Hello, I am reaching out to see if your library has a bid specification or scope of work that you have used for painting an exterior portion of a historic building. We are looking at having an exterior portion of our historical home, and because the building is over 100 years old, I want to make sure we are addressing the appropriate preparation, materials, and painting requirements for an older structure. JOB TITLE: Youth Services Librarian REPORTS TO: Community Relations Manager CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt; Union position HOURS: Full-Time (40 hours per week) Salary: $25.25/hr. The Genesee District Library is seeking a full-time, energetic, team-oriented, tech savvy Youth Services Librarian with a strong commitment to public service. Ideal candidate is passionate about serving children, teens, families, and educators. Responsible for programming and community outreach from birth to teens, fostering partnerships and leading literacy efforts in Genesee County. The Genesee District Library is a Class VI system of 19 libraries in Genesee County, and the third largest library system in Michigan. Help us inspire our youth to become lifelong learners. Responsibilities include: Evaluates program needs and assists in carrying out services district-wide for children and young adults. Participates in the scheduling and training of outside story time providers. Provides youth services information via various digital platforms. Partners with area schools and other agencies to promote collections and services offered to children and young adults. Builds strong community bonds by working with community leaders. Contributes to social media with well written, grammatically correct posts. Stays current in new library services and trends in youth services through reading, seminars, workshops, webinars, and conferences. Routinely seeks out and identifies sources for grant funding opportunities. Prepares well written and documented grant proposals specific to children and youth services. Attends outreach events in schools and community. Requirements for the position include: Master’s degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited library school. A minimum of a Level 2 certification by the Library of Michigan within ninety (90) days of hire. One year of professional experience in a library. Must enjoy working with children while creating a high-quality experience for the children, parents, or guardians. Strong proficiency with electronic databases, Microsoft Office applications, social networking sites and mobile technology. Ability to get along with diverse personalities and populations. Ability to work as a team or independently within a fast-paced environment. Will be required to: Work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours, around programs, events and community outreach. Work Environment: The location of the work site is primarily the GDL Headquarters location. Significant travel throughout the district to attend or conduct library programs and other literacy events. The location will vary between branches of the Genesee District Library System, and the schedule will vary according to the needs of the public and the GDL System. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and vehicle for use on company business. Successful completion of a background check. Hello, I’m in the process of starting a Mahjong program at my library, and thankfully, I found a volunteer through the Friends group who has experience playing the Chinese version of Mahjong. She mentioned that Chinese Mahjong is generally much less complicated than American Mahjong. Here’s a simple overview of the differences: Chinese Mahjong ● Generally simpler to learn ● No annual Mah Jongg card ● No jokers ● No Charleston ● Players build their hands using traditional tile combinations ● Requires 4 players American Mahjong ● More complicated rules and scoring ● Uses an annual Mah Jongg card with specific winning hands ● Uses jokers ● Includes the Charleston, where players exchange tiles at the beginning ● Requires 4 players Since we won’t be starting until the fall, I’m not exactly sure what the program will look like yet, so we’re open to trying different things and seeing what works best for the group. For now, I’m planning to have 8 people register for the introductory Mahjong class. One volunteer will teach and play with a group of 4, while another volunteer will do the same with the other group of 4. She did mention that a game can take quite a while, so we’ll see how things go once we get started. We’ll also need a small square table for each group which I may have to purchase later. I already purchased an inexpensive Mahjong set from Amazon, and I’ll also be borrowing a set from the volunteer. I may purchase additional sets once I become more familiar with the game and have a better idea of what the program will need. The tiles can also be fairly noisy, so I’m planning to have the groups play in a room with carpeting to help reduce the noise. My volunteer also invited me to watch her play so I can get a better feel for how the game works before we begin. The plan is to offer the program once a month so participants can gradually become familiar and comfortable with the game. Eventually, the hope is that participants will be able to form their own groups and play independently. For now, I think it’s best to start small, see how it goes, and adjust the program as we learn what works best for everyone. I hope this helps! Hello Library Land, I am working on putting a "Passport to Reading" program together for our winter season, and was curious if other libraries had ever done something like this. We will have lists of books/authors from other countries for patrons in different age groups to read, then once they finish their lists, they will get entered to win an "Around the World" gift basket with various items from around the world. Has anyone else done a program similar to this? If so, do you have reading lists and possibly prize ideas that you could pass along to me to make the amount of work on this program a bit less time consuming? Inspire. Connect. Empower. The Allen County Public Library is seeking a passionate, creative, and community-focused Senior Teen Librarian to lead engaging library services for teens in grades 7–12. In this role, you'll combine your expertise in librarianship with your understanding of adolescent development to connect teens with books, technology, information, and experiences that help them learn, grow, and discover their potential. You'll collaborate with schools, community organizations, families, and colleagues to ensure the library remains an essential resource for young adults throughout Allen County. What You'll Do As our Senior Teen Librarian, you will: * Deliver exceptional customer service to teens, their families, educators, and caregivers while creating an inclusive, welcoming environment. * Build meaningful relationships with teen patrons by applying current research and best practices in adolescent development. * Provide readers' advisory, reference, and research assistance tailored to the unique interests and needs of young adults. * Provide leadership within the department by serving as a role model for staff, demonstrating excellence in public service, supporting and mentoring colleagues, sharing expertise, and helping foster a positive, collaborative, and high-performing team environment. * Design, present, and evaluate innovative programs, classes, tours, book discussions, and special events for teens. * Teach research skills and information literacy to individuals and groups. * Represent the library through outreach visits to schools, juvenile correctional facilities, and other community organizations, serving as a trusted educational partner. * Promote library services by participating in school and community events. * Assist with developing and maintaining a dynamic teen collection by recommending new materials, identifying items for withdrawal, and monitoring collection needs. * Create engaging displays, resource guides, and promotional materials that encourage discovery and circulation. * Help patrons confidently use library technology, including computers, mobile devices, software, databases, wireless printing, and other digital resources. * Stay current with emerging trends in teen librarianship through professional development, conferences, professional organizations, and continuing education. * Foster a collaborative, respectful workplace that reflects the Library's commitment to exceptional public service. What You'll Bring Required Qualifications * Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution. * Must possess, or be eligible to obtain, a State of Indiana Public Librarian Certification upon hire * At least one (1) year of professional library experience. * Two (2) years of experience planning and delivering teen programming or educational programming for adolescents; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge of: * Principles and practices of professional librarianship. * Reference services, readers' advisory, and information literacy instruction. * Collection development and evaluation practices. * Current literature, authors, publishing trends, and resources for teens. * Current research, service models, library trends, and best practices in teen services and adolescent librarianship. * Adolescent development and strategies for creating engaging, developmentally appropriate learning experiences. * Educational technology, online databases, digital resources, and emerging technologies. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills. * Strong organization, planning, and project management abilities. * The ability to build positive relationships with teens, families, educators, community partners, and colleagues. * The ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a collaborative team.
