Do you have a library storywalk?
by Lorry Traver 16 Apr '26

16 Apr '26

Good morning, My library is researching the possibility of adding a story walk at our library, and were hoping we could get some feedback from other libraries who already have story walks. If you have the time, could you answer these questions for me please? 1) What company did your library use for the storywalk signs? 2) How have the materials stood up through weather and overall use? 3) How difficult is it to switch out stories throughout the year? 4) Is there one thing you wish you could change about your storywalk? Thank you so much for your help! -- *“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled is a spark.”* *—*Victor Hugo *Lorry Traver (She/Her)* Public Services Librarian Brandon Township Library 248-627-1460

DIRECTOR SEARCH: ST. IGNACE PUBLIC LIBRARY – Through April 30, 5:00 PM, or until filled. Due to the retirement of our current Director, the Board of Trustees of the St. Ignace Public Library, St. Ignace, Michigan, is seeking a qualified, creative, dynamic and motivated leader as Director. The Board of Trustees has established goals and priorities for the library’s future and is looking forward to recruiting a Director that is excited about community involvement, is able to manage all areas of library services, and will lead library growth supported by recently passed millages. The successful candidate will be a customer-oriented person who enjoys the small-town Upper Peninsula way of life and interacting with the public as a hands-on Director. Strong interpersonal, communication, and technology skills and the ability to represent the library in the community are essential. The St. Ignace Public Library is a purpose-built building completely paid for by the community through donations. It was opened in 2005 and has a unique architectural presence in the community. With its view of the Straits of Mackinac and Mackinac Island, the library provides a pleasing venue for both staff and patrons. Current staffing includes a full-time Director, a part-time Assistant Director, Clerk and Youth Services Clerk. A successful millage levy in 2025 and 2026, each for 10 years, provides the funding necessary to meet the recent goals established by the Board of Trustees. The library serves a population of approximately 4,400 and counts nearly 2,000 regular patrons. There is an active and supportive Friends group and several library volunteers. The library program has strong community support. St. Ignace, Gateway to the Upper Peninsula, and ferry access to historic Mackinac Island, is a popular tourist destination and as such is a busy community, particularly in the summer. There are events occurring almost each weekend and often during the week. These include Music on the Bayfront, the internationally recognized St. Ignace Auto Show, and the famous Mackinac Bridge Walk on Labor Day weekend. In addition to the planned events, there are miles of lake shore, hiking trails, snow mobile trails and a rich history that is recognized and featured in our local museums. A first class marina, SCUBA diving on many Great Lakes wrecks, and excellent fishing are available for those who enjoy water activities. In St. Ignace, almost everyone has an opportunity to participate in some activity and enjoy the sense of community a small town engenders. Please send cover letter and resume to info(a)stignacelibrary.org The attached Job Description provides further details. Rushing the filing process increases the risk of errors and may slow the processing of your refund. Please take your time and thoroughly review your information before filing your return.” To ensure an accurate income tax return is filed with the state of Michigan: * File electronically. Taxpayers can go to michigan.gov/mifastfile<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/http:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Fmifastfil…> to learn more about e-filing options. Taxpayers can also file for the first time this year through Michigan Treasury eServices<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Ftaxes%2F…>. * Mail a paper return to the right address. To avoid processing delays, paper filers should carefully follow tax form instructions when sending a paper return to a specific address. * Fill in all requested information. When completing your tax return, take the time to ensure the information is accurate. Paper returns should be legible and easy to read.. * Review all numbers. While software catches and prevents many errors on e-filed returns, math errors remain common on paper returns. * Provide the right routing and account numbers. Requesting direct deposit of a state tax refund is convenient, enhances security and enables the taxpayer to access their money faster compared to a mailed paper check. Make sure your financial institution's routing and account numbers are entered on the return accurately. * Sign and date the return. If joint filing a paper return, both spouses must sign and date the return. Most e-file software platforms allow electronic signatures. * Submit all the required forms. Taxpayers who file a paper tax return should carefully follow the instructions and attach all forms as indicated. If possible, use a paperclip, binder clip or rubber band to hold all documents together. * Owe tax? Taxpayers can pay their outstanding tax balance by check, money order, eCheck, debit or credit card<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Ftaxes%2F…>. To date, more than 4.25 million returns have been processed, and $2.5 billion in refunds have been distributed for this 2026 filing season. Need an extension? Individual taxpayers who need additional time to file beyond the April 15 deadline can request an extension to Oct. 15, 2026. Request additional time with MI Form 4, Instructions for Application for Extension of Time to File Michigan Tax Returns<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Ftaxes%2F…>. If requesting for an extension, taxpayers should also estimate their tax liability and pay any amount owed by April 15, 2026<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Ftaxes%2F…>, to avoid interest and penalties. An extension to file is not an extension to pay. Taxpayers in emergency areas<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Ftaxes%2F…> can have additional time to file and pay state taxes, with penalties and interest waived for those who qualify. Relief must be requested directly from Treasury. Have questions? Michigan taxpayers who have questions about or need help<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Ftaxes%2F…> with their individual income tax returns or refunds can digitally connect with the Treasury through the Michigan Treasury eService<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Ftaxes%2F…> platform. Allow 4–6 weeks from the date you receive your e-filed state tax return confirmation or 6–8 weeks from the postmark date on your mailed state tax return to receive your refund. After that timeframe, you can check the status at michigan.gov/wheresmyrefund<https://links-2.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.michigan.gov%2Fwheresmy…>. # # # ________________________________ This service is provided to you at no charge by the Michigan Department of Treasury. Re: Teen Advisory Board Communications Question
by Library Director 14 Apr '26

