CMU Libraries and the Clarke Historical Library Announce New Director
by Irwin, Kathy Maureen 13 Jan '22

13 Jan '22

Carrie L. Marsh has been named the director of the Clarke Historical Library of Central Michigan University. She begins her duties on February 14. The announcement was made by Kathy Irwin, dean of University Libraries. A nationwide search was conducted after the August 2021 retirement of Frank Boles, who served as Clarke’s director for more than 30 years. Marsh comes from The Claremont Colleges Library in Claremont, California, where she has served as director of Special Collections and Libraries since 2014. Her tenure in the Claremont consortium included library assistant director and head of special collections, reference librarian for the Denison Library, and special collections librarian for the Honnold/Mudd Library. Marsh is a proud CMU alum, earning a B.A. in English and Art History in 1984, followed by a Master’s in Literature in 1986. She was a student assistant for the Park Library during her undergraduate and graduate studies. She has a Master’s in Library Science with an emphasis on special collections librarianship from the University of Arizona. “Carrie has excellent management experience, has a track record of developing successful partnerships with college faculty, and has demonstrated a thorough understanding of DEI needs and opportunities in archives and special collections. I look forward to working with her as she advances the mission and vision of the Clarke Historical Library,” said Irwin, who led a search committee that included current faculty, library staff, and members of the Clarke Historical Library Board of Governors. Among Marsh’s professional achievements: a collaboration that began in 2012 with Laura Stalker, former deputy director of the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, to teach a course for the California Rare Book School about history, theory and practice of special collections librarianship, and, a key role in writing and collaboratively implementing a $333,574 three-year Digitizing Special Hidden Collections from a Council on Library and Information Resources grant with Pomona College and five Southern California libraries (public and academic) and the National Archives and Records Administration in Riverside, California. The “Digitizing Southern California Water Resources” project digitized materials from federal, state, and local governments, water companies, local agencies, engineers, and individuals involved in water development in the Southern California region from the 19th through the 20th centuries. The Clarke Historical Library, founded in 1954 by a gift from Dr. Norman E. Clarke, Sr., collects, preserves, and promotes nationally recognized collections, that include the history of Michigan and the Old Northwest Territory, the history of Central Michigan University, and selected topics including children's literature, campaign biographies of U.S. presidential candidates, the history of angling, and historic Michigan newspapers. The Clarke serves the needs of the CMU community, fosters scholarly activity through its collections and exhibits, and strengthens community partnerships through an active outreach program. WebJunction upcoming webinars
by White, Shannon (MDE) 13 Jan '22

13 Jan '22

WebJunction is kicking off the new year with a wide range of webinars already on the schedule! These webinars are open to everyone and all attendees receive a certificate of attendance. If you can’t attend a live session, all WebJunction webinars are recorded and available for free in the Course Catalog<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flearn.web…>, and certificates are also available through the Catalog. Promote Community Engagement and Challenge Prejudice with a Human Library Thursday, January 20, 2022 ◆ 3:00 pm Eastern ◆ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/human-library.html<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…> The idea of circulating ‘human books’ first emerged in 2000, in Copenhagen, Denmark, as a way to help grow community understanding of the diversity of the human experience, locally and on a global level. The Human Library® model seeks to create safe spaces for dialogue where topics are discussed openly between human books and their readers. Join us to gain insights from a public and academic library using this innovative and impactful model to create meaningful community dialogue. The Anne Arundel County Public Library’s Human Library provides an opportunity for people to connect one-on-one with those they might otherwise never have a chance to talk – people who may have life experiences, stories, or beliefs different from their own. At the DiMenna-Nyselius Library at Fairfield University ‘human books’ are students, faculty, staff, or community members who have volunteered to share their life experiences and answer questions that address stereotypes, prejudices, stigmas, or taboo topics. The session will include discussion on how these organizations were able to plan and implement a Human Library program, how the ‘books’ were prepared and how the program was offered successfully online. Library Signage: Effective Crisis Communications Thursday, January 27, 2022 ◆ 3:00 pm Eastern ◆ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/library-signage.html<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…> Good signage in the library helps to create clarity and build awareness, while bad signage can lead to frustration and confusion. Has your library had to implement COVID-related signage? Has there been a review of other temporary and permanent signage? This session will look at recommended types of library signs and address aspects of library signage within crisis communications. We will also address how to conduct a signage audit, the importance of library branding and using templates, and internal communications as they relate to signage. Online resources will be shared and there will be opportunities for Q&A and discussion. Growing Digital Equity Through Community Partnerships Thursday, February 3, 2022 ◆ 3:00 pm Eastern ◆ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/growing-digital-equity.html<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…> As digital access becomes increasingly essential for participating in community life, libraries can play an important role in the digital equity and inclusion ecosystem. Hear about a variety of innovative services and partnerships that King County Library System (KCLS) has instituted for sustainable digital inclusion. These include launching a Digital Navigators service, circulating hotspots and laptops to partners to reach people experiencing homelessness, participating in a community-owned wireless network, and supporting telehealth. Learn to apply these ideas to overcome digital access barriers and meet the digital needs of your own communities. “Let’s Talk Race” Toolkits Tuesday, February 22, 2022 ◆ 3:00 pm Eastern ◆ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/lets-talk-race-toolkits.html<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…> Talking openly about race with kids can dramatically improve their racial literacy—but adults often don't know where to start! Staff from the Salt Lake City Public Library (SLCPL) will share how they built picture book-based kits to give caregivers the tools to have these important conversations. The session will also include discussion on book selection, the SLCPL framework for understanding racial literacy, and some of the joys and challenges that were faced during development and implementation. You'll receive a list of favorite race education resources, and a step-by-step plan for developing kits on your own. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Shannon White Library Development Manager Library of Michigan, 702 W. Browsing Bins for Picture Books
by Cathy Chesher 12 Jan '22

