Adult Literacy Tutors

[Sharing this for a colleague...] Detroit Public Library Literacy Program Needs Volunteer Tutors! The Detroit Public Library is planning a relaunch of our adult (18+) literacy program at the Main Library, and we need volunteer tutors to make this happen! We are hoping that you, your colleagues, or patrons might be interested in participating. We are looking for tutors who: * Are reliable, patient, compassionate, positive, engaging and can make sure the learner is making progress toward a main reading goal using DPL curriculum and learner-supplied items (e.g. workbooks, assessments, work plans, etc.) * Can participate and complete a tutor training with DPL staff (~60-90 minutes), which be conducted online or in-person * Commit to 2 hours a week for in-person sessions during opening hours at DPL Main (plus any preparation time before sessions) The program will run from January through the end of October each year. I just had a patron call and ask if we had a subscription to ChatGPT or another AI service that the public could use. Is this something that any library offers? Is this even an option? The Events Manager supports HSM's mission by executing and managing operations and logistics for the Society's four annual history conferences. Position Summary Under the general direction of the CIO, this position has primary oversight of library collection management and works in collaboration with the reference and instruction librarian to provide library instruction and in-depth research support for faculty, students, staff, and other library users. The Collection and Reference Services Librarian participates in appropriate faculty and professional activities including serving on college and departmental committees. This is a full-time, twelve-month, benefits-eligible, administrative staff/non-teaching faculty appointment. Responsibilities * Manages and assesses monographic and serial collections in print and electronic formats * Supervises the ordering of all materials and manages the life cycle of licensed resources * Maintains vendor relations, negotiates pricing and licensing agreements, and coordinates cooperative collection development with other libraries, consortia and statewide initiatives * Catalogs and processes materials in multiple formats and maintains the integrity of the online catalog * Collaborates with the Digital Services Librarian to ensure catalog and electronic resources are available and bibliographic data are accurate * Determines policies and procedures for library acquisitions and collection management * Provides seasonal library instruction * Provides support for student and faculty research * Serve as evening and weekend supervisor as scheduled * Performs additional duties as assigned by the CIO Qualifications The successful candidate will have a ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree and will also demonstrate many of the following skills, abilities, and characteristics: * Demonstrated commitment to service; experience in acquisitions, cataloging, and collection development and familiarity with current trends; * Knowledge of trends and applications in electronic resource management; * Experience with print and electronic serials acquisitions and management; * Knowledge of review and evaluation resources for library materials in all formats; * Familiarity with current reference resources; * Knowledge of information literacy practices and principles; * Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, and organization skills; * Ability to work independently and in a team; * Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and apply skills quickly; * Evidence of flexibility, enthusiasm, and collegiality; * Adept at handling multiple responsibilities; * The ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff, and * Preferably, some familiarity with Alma Library Management System and an understanding of the academic objectives of a residential liberal arts college. Physical requirements of the position include ability to work in a library/office environment with extensive use of computer and telephone; ability to lift and carry up to ten pounds; ability to read and write and to handle and process both paper and electronic documents; ability to move between and within campus buildings. Celebrating Novi Public Library's 65th Anniversary

Hello Michigan Library Folks! In recognition and celebration of the Novi Public Library's upcoming 65th Anniversary, the Friends of Novi Public Library is hosting a friendraiser! You have the opportunity to enter a raffle and win this beautiful library/book themed quilt (70 x 80 inches), designed and crafted by quilter Harriet Bruce of Bay Port, Michigan. It includes t-shirts from many past library events, especially summer reading. It is made to look like a book shelf and includes special touches like a vase of flowers, glasses, book worms, an old fashion check-out card and many other details. The colors are wonderfully bright. The quilt is not specific to Novi, but to libraries in general and Michigan. It will be hung on the Library's wall at the Novi Library by the self checkout stations if you are near Novi and want to drop in to see it. The raffle will run until Friday, October 31. Tickets are $10 each, cash or check *ONLY* and will be available at the Library's Circulation Desk. Be sure to fill out your name and phone number clearly. Put the small part of the ticket with your name and phone into the plastic box and keep the larger part. *OR* anyone outside of Novi, can contact Sue Johnson, President of NPL Friends at 248-444-8782 (suejohnson(a)mi.rr.com) to buy directly. We will have NPL staff at the MLA Conference in two weeks to get you your ticket stubs if you choose to buy a raffle ticket and support our Friends.
