MeL Minute: Read Michigan: A New eResource in MeL.org

[cid:image004.png@01DBEBF5.2077D240]In April, we featured some eResources in the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL) that have significant content about Michigan. Since then, an exciting new eResource, ReadMichigan<https://readmichigan.biblioboard.com/home>, has been added to the MeL offerings. Developed by the Library of Michigan, this eResource has both fiction and non-fiction titles that include Michigan field guides, local histories of towns and cities across the state, and dozens of publications from Michigan State University Press and the University of Michigan Press. Michigan Field Guide and Activity Collection There are 15 curated collections available in ReadMichigan; however, the one that stands out at this time of year is certainly the Michigan Field Guide and Activity Collection. Titles that you’ll want to investigate right away: * Best Tent Camping: Michigan by Matt Forster * Butterflies of the Midwest Field Guide by Jaret C. Daniels * Michigan Day Trips by Theme by Kathryn Houghton & Mike Link * Petoskey Stone: Finding, Identifying, and Collecting Michigan’s Most Storied Fossil by Dan R. Lynch * Wildflowers of Michigan Field Guide by Stan Tekiela Michigan Notable Book Winners – Nature Another collection to peek at this summer is the Michigan Notable Book Winners – Nature. All of these have been published right here in Michigan and highlight some of the species that have a substantial impact on our region: * The Amphibians and Reptiles of Michigan: A Quaternary and Recent Faunal Adventure by J. Alan Holman * The Great Lake Sturgeon by Nancy Auer * Kirtland’s Warbler: A Story of a Bird’s Fight Against Extinction and the People Who Save It by William Rapai Michigan Local Town Histories With nearly 300 titles, one of my favorite collections in ReadMichigan is the Michigan Local Town Histories. What stands out about this curation is that it truly covers every single region of our great state, as well as providing interesting stories about specific historic events and places. Western Michigan University Libraries seeks a Manager-User Services in a new full-time, salaried staff position in our User Services department, with a key focus on launching and leading a new student peer learning program. This new student-to-student reference and research consulting service will provide exemplary learning interactions for our campus and give the student employees working in the program deep experience with library resources and services. Daily work in this role will include student scheduling, supervision, training, and coordination of the main Waldo Library service point. This role reports to the User Services Librarian and works closely with three other department managers to lead library public services and daily operations, ensuring exceptional customer service and planning staff and student training. The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in coordinating department activities, implementing library policies, and supervising a team of staff and student employees. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape a new initiative that supports student academic success through peer-led learning. Major Duties: * Manages the library service center and operations. * Provides customer service and support to library users. Monitors service expectations at the services desk. * Leads and provides program oversight for one or more of the following areas within the User Services Department: loan fulfillment, stacks maintenance, patron records and billing, or staff and student onboarding and training. * Coordinates department activities and programs with the library. * Collaborates with library staff to implement library policies. Provides clarification and interpretation of library policies and procedures. * Offers technical assistant for patrons. * Monitors and reports the maintenance environment of the library. * Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises staff and student employees. Minimum Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience. * Three years' relevant experience. * Supervisory or lead experience. * Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. * Experience in a public or customer service role in a library. * Strong computer and technical skills. * Demonstrated ability to respond to emergencies and ensure a safe library environment. * Working knowledge of library search terminology, library databases, and an integrated library system. * Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including evenings and weekends. Desired Qualifications: * Familiarity with peer learning programs in libraries. cantilever periodical shelving label holders

Hi everyone, We're looking to get more label holders for our cantilever periodical shelves (this style https://www.thelibrarystore.com/product/cn92-3040/estey ). The shelves have a roughly 1.25" ledge/lip on the front, and we have clear plastic clip-on label holders that can attach to them. See the attached photos. They clip to the ledge at both the top and bottom, so that when you lift the front to access back issue magazines, the label doesn't fall off. We're looking for the same thing or similar to replace broken ones, but aren't having much luck. Anyone know what they're called, or have a part number or source for them, or better yet have any you want to part with? Looking at Demco and The Library Store, all clip on shelf label holders seem to be for inch-wide shelves and not this style. I don't think Demco's flat label holder for section markers will work. I have a few of a different brand and they're too big. If you have the same periodical shelves and don't use these holders, how do you label your shelves? We may have to go the magnet or adhesive route, but we really do like our current clips. Connie Wu from the Brennan Center for Justice will discuss direct democracy and its role within the better-understood political landscape of representative democracy. In Michigan direct democracy has been used by citizens in the form of petition initiatives to create the redistricting commission and give Michiganders increased voting rights and voting access, for example. But at the federal level and in other states, direct democracy is not necessarily a given, and some rights to direct democracy have come under fire. We will be offering the program in person at the Knapp Branch as well as on Zoom. While Zoom is probably more convenient for most, you are welcome to join us in person.
