Shifting Landscapes tonight: Critical Race Theory
by Thomas Trahey 17 Jan '22

17 Jan '22

Mason County District Library and Abondia Center turn to education in the public lecture series Shifting Landscapes on Monday January 17, with *Critical Race Theory* at 7-8:30 pm on Zoom <http://mcdl.pub/sl-zoom> at mcdl.pub/sl-zoom, featuring Jamila Jefferson-Jones, Professor of Law, Wayne State University. Jefferson-Jones is a professor of law and also the associate director of Property, Equity and Justice for the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. She teaches courses in Property, Real Estate Transactions, Fair Housing, and Entrepreneurial Urban Development. Jamila Jefferson-Jones writes about property and wealth attainment by communities and groups on the margins of society. Her work harnesses critical race methodologies, focusing in part on the use or threat of police action against members of disfavored groups. Her recent article on this subject, #LivingWhileBlack: Blackness As Nuisance <https://digitalcommons.wcl.american.edu/aulr/vol69/iss3/3/>, was published in the *American University Law Review* and featured in the *New York Times* . Professor Jones will lead the group in discussion of Critical Race Theory. What is it? Who teaches it? Where is it taught? How is it used in modern educational settings? In asking questions about the nature and purpose of education, the Shifting Landscapes’ series seeks to address questions on people’s minds. It also hopes the information helps people get more from news sources, as well as professionals and others about education and news that matters to them. Shifting Landscapes series will focus on education in January, including Critical Race Theory (Jan 17), and Teaching Difficult Truths to Children and Youth (Jan 24). Additional topics include Race/Racism (Feb 7, 14, 21), Truth in Politics (Mar 7, 14, 21), and Economics (Apr 4, 11, 18). Events are free, live or by Zoom. Tickets are not necessary but registration is helpful. To register: mcdl.pub/sl-register. For information visit mcdl.pub/SL. The previous lecture by Professor Robert Cook on the 1619 Project is available for viewing at mcdl.pub/1619. -- Thomas Trahey Mason County District Library Head of Circulation 231-843-8465

First Amendment Audit
by Perri Saunders 15 Jan '22

15 Jan '22

Just had our first First Amendment Audit. It went very well, actually. I spotted them before they came in so we could gather ourselves for a minute - make sure no patron names were on screens, and the reserve shelf had no names showing, etc. Two people (man and woman) came in with cameras. I welcomed them from the circ desk as I would anyone else (maybe a *little* more enthusiastically). The man asked if we had the U.S. Constitution for Dummies and we talked about that a little. I offered to show them around, but they just wanted to walk around and film. We only had one patron in here at the time, so when the man started that way, I just told him that he was welcome to film anywhere in the public areas as long as he didn't interfere with other patrons' enjoyment of the library. We were respectful and, in turn, they were respectful, so it went just fine. They were here for about 15 minutes. I won't lie - it felt like longer. I know that this man, FRICN MEDIA, has lots of 1st Amendment Audit videos on YouTube, many of which turned confrontational. We were welcoming, forthcoming, and really boring. Score! Like Kate Andrade said, "It's not if, it's when". We might as well be prepared. Have a great day! Perri -- Perri Saunders, Director White Pigeon Township Library 102 N. Kalamazoo St., P.O. Hi, Michlib community, We are getting ready to open our renovated library with a new RFID system and have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do a full inventory on our newly-converted collection. HOWEVER, Bibliotheca cannot supply us with an RFID inventory wand (that they call a mobile DLA, I think) because their manufacturer has dropped the ball. Bibliotheca has said that if we could borrow a wand, we could reprogram it for our collection, then reprogram it back when we return it to the lending institution. Any help out there?
