Chief Operating Officer – Allen County Public Library (IN) The Allen County Public Library (IN) seeks a strategic operational leader to serve as its next Chief Operating Officer (COO). This executive-level position plays a critical role in translating vision into execution, ensuring ACPL’s systems, services, and internal operations are aligned to support the library’s mission. This is a visible, high-impact role for an operational leader who values transparency, consistency, and collaboration as much as innovation, and will play a central role in ACPL’s ongoing transformation as a responsive, community-focused library system. Reporting to the Executive Director, the COO is responsible for comprehensive oversight of Public Services, Information Technology, Youth Services, and System Services. The ideal candidate will bring depth in public library administration, systems-level thinking, and a leadership style grounded in both collaboration and accountability. The Allen County Public Library (ACPL) has fostered lifelong learning and discovery in northeast Indiana for more than 135 years. The ACPL consists of a Main Library, thirteen branches, and a data center, with an enthusiastic staff of 324 FTE serving approximately 1.7 million visitors per year. With a $37 million budget, ACPL supports service to its 385,000 constituents, 51% of whom are cardholders. The ACPL’s collection includes more than 3.9 million items, with a circulation total of 4.6 million items borrowed annually. The Main Library is home to the The Genealogy Center, the nation’s largest public genealogy research center, and The Rolland Center for Lincoln Research, consisting of more than 30,000 artifacts related to President Abraham Lincoln.  Since 2021, ACPL has undertaken an extensive and collaborative planning process that included evaluations of their current facilities, multiple focus groups, community surveys, and public hearings. The result is a Facilities Master Plan that reflects the varied needs and aspirations of Allen County residents. Thanks to the support of many key partners, ACPL reached a major milestone within the last year when the Fort Wayne City Council, the Allen County Council, and the ACPL Board of Trustees approved the issuance of $37 million in bond funding to be combined with more than $20 million of library reserve funds to fund Phase 1 of the Facility Master Plan. Phase 1 prioritizes projects at locations where buildings are no longer sustainable due to age, size, or critical structural issues. Key Responsibilities include: * Serving as second-in-command to the Executive Director, with delegated leadership responsibility across departments and initiatives. * Driving operational planning aligned to ACPL’s strategic, facilities, and technology goals. * Supervising and supporting a high-performing leadership team; ensuring effective oversight of budget, performance metrics, and day-to-day service delivery. * Leading ongoing evaluation and improvement of services, staffing, projects, and resource allocation. * Coordinating capital and facilities planning efforts, including alignment with ACPL’s Facility Master Plan. * Representing the Library in system-wide discussions, cross-departmental initiatives, and external partnerships. * Ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations; maintaining standards aligned with professional best practices. * Acting as lead in the Executive Director’s absence. Qualifications: A master’s degree in library or information sciences from an ALA-accredited institution is required, as is a minimum of five (5) years of public library managerial experience that includes supervisory responsibilities for mid-to-upper-level managers. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Other requirements include the ability to obtain State Library Certification at an LC2 level within one (1) year, and a valid driver’s license. Demonstrated success managing multiple departments in complex organizations, and experience leading strategic planning, resource planning, and staff development are highly desired skills. Familiarity with capital planning, technology integration, and construction or renovation projects is strongly preferred. Libraries sharing space with Municipalities

Good afternoon, My library is in the process of negotiating with the local municipality to increase the size of our footprint in the village. Our library is currently 1,500sqft with on street parking only. We would like to increase our library to 6,000-7,000sqft with an attached parking lot. In our talks someone suggested allowing the village clerk to have an office in the new space with their own entrance and facilities as they are currently located in the Department of Public Works garage as a way to sweeten the deal for the village. We are a district library but on village owned property where the library has been for the last 60 years. Our current lease is $1 per year for symbolic purposes only. We maintain the building and pay for all of our utilities. The village cuts the grass, removes snow, and salts the sidewalks. Is there anyone who is an independent library system but shares space with another entity? I know city libraries and municipal libraries that share but not district libraries and would love to hear their pros and cons if there are any out there. Thanks, Matt Lubbers-Moore FDL Director

Survey on AI Generated Materials in Library Collections

Hello! As a cataloger, I've seen increasing requests over the past 18+ months for original cataloging of materials that utilize some amount of AI in an item's creation. In the conversations I've had so far with library people, many folks were unaware that materials they purchased utilized AI in its creation, and AI's use is frequently not disclosed on these items. This increase has been particularly significant in certain categories of materials such as children's books and recipe books. Since ALA guidance on AI and libraries is forth coming (the working group was just formed in June 2025) <https://americanlibrariesmagazine.org/2025/09/02/books-by-bots/>, I'm curious what Michigan libraries are experiencing as they add materials to their collections in the age of AI. This in mind, I've been trying to come up with some best practices and guidelines while we wait for guidance from national groups like ALA. PCC does have this existing document <https://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/scs/documents/FAQ-Cataloging-of-Resources-Gener…>, but it does not cover materials that you *suspect *utilize AI but its use is not explicitly disclosed in the work. *I've created a short survey asking a few questions about the topic. <https://wplc.fillout.com/ai-materials-2025> *I'd like to encourage not only library directors, *but interested staff working in acquisitions/collection development/cataloging *to fill out the survey with their experience. Hello, all! Willard Library in Battle Creek, Michigan is hosting author and former cold case investigator Paul Holes for an evening discussion of his book “Unmasked: My Life Solving America’s Cold Cases” on Thursday, Oct. 30, 6 p.m. at the Kool Family Center (200 W. Michigan Ave.). This event is free to the public and we will have a bookstore on-site selling copies of his book. Prepared Q&A and book signing will follow the author talk. Holes is a retired investigator for Contra Costa County in the San Francisco Bay Area. He specialized in cold case and serial predator crimes, and lent his expertise to multiple high-profile cases including Laci Peterson and Jaycee Dugard. Most famously, he was the Lead Cold Case Investigator for the Golden State Killer case, which he was instrumental in solving after 44 years. The Huron-Clinton Metroparks system offers fantastic educational events and programs for the public on a variety of topics. AI Program Expert

Hello All, Looking to do an AI info program targeted towards old adults & seniors. Anyone know of any groups or individual who can present on such a topic? I’ve tried local colleges, but have trouble getting professors interested at presenting at the library. Richland is just north of Kalamazoo on the SW side of the state. Would prefer doing an in-person program, rather than a Zoom.
