Resources PLA - Special Olympics Young Athletes A growing number of public libraries are working with Special Olympics Young Athletes<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.speci…> to host inclusive play programs for children with and without intellectual disabilities ages 2–7 and to share resources with families to practice their skills at home. Special Olympics has heard from some of its state affiliates that they want to work with public libraries! PLA and Special Olympics are hosting an informal sharing session at 1pm Eastern (10am Pacific) on Thursday, February 25, 2021 to learn more about how public libraries can work with Special Olympics. We are looking for representatives from a dozen or so libraries of various sizes to join us to hear a little more about the Young Athletes program and give feedback on how it might spread to new public library partners. USBBY The United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) invites everyone to the opening act of the 14th International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) regional conference on Saturday, March 6. The Opening Act event will be dedicated to exploring two amazing books: Ashley Bryan's Infinite Hope in the morning session (10:30 am - 12:00 pm EST), and Ruta Sepetys' The Fountains of Silence in the afternoon session (2:30 - 4:00 pm EST). There is a modest registration fee of $15 ($10 for USBBY members), which will go to support USBBY's twinning partners, the IBBY national sections in Haiti, Lebanon, El Salvador, and Palestine. Learn more and register: https://www.usbby.org/14th-regional-opening-act.html Field Guide Mega Subramaniam and Linda Braun worked over the summer on a co-design process with over 130 library staff from across the U.S. Once the process was over they set to work on developing a Field Guide for Library Staff Serving Youth and Families during times of crisis, <https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fyxlab.isc…> now, six months later, the Guide is available. The Guide sets out a set of essential tasks that library staff should focus on in order to be successful during times of crisis and these include community engagement and asset mapping and re-thinking library structures. Do the Write Thing Challenge The annual Do the Write Thing Challenge is an national essay program that gives middle school students an opportunity to examine the impact of violence on their lives. Through this program, students are invited to communicate in written form what they think should be done to reduce youth violence. Students are also encouraged to make personal commitments to do something about the problem. Two national ambassadors from Michigan will be invited by the National Campaign to Stop Violence to attend the “Do the Write Thing Challenge” recognition week in Washington, D.C. Library Director, William P. Faust Public Library of Westland (MI) The William P. Faust Public Library of Westland Board of Trustees is seeking a full-time Library Director who will work collaboratively with the Board, employees, volunteers and community to provide superior library services to the Westland community. The Board of Trustees consists of five members appointed by the Westland Mayor and approved by the Westland City Council as provided in the Michigan City, Village and Township Libraries Act. The Library Director is responsible for the administration of the Library and is the executive officer of the Library. The William P. Faust Public Library is a Class VI library with over 33,000 gross square feet. The library is located in southeastern Michigan's Wayne County and serves a diverse population of about 85,000 residents. Westland is the 10th largest city in the state of Michigan and located half way between Detroit and Ann Arbor Michigan. There are numerous cultural, educational, and recreational activities located within easy driving distance. Additional information about the library can be found at www. westland.lib.mi.us/ and the community at cityofwestland.com. The library has a dedicated library millage and total revenues of approximately 3.5 million dollars. The Library has a staff of 36, including 11 MLS staff. The staff is organized and has a collective bargaining agreement with the Library. The Library Director prepares and submits the library budget to the Board and advises the Board on policy matters The position requires an MLS/MLIS from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association and a permanent professional certificate (or the ability to obtain one) from the Library of Michigan. Additional qualifications include: at least 4 years of professional library experience in a public library, of which at least two years have been in a management or supervisory position; a thorough knowledge of public library service; proven experience in successful financial management and budgeting; an understanding of technology and its application in public libraries; strong management skills; excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with many diverse groups. Experience with collective bargaining and millage campaigns are desirable. Salary is commensurate with experience with a strong fringe benefit package, including 10% pension contribution, health, dental and vision insurance, paid time off for personal and vacation. Governor Releases her proposed FY22 budget

Today, Governor Whitmer released her third executive budget, centered on equitably growing the state’s economy by expanding skills training and childcare for families, providing a further down payment on rebuilding the state’s crumbling bridges and water infrastructure, and helping small businesses recover from the pandemic. All combined, the full budget is just over $67 billion. [Chart, pie chart Description automatically generated] The budget and staffing levels for the Library of Michigan within the Department of Education is located within the General Fund budget and remains flat from FY21 to FY22. State Aid for Libraries remains at $13,067,700. (Below is a screenshot from page 78 of the budget – linked at the end of this communication.
