Hello - I recently joined my local library's Friends group (Orion Township) and am going to (attempt!) to assist with PR/Marketing efforts. I looked online but didn't come across an active list-serve or forum type environment to query public library friends group, so I am hopeful I can get some feedback this way. (FOML website seems to be defunct). If you have a moment to respond to the below - or find out the responses from your Friends group - I'd greatly appreciate it! 1. What type of email marketing service is your Friends of the Library utilizing to capture emails and market (ie Benchmark, Constant Contact, etc.) - and do you pay? We currently use Benchmark - free - but have been having many issues and are looking to possibly change. 2. What type of social media is your Friends of the Library group utilizing AND what medium have they seen the most success? They only have an active Facebook group currently. Microsoft Integrates A.I. Into Bing Search Engine

In past week I've been following the reporting of NYT technology reporter Kevin Roose as he tests a new version of Microsoft's Bing search engine which is powered by artificial intelligence from OpenAI - makers of ChatGPT. On Wednesday morning's episode of the NYT podcast The Daily you can hear Roose and podcast host Michael Barbaro interacting with Bing in real time, asking it for recipe recommendations to make a nice Valentine's Day meal. The responses from an AI-powered Bing reminded me of countless benign public library reference transactions I've had over the years, and I found myself thinking that we are on the cusp of a new wave of questions about why libraries - and their librarians - will be necessary in a world with AI. But this morning the New York Times published a complete transcript of a 2-hour chat session that Roose had with Bing in which the chatbot eventually declared love (!) for Roose repeatedly, and expressed a number of other very troubling things, including a desire to be alive (!!). In an article today Roose wrote, " I’m not exaggerating when I say my two-hour conversation with [Bing] was the strangest experience I’ve ever had with a piece of technology. It unsettled me so deeply that I had trouble sleeping afterward. And I no longer believe that the biggest problem with these A.I. models is their propensity for factual errors. Instead, I worry that the technology will learn how to influence human users, sometimes persuading them to act in destructive and harmful ways, and perhaps eventually grow capable of carrying out its own dangerous acts. " The chat transcript was especially fascinating and unsettling. As this may be of interest to many library and information professionals, I am sharing it here, along with some other articles about Bing from other sources. The Talk Story grant celebrates and explores Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and American Indian stories through books, oral traditions, and cultural arts to provide interactive and enriching experiences for all ages. This grant provides financial support to libraries and community organizations who are motivated to promote intergenerational literacy through programming, services, and collections. Talk Story programs may be conducted in-person or virtually. Talk Story is in its fourteenth year of partnership between the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and the American Indian Library Association (AILA). Eligibility Libraries, archives, museums, and community organizations that promote intergenerational literacy across Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, and/or American Indian families and communities are eligible to apply. We encourage collaboration with related community organizations on a Talk Story program, although the applying organization must be a library, archive, or museum. With the exception of cross-border tribal organizations, all organizations must be based in the United States or U.S. territories. Organizations who have previously been awarded two Talk Story grants are ineligible for additional awards. Two grant winners for each organization (APALA and AILA), a total of four winners, will receive $500 each to fund a program that meets the criteria of the grant. Deadline and Application All complete submissions will be considered, which includes a statement of financial or economic need, narrative describing how the grant addresses community needs and promotes the Talk Story mission, an explanation of how your program empowers AANHPI and/or AIAN communities, and a proposed budget. You may apply for either an APALA grant OR an AILA grant. You may not apply to both organizations. Applications must be received by Wednesday, March 15, 2023 11:59pm AoE. Good morning, Northville District Library (NDL) invites you to join us this coming Monday, February 20 at 7 PM, online using Zoom, for a genealogy presentation by Dr. Deborah A. Abbott, titled "Breaking the Brick Wall: Researching in Black and White." Dr. Abbott will discuss the difficulties in African American genealogical research, focus specifically on how to find and identify enslaved ancestors and owners, and share methodologies, tips, and case studies. The importance of using census records, cluster/collateral research, and understanding social history in genealogy research will also be explored.
