CLOSING SOON: Stephen T. Riedner Grant for Life Enhancing Library Programs for People living with Dementia

There is still time to apply for the fourth round Stephen T. Riedner Grant for Life Enhancing Library Programs for People living with Dementia (see link below for more information on how to apply and list of past grantees). This grant provides libraries with start-up funds to create new services and programming for individuals experiencing Alzheimer's/Dementia. The deadline for applications is February 21, 2025, and there are two $2,500 grants available for libraries that wish to provide services for this community. Genrefying Teen Collections

Hello, I’m the Teen Librarian at the Wayne Public Library and interested in reorganizing our teen collection by genre. Currently, books have various genre labels but are under the overarching fiction collection and not separated out. Graphic novels and non-fiction books are the only other separate collections within the teen collection itself. In this role, you'll design and deliver engaging programs, crafts, and activities that spark creativity, critical thinking, and a love of reading. You'll provide reader's advisory, reference services, and innovative library experiences tailored to young adults. Building meaningful connections with teens is at the heart of this position, as you'll foster a welcoming space where they feel supported and inspired. If you're confident, energetic, and ready to make a lasting impact on the lives of young people, we'd love to hear from you! Functions Specific to a Senior Teens Librarian * Provides positive customer service to all patrons with an emphasis on grades 7 through 12 and their families, educators, and other supporting persons as needed. * Uses knowledge of current research and theories of adolescent development to foster connections with teen patrons. * Plans, prepares, presents and evaluates teen programs, tours, and other activities. Provides research instruction to groups as needed. * Provides on-site visits, programs, and/or instruction in schools, juvenile correctional facilities, and other congregate settings. Represents the library at community and school events. * Assists patrons with finding materials and resources by providing bibliographic instructions; guidance on library catalog use, online and database resources; readers' advisory and reference * Assists with collections activities. Recommends materials for removal. Recommends materials for collection enhancement. Notes shortages/overages in materials. Creates displays and guides to increase usage and awareness of library resources. * Assist patrons with use of library computers, mobile devices, wireless connections, wireless printing, specialized equipment, software, and applications. * Promotes and supports the overall mission of the library by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff. Acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment. * Maintains awareness of current library trends and developments, especially as relates to youth services, through professional reading, conference attendance, participation in professional organizations, and other means of professional development. * Serves as person in charge when required. Seeking Benchmark Data on Library Material Losses

Greetings, Like many other libraries, we strive to balance increasing access with protecting our community's investment in our collection. Today, I had a conversation with our circulation manager about the expected amount of lost or stolen materials as a routine part of library operations. I was hoping to find an established benchmark (e.g., libraries typically lose *X%* of their collection value annually), but so far, I haven’t come across anything definitive. Has anyone else looked into this or found useful data on this topic? Having a benchmark would help us assess whether our current loss levels are within a reasonable range or if they indicate a need to adjust our policies or security measures. Any insights or resources you can share would be greatly appreciated. Cheers! Scott W. Adult Advisory Board

Hello, I'm looking for feedback from any libraries that have an Adult Advisory Board, similar to a Teen Advisory Board, consisting of volunteers that recommend programming, materials, etc. Do you specify an age range for the group? Do you have active volunteers and how often do you meet? Also what kind of activities do you do with them? Any feedback would be appreciated. Usage of small appliances in childrens library programs

Hello! If you run programs for children or teens that use small appliances such as sewing machines, irons, or any other thing that could potentially cause injury, do you have any age restrictions at your programs? For example, 13 years and older can use the appliance independently, whereas anyone younger needs adult supervision? Furthermore, do you require adults to sign a liability waiver for their child under 18 to use any of these small appliances?