12 Jan '22

Happy January Everyone, We are contemplating swapping out our traditional spine out shelves for browsing bins for our picture book collection. I am interested in experiences and feedback from other Michigan libraries that have browsing bins. Do you like them? Do your patrons like them? What are the pros and cons to browsing bins? Do you have exclusively browsing bins or a combination of bins and spine out? If you have experience switching from the traditional spine out to the browsing bins, how did that go? Anything you care to share about picture book browsing bins is appreciated. And if your library is reasonably close to Adrian, I may stop by to take a look! I have seen plenty of this type of shelving in libraries but not from the perspective of getting them for our library. Thank you. -- Cathy Chesher Youth Services Librarian 517-265-2265 cchesher(a)adrian.lib.mi.us

2022 Michigan Notable Books promotional material
by Oster, Adam (MDE) 12 Jan '22

12 Jan '22

Hi All, We are starting to populate the Library of Michigan's Michigan Notable Books (MNB) page with downloadable graphics/resources that libraries can use for promoting the 2022 Michigan Notable Books list. You can find this content by either going to www.Michigan.gov/NotableBooks<http://www.Michigan.gov/NotableBooks> and going to the "Information for Libraries" section, or by going directly to https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,9327,7-381-88854_90002-520507-…. There you will find graphics that you can use on your library's social media accounts as well as PDFs of signage you can print off to display at your library. We will continue to add more content to this page over the next few weeks. Thank you to everyone who shared the announcement post<https://www.facebook.com/libraryofmichigan/posts/10158264133431771> of the 2022 MNB list. I think we set a new record for a Library of Michigan Facebook post (its currently at 38,361 People Reached, 119 Likes and 193 Shares) and much of that is due to the help of Michigan Libraries. Starting next week, we will be featuring posts on each individual 2022 MNB title on the Library of Michigan's social media accounts. We encourage everyone to share them on your library's social media pages. If you have already purchased any of the 2022 MNB titles, be sure to include a link to your catalog record of the individual title so that your patrons can find it on your library's catalog. Its also a good opportunity to highlight a title if its available in your eBook collections. Here are the Library of Michigan social media pages: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/libraryofmichigan/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/LibraryofMich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/libraryofmichigan/ I know a few libraries have inquired about the Author Tour application. We are still finalizing the list of what 2022 MNB Authors are available to participate in the tour this year (a few of them currently live outside of Michigan). Once that is solidified, I will put a link to the application on the Michigan Notable Books page as well as send the link out on Michlib. Thanks! Summer Reading tracking programs
by Laura Hauch - Buchanan District Library 12 Jan '22

12 Jan '22

Last week I got an email from Demco that they're discontinuing Wandoo Reader. Needless to say we're panicking a little. Maybe Demco thinks 5 months is enough time to find a replacement, but I beg to differ. What program do you use to track your Summer Reading? Does it have an app, or strictly web-based? How easy was it for your patrons to learn? Your staff? How expensive? Any word on whether the Library of Michigan will provide access to another program?
