Executive Director - Wilton Library (CT) The Wilton Library seeks an Executive Director to help continue and enhance the Library's mission to inform, connect and inspire the community. The Wilton Library<http://www.wiltonlibrary.org/>, a non-profit Association Library located in the center of the town of Wilton, CT, serves a community of 18,000+ residents. In addition to providing traditional library services, the Wilton Library also offers outstanding adult and children's programming, vital teen services, and public fine arts and performing arts spaces. The Library collaborates with local government and businesses and is the "go-to" place for local history knowledge, meeting room spaces, and digital connections. Consisting of a single facility, the Library is poised to move forward building on its successes, like the recent acquisition of the Brubeck Collection<https://www.wiltonlibrary.org/sites/default/files/WLA_Brubeck_Collectionweb…> and celebrating 125 years of service in 2020. The new Executive Director will work with a committed staff (27 FTE, 20 FT, and 20+ PT), an energetic core of volunteers, an established donor group, a dedicated community, and a $3.6 million budget to deliver quality services. Key initiatives include increasing the library's donor base through long-term strategies, identifying the needs of new and younger community members and area businesses, helping the library continue to emerge from the pandemic, and maintaining the high level of excellent customer service the community has come to expect. Wilton<http://www.wiltonct.org/> is nestled in the Norwalk River Valley in western Connecticut. Located in Fairfield County, Wilton is north of the City of Norwalk, west of the Town of Weston, and east of the Town of New Canaan. Wilton's residents live in an area of 26.8 sq. miles. Wilton is 55 miles from midtown Manhattan and is within easy driving distance from Westchester County, New York. The Town is accessible from routes 7, 33, 106, and 107. Wilton is only one hour from Grand Central Station on the New Haven Line Danbury branch of Metro-North Railroad<http://mta.info/mnr/>, which runs a daily commuter service. Responsibilities: The Executive Director reports to a 24-member Library Board of Trustees and works with the Board, staff, and major stakeholders to establish the strategic vision for the Library aligning the Library's mission, goals, and objectives with the community's needs and priorities. The Executive Director's primary responsibilities are to maintain an outstanding library that anticipates and fulfills the needs of its community utilizing all resources available. The Executive Director is responsible for every phase of library operations including programs, collections and services, personnel, technology, public relations and outreach, marketing, buildings, grounds, equipment, budget, donor relations, and fundraising. Qualifications: A Master of Library Science degree from an accredited university and progressively responsible experience in library administration and staff supervision, including five (5) years of supervision of a public library department or as a director or assistant director of a public library. A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to successfully meet the requirements of the position may be considered. Essential attributes and skills include vision, creativity, energy, and enthusiasm; superior written and oral communications skills; demonstrated success in effectively promoting library services to the community; political acumen; collaborative and consensus-building skills; experience in recruiting, mentoring, evaluating, and retaining an excellent staff; and a thorough knowledge of current trends and "best practices" for library service. Proven success working effectively with a policy-making board is desirable. On Thursday, November 4, at 7:00 pm EDT, the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University will host the final presentation of the Clarke's Virtual Fall Speakers Series. Rita Williams-Garcia has enlightened audiences, from middle-grade readers to adults, with her award-winning novels, including One Crazy Summer, P.S. Be Eleven, A Sitting in St. James (her most recent book), and more. Learn about her life and work as well as the stories behind her novels during this special event, made possible by the David M. and Eunice Sutherland Burgess Endowment. The Southeast Regional Library (Wake County Public Libraries, Raleigh, NC) only started offering limited in-person programming in June, so the staff had a bit more time leading up to summer than normal. Melissa Schultz, Youth Services Librarian, was inspired by Salina Yoon's whale artwork for Tails & Tales and started dreaming about a giant whale hanging in the children's area. After getting the green light on this project, she reached out to more staff, and together, a team of us designed, sculpted, painted, and decorated a 7-foot-long whale that we named Coralina! [https://mcusercontent.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/images/8b715af5-f4d0-02…] They used foam core and chicken wire to make the frame, then did traditional newspaper papier-mache for the first layer. They next made a clay mixture that provided great texture after it dried. Then, they painted her with acrylic paint and ink, used Sculpty clay to make the barnacles, and sprayed the entire whale with Spray Lacquer to give her a fresh-from-the-ocean-like sheen. Luckily, they had most of the materials already on hand-chicken wire from a previous project, glue, paint, newspaper, foam core, and flour. In total, they only spent about $25 on the project. It took about five weeks to complete, with five people working on the project for 1-4 hours each week. Feeding Children & Teens After School at the Library By Janet Ingraham Dwyer, Chair, CSLP Child & Community Well-Being Committee & Library Consultant, State Library of Ohio Want to make a difference for your children and teens? Consider feeding them after school! Many public libraries do - typically through the USDA's Child and Adult Care Food Program<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fns.u…> (CACFP). Libraries that offer afterschool enrichment activities can participate in the At-Risk Afterschool Meals component of CACFP and provide a daily nutritious meal or snack to 0-18 year olds. The pandemic has brought a sharp increase in economic instability and food insecurity. Many families do not know how to access free meals for children, and if they don't participate in a formal afterschool program, their options are limited. Libraries and CACFP are a great fit! Libraries offer equitable treatment, dignity, respect for young people, and accessibility. Your