I would link and create a google phone number for messaging or utilize a service that can send messages. It puts less work on the kids and might be more direct. Some may just never be bothered. Teen Advisory Board Communications Question
by Anya Miller 14 Apr '26

14 Apr '26

Hello, everyone! I have a question specifically for those running or assisting with their library's Teen Advisory Board: Is there a method of communication that you have found particularly useful for getting in touch with your kids and sending out reminders? I have all of the kids' emails, but I know my teens, and I know they are absolutely not checking their emails on even a semi-regular basis. One of my TAB members recommended using Remind, which I remember using in high school when it was Remind 101. I do not want to create a group chat or discord server that I would have to be a part of. I love these kids, but I would very much prefer to not give them my personal contact information. Remind seems like the best solution, but I wanted to see if anyone else has come up with anything better. Thanks! -- *Anya Miller (*they/them) Library Associate Brandon Township Public Library 304 South Street, Ortonville, MI 48462 248-627-1466 www.brandonlibrary.org *ENGAGE • EDUCATE • ENRICH • EMPOWER*

Library Law Office Hours THIS Thursday April 16, 2026
by Membiela, Clare (MDE) 14 Apr '26

14 Apr '26

`Hello! Are you a Michigan library director, board member, or friends group member? Have you ever faced questions involving the law and how it relates to Michigan libraries? Questions like: Heavy rains have caused the library’s roof to leak causing a slow but steady drip..drip… right in the center of the library main reading room adjacent to the service desk. As a temporary measure, a bucket was placed to catch the water while an urgent call was made to the facilities manager, and plans were made to address the problem. In addition to the bucket, the library placed a plastic “Wet Floor” sign on the floor to one side of the bucket and an in-house created printed sign stating “watch your step” on the other side, so that patrons on multiple sides of the bucket could see at least one sign. In between assisting patrons and other duties, the library staff at the service alerted patrons who were venturing too close to the filling bucket. Other staff would periodically empty the water from the bucket. A patron approached the desk with a question and to check out some materials, bringing her toddler son with her. The boy was fascinated with the drip and the bucket and had to be repeatedly reminded by library staff to stay away. The mother took the boy’s hand and led him back to the desk as she finished her business. An issue occurred with the transaction and during an intense conversation with the attending library staff member, the mom dropped the boy’s hand. Suddenly there was a cry followed by a shouted “What the Hell!?” The boy had knocked over the bucket of water while attempting to get into the bucket. The bucket toppled with the boy, spilling a small amount of rusty water onto the carpet and the pants of another patron passing by. The boy was unhurt, but wet and crying from surprise and fear of the other patron’s yelled comment. The mom complained about the bucket as an “attractive nuisance” and a public safety hazard and submitted a complaint to the library board asking for reimbursement of the boy’s clothing and shoes. The other affected patron wanted reimbursement for the cost of cleaning his pants, with the option of replacement cost if the stains did not come out. The mom has threatened a call to the municipal code office and a lawyer. How should the library reply? For information on these and other questions, please join us for The April Library Law Office Hours THIS WEEK, Thursday, April 16, 2026, at 3:00 pm Registration is required.
