Right before the new year, I read about the 1000 Hours Outside Challenge<https://www.1000hoursoutside.com/>. The idea is to combat time spent on electronic devices with time spent enjoying nature. Reading this article made me consider how outdoor activities need to be both equitable and accessible for all to enjoy. Dearborn Heights City Libraries Librarian I – Permanent Part-time 20-25 hours/week General Summary: Under the general direction of the Library Director or designee, performs a variety of library tasks requiring a working knowledge of library procedures . Duties may include planning and conducting age appropriate library programs, assisting patrons with reference and reader’s advisory questions, and assisting with the selection and maintenance of the library collection. Essential Job Functions: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. 1. Assists patrons in locating materials and information, utilizing various technologies and a working knowledge of the library system, including library cooperative and Library of Michigan resources. 2. Provides reference and information service assistance to patrons using both print and electronic resources. 3. Performs technical support duties, including collection development and acquisition control under the supervision of the Library Director or designee. 4. Compiles data and completes a variety of reports using both manual and computerized spreadsheets and databases. Researches and makes recommendations to the Library Director or designee on ways to gather data, improve existing reports or initiate new reports. 5. Maintains assigned library web pages. 6. Plans and prepares library programs and displays. 7. May lead group tours through the library, explaining library services and procedures. 8. May be assigned supervisory responsibilities for work activities of other service area personnel during a special project, or for weekend shifts. 9. May be assigned to provide support in either branch of the Dearborn Heights City Library as the Library Director sees the need. 10. Other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the job. 1. Must possess a Master of Library Science or the equivalent from a school of library science or have a bachelors degree and be enrolled in a library science program accredited by the American Library Association (A.L.A.), 2. Must have a valid Michigan Drivers License and be able to demonstrate that there are no prohibitions that prevent the use of that license to drive between the two branches of the Dearborn Heights City Library. 3. Must qualify or be working on state certification from the Library of Michigan. 4. Knowledge of modern library service techniques, practices and principles. 5. Ability to serve library patrons efficiently and effectively. 6. Ability to operate computers, their operating systems and a wide variety of advanced operational and related software programs, including web creation software. 7. Must possess intermediate word processing, database and spreadsheet software skills. 8. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including patrons and colleagues. 9. Ability to communicate accurately, clearly and concisely in written, verbal and electronic formats. Physical Demands and Work Environment: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work in an environmentally controlled setting. Walking surfaces are well lit, tiled and/or carpeted. This is a position that places a low physical demand on an individual, requiring a limited range of motion. The use of both fine and gross muscles of the body is governed by the essential tasks, and may be supported by reasonable accommodations. Work is performed in the optimal working envelope of neck to navel and within arms reach. The use of a ladder, or steps, to reach shelving outside the work envelope is common. The employee is required to reach from approximately floor level to six feet. The side rotation of objects is approximately 24 inches (shelving of books). The employee is regularly required to lift objects of +/- 5 pounds, and occasionally lifts objects of 10 pounds. The employee must be able to manually write and work with a keyboard. The ability to use a phone system is essential to this position. Vision or assisted vision is required. Limited hearing is acceptable. Verbal communication is essential. Individuals with physical impairments can be accommodated to perform most of the essential tasks of this position. Being able to drive a vehicle is essential to move between the two library branches. The use of mobility assistant devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, etc., is not a hindrance to this position. The City of Dearborn Heights is an Equal Opportunity employer. Hello, My library has this idea for a program where individuals would register and pay a fee to compete in a eating contest. The fee would be split between helping cover the cost and as a cash prize for the winner of the contest. I am reaching out to all of you to see who may have done something similar at their library. Requirements * High school diploma or GED. * Basic clerical skills including computer and telephone skills. * Basic mathematical skills necessary for routine calculations. * Basic “customer service” skills acquired through volunteer or work experience. * Ability to work with general supervision and adhere to established policies and procedures. * Interpersonal and communication skills for interaction with staff and patrons in an effective and courteous manner. * The ability to retrieve library materials from shelves or storage areas and to answer telephone and patron inquiries. * Physical ability to push/pull fully loaded book carts, retrieve or place materials above shoulder or below knee level, and lift/carry materials and delivery bags weighing up to 50 pounds. * Manual dexterity, visual acuity and sufficient keyboarding/PC skills to effectively access information on the computer. Ability to operate a variety of equipment including computer, cash register, fax and copy machine. Preferred: * Some library experience. Compensation Minimum wage ($10.10).