library is a trusted community center which always welcomes children and teens and is famous for giving stuff out for free. CACFP is also good for the library. Besides addressing hunger and supporting vulnerable youth - and mitigating behavior issues that can be exacerbated when a child hasn't eaten in hours - participation offers: * Access to new user groups, especially underserved and marginalized populations; * Increased visibility of the library as a community asset; * Opportunities for new partnerships; * Positioning of the library as an important stakeholder in community well-being and positive child outcomes; * Support for afterschool programming through increased attendance. Libraries do not have to purchase or prepare the food. Library staff typically receive temperature-controlled or shelf-stable meals/snacks dropped off at the library, coordinate and manage distribution or sit-down mealtimes, and handle cleanup. This is an ideal time to participate. Like the Summer Food Service Program, CACFP is a state-administered program paid for by federal funds. These programs exist to support children and teens in low-income areas. Ordinarily, an area eligibility requirement limits participation to areas where at least 50% of children are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals. But for the 2021-22 school year, this area eligibility requirement has been waived by the USDA<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fns.u…> to address economic impacts of the pandemic. Depending on your state administering agency's application of this waiver, your library may be eligible to participate this year even if you aren't in an area defined as low-income. Note that you will likely not be eligible in 2022-23 if your area has under a 50% free/reduced school meals rate. But you could maintain an afterschool snack program independently of CACFP, in partnership with a foodbank or other community provider, or through donations, or by including the cost of snacks in the library budget. Whether your library has been on the social work train for a while, or is just hopping on, there has been a relationship forming between libraries and social work. Social workers are a tool for the patrons, but also the staff. Social workers can help the staff in the form of offering training, and/or identifying areas in need of improvement. Social workers can act as liaisons between the library institution and local non-profit organizations. Some libraries are choosing to use social workers to spearhead their diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. No matter what your institution chooses to use a social worker for, social workers have proven to be useful additions to the library industry. If your library does not have a social worker, consider recommending the addition of a social work position to your director or board of control. If your library does have a social worker, get to know them and ask them more about their position! Resources Library Staff Skills - Niche Academy<https://my.nicheacademy.com/staffskills> - do not forget there are many intriguing self-paced courses available to MI library staff, provided with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Today I'd like to feature: Storytime 101<https://my.nicheacademy.com/staffskills/course/22517> (newly added to MI's course options)! Over the past few years, there has been a sizable turnover in youth services staffing. Seasoned storytellers are retiring, being promoted, or moving on to use their skills in new ways. Libraries are hiring a wonderful new group of staff to continue the tradition of offering high-quality storytimes in their communities. This tutorial is meant to support those who are new to storytime. It covers basic skills, like preparing for storytime, reading books out loud, using props and music, and engaging adults and children. Each section has an interactive module filled with useful information, examples, and videos. There are also links to documents and online resources that will support your storytime practice. It should take you around five hours to complete the entire tutorial. Some sections are longer than others and some are shorter. Some of the information you may just want to skim over for now and go back to it when you need it. After you have completed the training, please fill out the evaluation at the end for ICL's records. Storytime is a magical event. Each program is a big deal in the life of a young child. During this tutorial, you will learn how to make your storytimes meaningful and impactful for your audience. This course was developed by Idaho Commission for Libraries with support provided by Institute of Museum and Library Services, and open to Michigan Library Staff. The Coretta Scott King Book Awards Donation Grant The Coretta Scott King Book Awards Donation Grant was created to help build collections and bring books into the lives of children in preschool programs, faith-based reading projects, homeless shelters, charter schools, underfunded libraries, and other community organizations. The Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee believes children's lives must be saturated with books and reading opportunities. An enduring message of the Committee's Public Awareness Campaign is that books and reading can only add value to children's lives if books are present with opportunities to read. Research shows that beliefs about intelligence and ability impact one's performance and response to failure. Go hiking in Charlevoix with some help from your library

Charlevoix Recreation hosts spooky trail hike Annie Doyle The Petoskey News-Review https://www.petoskeynews.com/story/news/2021/10/28/charlevoix-recreation-ho… While the trail is meant to be spooky, the city's recreation director says the emphasis is more on fun than fright. The City of Charlevoix Recreation Department is hosting a family-friendly Not-So-Spooky Halloween Candlelight Hike from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30. Highlights of this evening include the Boy Scouts heading up the bonfire, where there will be the fixings for s’mores. The Charlevoix High School National Honor Society, Charlevoix Area Chamber of Commerce, Visit Charlevoix, American House, Chris and Sarah Mayte, and Charlevoix Recreation are all decorating a portion of the trail for the hiker’s enjoyment. *The Charlevoix Public Library also plans to have a presence with an activity at the hike.* Hikers should plan on parking at the Mt. McSauba Lodge as the trailhead will begin and end in that location. Those with younger children may want to start the hike earlier as the trails will get progressively darker, even though the trails will be lit with luminaries.
