request for recommendations: catalog software for small school library
by Jennifer Dye 02 Aug '21

02 Aug '21

I know I've seen discussions of catalog software for small libraries, but am evidently not coming up with useful search terms. Or at least not looking in the right months in the archive. I've been asked to set up a cataloging system for a small school library. Cost is obviously an issue, but they are not looking for free software--they recognize that they will get a better and more robust product by spending some money. (As long as I identify software that is better and more robust.) They have had about 2000 books donated from another school that closed. I haven't seen them yet, but it didn't sound like they had been cataloged. I should be seeing the books this Wednesday. They expect that they will be able to scan books to start the cataloging. That will mean identifying software and hardware for scanning. I've started some searching, but would appreciate suggestions. While there might be a computer that can be used for this, they are open to buying a basic desktop. There are no plans to network the catalog. Any leads or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Jennifer Jennifer Dye BST/SSER, Assistant Manager Main Branch Detroit Public Library jdye(a)detroitpubliclibrary.org Main Branch 5201 Woodward Ave. Tu-Sat 10-6 Detroit, Michigan 48202 [DPL Logo]<http://www.detroitpubliclibrary.org> Detroit Public Library Disclaimer This message contains confidential information and is intended only for the individual(s) addressed in the message. MDE Press Release for Talk: Text to Learn
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 02 Aug '21

02 Aug '21

Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has released the press release on the Talk: Text to Learn. (See MDE email below my message) So, don't forget: Sign Your Library Up for the Free TALK Program<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftexttolear…> Today! All libraries are encouraged to sign up for this important and FREE service to support the building of pre-literacy skills in your service populations. TALK: Text and Learn for Kindergarten sends fun activities parents can do with their babies and preschoolers at home. Developed by librarians and based on Every Child Ready to Read, TALK activities are designed to get kids ready for school success. The messages align with tips librarians share with parents at storytime, but because they are delivered via text message, you can reach parents you don't see at the library. Anyone in Michigan can sign up to receive the messages, but libraries that sign up to promote TALK can send two messages per month to users in their zip codes advertising library events and services, and get access to award-winning promotional materials, from flyers and yard signs to social media posts and QR codes. Tools and guides to help you develop community partnerships to reach parents you don't already see at the library are also included. Check out the informational webinar on Ypsi's free TALK service: https://youtu.be/zOZhlbQmpCs<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fyoutu.be%…>, hosted by the Library of Michigan. Sign up<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.goog…> now to begin reviewing TALK resources you can use for a successful launch, then attend training sessions on Zoom later this summer to ask questions and get more in-depth information on using the provided resources. TALK sends two text messages each week suggesting early literacy activities that parents and caregivers can easily incorporate into daily routines with their children. The service also notifies parents of free activities and services at their local public libraries. TALK is available to parents and caregivers in Michigan with children ages 5 and under. Parents can sign up by texting TALK to 75547 or visiting www.texttolearn.com<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>. "The more parents and caregivers speak positively, read, and listen to young children, the better prepared children will be in their emerging literacy when they begin school," said State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice. "TALK is another support we can provide for our families to help meet the state's Top 10 strategic education plan goal of improving early literacy achievement." "TALK is a great resource for all parents, but it's really designed to reach parents who may not have a lot of free time or resources" said Jodi Krahnke, the head of youth services at the Ypsilanti District Library. "We're excited to provide parents ideas for quick and easy things they can do to help their children be ready for school." The service is funded in part by a national leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The grant allows TALK, originally created by libraries in Washtenaw County, to be used by all public libraries in Michigan to support early learning in their communities. State Librarian Randy Riley said, "TALK is a great opportunity for libraries to engage and encourage families to practice simple activities each day with their young children, such as singing and playing, which then helps to develop the cognitive and language skills they need to do well in school and beyond." TALK is derived from the research-based program Every Child Ready to Read, which promotes five practices to build essential pre-reading skills: reading, singing, talking, writing and playing. Each message begins with one of the five practices and details an activity that parents can use to help their child develop early literacy skills. The content goes beyond literacy and helps parents build other important skills such as pre-math and social emotional skills. While the service is available and valuable to every family, the goal is to reach parents who may not otherwise have the time or the ability to attend library programs. It is available in English and Spanish. This project is led by the Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) and any requests for additional information can be made to YDL's head of youth services, Jodi Krahnke, at TextAndLearn(a)gmail.com<mailto:TextAndLearn@gmail.com>. The technology platform to distribute the messages is being developed by the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services, and materials to promote the service will be available to libraries through the Library of Michigan. HighScope Center for Early Education Research and Evaluation helped ensure messages were aligned to a child's development and will be conducting an evaluation of the project. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services [LG-246434-OLS-20<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flnks.gd%2…>] with support from the Library of Michigan. # # # The Library of Michigan is an agency within the Michigan Department of Education and is dedicated to providing the people of Michigan and their government one perpetual institution to collect, preserve and provide access to the story of the State, and to support libraries in their role as essential community anchors.
