protections for every Michigan worker." Under the Emergency Rules, businesses that resume in-person work must, among other things, have a written COVID-19 preparedness and response plan and provide thorough training to their employees that covers, at a minimum, workplace infection-control practices, the proper use of personal protection equipment (PPE), steps workers must take to notify the business or operation of any symptoms of COVID-19 or a suspected or confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19, and how to report unsafe working conditions. MIOSHA's Emergency Rules implement workplace safeguards for all Michigan businesses and specific requirements for industries, including manufacturing, construction, retail, health care, exercise facilities, restaurants and bars. The rules establish workplace safety requirements and employers should coordinate these requirements with the Emergency Order<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…> issued by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services restricting gathering sizes, requiring face coverings in public spaces and childcare facilities, placing capacity limitations on stores, bars and other public venues and providing safer workplaces. "As we reengage our economy, the Governor's actions reiterate the importance to keep workplaces safe for employees and protect customers from COVID-19 transmission," said COVID-19 Workplace Safety Director Sean Egan. "These rules will formalize the workplace safety guidelines previously in place, and are necessary to save lives. We will continue to educate workers and employers on requirements for businesses to get open and stay open." Since March 2020, employers have reported 30 worker deaths from COVID-19 in Michigan and 127 in-patient hospitalizations potentially linked to workplace exposure. MIOSHA has received over 3,800 complaints from employees alleging uncontrolled COVID-19 hazards in the workplace and 263 referrals from local government, including local health departments, indicating that businesses were not taking all the necessary measures to protect their employees from infection. "Since the beginning of this pandemic, the working folks I've talked to have been most concerned about avoiding catching this awful virus at work and bringing it home and spreading it to their families," said Ron Bieber, president of the Michigan AFL-CIO. "We need to make sure we're doing everything we can to help these people protect themselves and their families, because we can't have a strong economy when people are catching a deadly virus just by showing up to work." "Small businesses owners are dedicated to providing safe workplaces. Consistent, practical, and clear rules are important to achieving that goal," said Brian Calley, president of the Small Business Association of Michigan. "We welcome the initiation of the departmental rule-making process to establish predicable and well defined expectations." ALSC now accepting applications for the Baker & Taylor Summer Reading Grant ALSC and the Programs and Services Recognition Committee are now accepting online applications for the ALSC/Baker & Taylor Summer Reading Grant. This $3,000 grant is designed to encourage reading programs for children in public libraries, while recognizing ALSC members for outstanding program development. Due to COVID-19, the committee will consider proposals for virtual programming, as well as in-person programs which can take into account public health and safety measures Each application will be judged on the following: * The plan and outline submitted for a theme-based summer reading program in a public library * Program ideas that are open to all children (birth - 14 years) * The committee encourages innovative proposals involving children with physical or mental disabilities Applicants must be personal members of ALSC, as well as ALA members, to apply.
